Kags' Cosplay Thread

Legolas (I think?) and boobs... well now I'm confused and conflicted. But awesome dress, it looks great on you.
Yes, it's Legolas. He's been my favorite since I read the books ages ago, so seeing this dress, it was made for the fangirl in me.

And thank you! I mean, it's kind of a scary dress to wear; it's like a second skin, there is no hiding in that. So, I'm glad it looks okay.

Are you a beaver? Cause dam.
Aw, Jay, you're back!

Okay guys, I would really like your opinions and help making a decision here:

So, this was supposed to be a surprise, but eh, I'll reveal it for now, I'm switching to Hades next year for Super Princesses. Which, I'm SO excited for! I already have a Meg to partner with me, it'll be awesome.

Anyway, problem comes in with..wig choices. I've found two that I really like, but...UGH, I just can't pick.

Wig 1:

So, this wig is from my favorite, most trusted wig store. It's a US company, which means it will actually fit me. (Wigs on ebay are made for Asian heads which are quite a bit smaller than my fat American head.) I know I can trust this store, I know the wig will be thick, I know the quality will be amazing. But...the colors aren't perfect. If I go with this choice, I'll buy some extra fiber to sew into the topmost layer, because Hades' hair is darkest at his roots.

Wig 2:

So, this wig the coloring is just PERFECT. It has the proper gradient and the blues are nearly perfect. Which is awesome. But...being from ebay, I know I'll run into the problem I previously mentioned, I can guarantee it will be to small. I mean, I've dealt with that problem before, when I first started cosplaying all my wigs were small. But...now that there's a better company, it's hard to go back to Ebay for me. Also, I don't trust that the quality will be amazing and it will be much thinner than wig 1.

So, I dunno. Conundrum. Do you guys think I could get away with having more colors than what Hades actually has, or should I bite the bullet and go back to ebay? Help me Halfies!

For reference:

I've got lots of time, I don't need this until July. But I'm just getting excited and want to plan everyone now and begin buying things. >_<

The modifications I would make to both wigs would be simple - I know that Arda doesn't modify wigs for customers, they're simply a seller. But adding wefts to the top half for the Arda wig and sewing two wigs together for the ebay aren't difficult, so the workload doesn't sway me much. I just can't decide colors and...UGH I love Arda, but...ebay wig!

Thanks for the thoughts Stieny. :)

I don't know how you could do it, maybe with LED strands or what, but it'd be cool if you could get your hair to change color from orange to blue and back like Hades does.

Well there goes all that time she had. :p

I actually think the first wig looks perfect for what Hades's hair would look like if it was actually... you know, hair. But I might not be as huge a stickler for accuracy as Kags is.

Depending on what the wig's made of...Couldn't you "just" (I know it'd still be an annoying and labor-intensive process I wouldn't want to do) die the Arda wig to exactly where you want it? If it's polyesther or some such, that won't work, but most higher-quality wigs tend to be dyable (or however you're supposed to write that. Silly language you speak!)

I could and the idea is FANTASTIC, don't get me wrong, but I'm not going go. :) It's just not my jive.

Yes, but...when they have exisiting fiber I could just sew in...there's no point in dying it. The only thing I want to change on the Arda wig is to add the dark blue roots, that's it. Otherwise, I'm really happy with the color. And I can't dye the ebay wig.

I'm taking all of your thoughts as a general concensus that the Arda wig is all around better. Yes? Yes. :D

I like the first one for a distaff Hades, however if you were going super kawaii anime distaff hades do the second the way it is shown. :3

No kawaii. If I got the second wig, I wasn't planning on keeping the pigtails in any way (I probably should've mentioned that), I would dismantle them and sew the extra fiber into the wig. :D

Without the pigtails I would go with wig 1, it's a trusted company and you can be sure of the quality. It just seems like the smarter decision. You're smart I am sure whatever decision you make your cosplay is going to look amazing.

Thanks Doc! :D

I'm so excited for this you guys, I can't wait to have more updates for you and to share more cosplay adventures. I really love and appreciate you all, even if I don't post othat often. You guys are gold.

It's a shame there isn't some way to make the tips start to lick a bit of yellow/orange here and there.

There is actually. My husband is working on some resistive circut board something or other which will dim the lights, making them look like they're flickering, he would just need to add more colors to the blue and white we already have. But, again, the idea is fantastic, it's just not what I want to do. :) Hades only has orange/red flames when he's angry. And I'm not angry, nor do I want my version Hades to be angry. Thanks so much for the ideas though! Maybe I can do it at a later date.

Look what I have!!

Also...may be NSFW ish....

There are still things I want to improve - I still don't like this fur. And I'm hoping to figure out a way that I can emote while wearing the mask. It doesn't really allow for much facial expressions, which makes me feel dull. Anyway, I had so much fun! And I have the best friends - I texted her on a whim that morning and was all 'Photo shoot please??' and she was kind enough to oblige.

*awesome pictures snipped*
Since the mask obscures your eyebrows and eyes, emoting will come mostly from the mouth, head, and body language. I think the natural instinct in trying to make expressions through the mask is to exaggerate them, but I think the best bet would be to go for subtle. A slight half-smile, a cock of the head, or pose of the body will all contribute to the emotion you're trying to emit.

Also, you might try the Hollywood method of emoting, which is to say finding (or making) a diamond mask that has a set of highly arched eyebrows attached/molded in. Perhaps not as good for video, but it may make "emoting" easier for still photography.

I'll try to remember this.

I think my main concern about emoting is that any facial movement I make, it pulls at the adhesive and I run the risk of loosening the mask. I love the look of my latex mask - it's gorgeous. But I don't even trust trying to smile when it's glued to my face because I don't want it to fall off.

Do you have any examples you could show me? I'm not sure I understand what you mean exactly...

It can be something simple...
images.jpeg

(more of a cowl, I know, but the top part could be molded to "suggest" eyebrows, or the upper edges ^^ could be traced with white somehow to suggest arched white eyebrows)

...or the mask itself could be tailored to suggest a particular expression:

("angry/determined eyes")

Keep in mind that I'm no cosplayer/costumer, so I know I might be suggesting something that will not actually be possible outside of animation or multiple costume changes.

It may also be that that particular mask simply feels too big for your face, to me. Take my stranger-on-the-Internet comments for whatever they are worth to you, it's my wife who is the one into costuming, and she's not around right now for me to ask.

--Patrick

It being to big is actually quite possible! I had never thought of that before. Black Cat's mask is a specific shape so I don't think I could change anything about it, except for the size.

But that's a great idea! :D

Errr, nice brick wall you're standing in front of? Took me only 5 minutes to find it! :p

*dammit*

Heatherling!!! I miss your pretty face in my life! And thank you!

That's a good idea!

I have found faux fur that I like - it has 3 in. long pile! But it's really expensive, so I've been putting it off buying...I feel like I just need to bite the bullet and do it.
