Austin Bound! Any advice?

I know, I swore I would never, ever return to Texas after my years there, but really, Austin doesn't count. I scored a free ticket with the last of my miles (which is funny, it cost less miles to fly there than San Antonio, but if I had paid for the ticket it would have been cheaper to fly to San Ant. Whats up with that?) and me my buddies who live there have gotten our tickets to NIN/Soundgarden/Deathgrips in August!

I haven't seen these guys in many years, they were my best friends during our teens/early 20's so I'm really excited. A little nervous, one of them is a ex-Special Forces guy and he's apparently super messed up now, so while we both love him dearly we know he can be really hard to deal with.

Anyway, I'm so excited, what else should I do while I'm in Austin? Cool places, etc? I know I want to hit a movie at the Alamo for sure but thats about it.

I was in Austin for a few years, now Houston :(

Work is slightly jerking me around about moving to the Austin office still, I'll see what happens. I could very well be there in August, who knows!

Franklin's BBQ is the best BBQ in the US. Unfortunately it's a 3hr wait in line that starts around 8am (they don't open till 11) otherwise there's some good options like Green Mesquite (Featured in Diners, Drive-ins and Dives)

6th Street is the meccha of live music. There's about 50-60 Bars/Venues between 6th St, 5th St and Congress combined.

Alamo Drafthouse/Flix Brewhouse is an experience in movies you'll have trouble finding anywherelse. It's a great screen theatre mashed together with a pretty kickass restraurant. It never gets in the way of the actual movies and the food/liquor is fanastic (if a bit pricey) Flix Brewhouse even brews it's own beer on site.

San Marcos and Round Rock both have outdoor outlet malls with great name brand stores with super affordable prices.

Chinatown/Asiantown may be smaller than most other cities but the Vietnamese and Korean food there is unmatched.

Don't bother with the malls, there's literally nothing in either one that's special in any sort of way that you haven't seen in malls anywherelse.

We have two museums downtown that have excellent exhibits that you'll lose hours in without a minute of feeling bored.

We have a few walking trails and Mt.Bonnel is more of a giant hill but when you reach the top there's an amazing view of the city that can't be missed. The peacock garden/walking trail is also very beautiful and right now is an excellent time of year (weather wise to check out either one).

Lake Lady Bird is a fantastic place to either go walking, have a nice lunch or go down to the paddle boat rentals and enjoy some time on the water.

The restaurants around the lake have amazing outdoor patios where you can eat and watch the sun go down over the mountains. It's just amazing to see and the food is pretty fantastic (I recommend Hula Hutt, it's a great mixutre of Mexican+Hawaiian).

These are the things off the top of my head so if I come up with anymore I'll post up.

also I'm blanking on the name of that springs that's pretty close to downtown, but it's fun freshwater swimming and hanging out. It's really cold, but in August it'll be like 110 outside so

Thankfully, as usual, you're wrong ;)

Just so that I'm not coming off as pure Charlie hating, please do tell what's the difference. It's not the theatre, because the screens are actually better quality (better digital system), the food is equally as amazing and cheaper, the beer is better at Flix (much more variety). The only thing Alamo does better is better intro trailers and special events for older movies.

No matter how tempting it is, resist the temptation to go to a gun show and buy a pile of assault rifles. You don't have to listen to every fourth billboard that demands your attendance and patronage.

I think actually once you enter Texas airspace you get your choice of AR-15 or a Shotgun from a Stewardess. It's right after drink service.

And seriously, thanks guys, some awesome stuff in here. Now as long as we can keep our ex-special forces friend from trying to kill anyone* it should be a good trip!


*sadly I'm only kind of joking
