Gremlins

I still love this movie so much. I grew up on it and watched it all the time. And in my opinion, it's still a well made movie that holds up to time, even in the face of many of today's films. Even almost 30 years later, I still tear up at Gizmo saying "Bye bye, Billy."

So I also bought this yesterday and am watching it now. It's still a gorgeous, well-paced action flick. It's no masterpiece, but I still greatly enjoy it.

Anyone who even considers mentioning "Dances with Wolves" or "Ferngully" or any of that nonsense can just not bother. Just because the basic story structure is similar doesn't disqualify it as a good movie. It doesn't mean the movie isn't worth watching, owning, enjoying, or discussing. It also still has original, really fantastic sci-fi elements and absolutely gorgeous scenery, animation, and action.

I'm just so tired of hearing "Dances with Wolves in space" every time I even mention it. There are tons and tons of movies that have similar basic story structures. Why must this one be targeted above all the others? It's the same thing with assholes who bring up Battle Royale in relation to Hunger Games. Does Battle Royale have some kind of monopoly on the idea of having violent competitions? No, it doesn't. So shut up and enjoy both stories which are different enough from each other.

Gremlins 2: Decided to show this to my wife tonight. I have fun with it, though I prefer the first one's straight take, since this one is pretty much a parody of the first. My wife liked the sequel better though and was laughing throughout.

Honestly, I love both of them equally, but for entirely different reasons. I think the first one makes for a great cautionary tale about following the rules and makes for a great monster flick. It's dark and scary, but surprisingly low on body counts.

The second, on the other hand, plays up more of the comedy and in a lot ways takes a piss out of the first one and its rules. And I kinda like that about it. It's an entirely different kind of movie from the first in almost every way, even though it still has the same director. And to be honest, I like the improved designs on the gremlins in the second one. The brighter green makes them stand out a little better and it's clear the animatronics is vastly improved from the first, making them much more emotive.[DOUBLEPOST=1387765825,1387765790][/DOUBLEPOST]

Got Wall-E as a Christmas present from my Brother-in-law. @dill616 had not seen it before, so we watched it last night.

It's really good, as I'm pretty sure everyone knows. I really do like how they told a coherent and moving story with main characters who did not have much dialogue.

You guys sound like my dad . No really. He considers Gremlins 2 to be the only movie sequel as good as its original.

I remember when I was a kidand didn't realize Gremlins 2 had a "2" in the title. A cousin took me to a rental store and I said I wanted to get Gremlins, so that's what he rented. I was 6 years old and delighted to find out there was more than one Gremlins movie.

I mean its not awful, there were a few jokes I liked, the third act sucks you in, and you will feel a minute nostalgia high throughout. But on its own its really nothing special in terms of plot OR animation. If it were like a made for TV special I'd get it but for theaters? Nnnnnnnnnnnnnot so muuuuuuuuuuuuuch.

The kids were watching this English dub of Finish animated movie about reindeer called Little Brother: Big Trouble on netflix. The animation is good, and I suspect it was a feature film in Finland. But lord... was the subject matter awkward.
Early in the movie the main character gets dropped off by his dad Prancer (yes. Thee Prancer) to his mom's home just to find out that his mom has gotten married to another reindeer who has a kid of his own.

Considering I'm a step father myself... yeah... really awkward.

It doesn't have to be awkward. Kids are able to absorb and understand situations far better than most people give them credit for, it's why children's stories (especially Disney) often dealt in some pretty heavy stuff, like family death. So really, it's only awkward if you make it awkward, otherwise it's just a movie.

T-rex leans down and chomps the lawyer off the toilet, and this exchange occurs:

Muppet Christmas Carol: That was great. I've seen so many versions of the story that cut out many of the interesting details or minimalized the characters, and this kept a lot of the good stuff plus added in Muppet levity. The pacing felt perfect, bringing in humor at just the right moments, and same with the songs.

Also, Michael fucking Caine. Awesome.

Watched Raiders and Temple back to back.

I watch it every year and it's amazing. Incredibly faithful to the story---surprisingly so.

Fun fact: This was the first movie where Steve Whitmire replaced Jim Henson as Kermit--and he even had a dream about it. Look it up--it's cool.

Jack Reacher

Watched this with my folks a few nights ago while they're in town. Instead of going out for a movie, we decided to just see what was on Netflix and spotted this.

It was okay. Some good one-liners and pretty decent action, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see it. If you're in the mood for a decent mystery/thriller and don't mind Tom Cruise as an actor, give it a go.

Watched this over christmas with my family. It was... eh... it was OK. What the hell was up with Jodie Foster's terrible attempt at an accent? Nell's accent was less ridiculous for christ's sake.

@dill616 and I went to see the Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug today. Really good as expected.

Just a bit miffed that they ended it where they did rather than go ahead and complete the story. Smaug flying out and the movie ending right where it did. Very big Empire Strikes Back feel. No idea how they are going to stretch another movie out of the remaining battle. Though they do have Gandalf's showdown with the orcs and The Necromancer/Sauron to go as well.

BATTLE OF FIVE ARMIES

So we watched a couple flicks over the holidays:

1) X-Men First Class or whatever. Ugh. I mean look, there's a great movie here with a couple really awesome actors but then there's everything else. I do not understand the love for the x-men movies. Shitty visual effects, terrible costumes, GIANT plot holes (and I can normally overlook giant plot holes but man these films find some amazing ones), etc. I mean, I'd watch Fassbender sit on the toilet and read so I'll see the next one but good lord, anytime he or Mcavoy (who was also great) wasn't the focus the whole movie (especially the VFX, sweet zombie jesus were the effects for the kids terrible) took a nosedive. Look, I'm not a fan of the series, I think they are all terrible, the first two have some good stuff going on but they look worse and worse (especially the effects) over time. I'm open to having my mind changed, which is why I keep watching them, but they just don't work for me.

2) The Imposter: WOW. Documentary from the folks who produced Man on Wire. It's about a French guy who passed himself off as a 15 year old kid who had been kidnapped from TEXAS. Incredible. Watch it. Now.

3) Despicable Me: Finally got around to seeing this. Really good. Very funny. Bought the pack of movies on iTunes so we will watch the next one soon as well. What a cast.

The only issue I had overall with First Class is Fassbender has a really hard time hiding his accent.

Watched Europa Report last night. Pretty decent space thriller, no jump scares, just an interesting take on humans running into worst-case scenarios in the deeper parts of the solar system.

Desolation of Smaug was boring as hell when there wasn't A) a dragon or B) Legolas on screen. It was pretty though

Wolf of Wall Street was a masterpiece. Best movie of the year.

American Hustle was good.
