Nintendo didn't anticipate becoming popular again, but apparently so many new 3DS's and Wii U's were purchased as gifts or in sales this year that all of Nintendo's online services have been down for the past (as of this post) 40 hours. The damn Pokebank is supposed to be up and running tomorrow, which will hold 3000 Pokemon per customer, and they aren't even prepared for new network ID sign-ups or software/firmware updates.

This is pathetic for a company that's been in gaming for longer than I've been alive. Then they're all proud of themselves that Mario 3D World's online scoreboards came up, when 3DS transfers, both consoles' eshops, etc, cannot be accessed.

Yesterday I was annoyed because it impacted a couple of family Christmas presents, but today I'm just sad for Nintendo. I really thought with the last 3DS update and the changes to Pokemon online features that they were finally getting with the times as far as online goes.

The pokebank is being pushed back anyway, because their online method of stopping the transfer of hacked pokemon was proven ineffective.

We invested in two 2DS's and three 3DS's for our older children, and noticed updates weren't working Christmas morning.

I told them they'd probably have to wait awhile, sounds like my guess about the servers being overloaded was right.

Funny thing is, Nintendo knows exactly how many systems were sold, and how many of those had already connected leading up to Christmas. It would have been relatively simple math to make a guess as to how many would start trying to connect Christmas morning in the US.

Here's hoping that Nintendo gets their systems back up and running. I also want to get to the eShop at some point Among the things I've gotten is a 35$ Nintendo eShop card.

I don't think it's the same thing. Nintendo has allowed their whole online network to collapse because they were not prepared for their own success.

I wonder if the items that are on discount right now will have their time limits extended.

Pretty sure Steam crashed for a pretty big chunk of the day on Wednesday. I know that LoL's online store failed at redeeming their money based things as well. Let's not jump on Nintendo for also having holiday traffic related issues.

Keep in mind that I expect Nintendo's online services to suck, but there's a point where bitching is just bitching.

I guess I thought their online services had turned around. Maybe I'm less pissed at Nintendo and more pissed at myself for having faith in them that they were finally catching up in their online with other gaming companies.

It seems like it's back up now. I hope Nintendo remembers this and will be better prepared in the future--maybe even not keep all services on the same server set.

Over 48 hours. Seems to be okay now.

I wouldn't have been so annoyed except my wife was supposed to open her 3DS on Christmas and find The Starship Dampry on the Home screen. She knows she's getting it, but still. Also, my cousin got a 3DS XL and wanted to transfer his stuff from his smaller 3DS while I was at his house to oversee the process. It's not like Nintendo ruined anything for us--there are kids who got eshop gift cards, un-updated Pokemon games, etc who had bigger problems--but it is annoying and I (stupidly) expected better.

Steam crashed and I missed out on L4D2 (not that I'm really interested, but hey, free good game :p). PS3's network went down for, what, 3 WEEKS? GOG had invested heavily in extra infrastructure before the Winter Sales and it *still* completely and utterly crashed until they quadrupled their capacity. Blizzard can't launch a new game without weeks of issues. EA....heh.

On the one hand, you'd think these corporations would learn after a while. On the other hand, it seems people get riled up for a few days/weeks, and 6 months later, people don't remember. It's become "pretty common" to crash upon a new release or a big influx of users. I think the difference in capacity necessary between "normal peek usage" and "roll-out of new product/special sale/new feature" is so big a crash has just become "already expected" andis calculated it. So what if you lose 1% of customers over it, if solving it involves temporary doubling up (or more) on server capacity? It simply isn't worth the investment.

I don't think the hacking incident counts the same.

It was worse.

EDIT: Look, I get that these things happen. I just found the timing ridiculous and again, I probably put too much faith in Nintendo. They've been really kicking ass throughout 2013 and restoring my faith in them as a company. I look forward to each Nintendo Direct--I feel like they have a more intimate interaction with their player-base between that and taking suggestions from players. I was a bit taken aback by this, which is why I got pissed. I have more myself to blame for that. If it was PSN that went down the last couple days, I wouldn't have been so annoyed, because I expect it from Sony. Now I know to expect it from Nintendo too.

Meanwhile, my Wii - remember that thing? You know, the future of social gaming? - is collecting dust because they pretty much shut down everything useful when they intro'ed the WiiU.
