Chile earthquakes

Many earthquakes have hit chile over the last few days. Just last night it had two 7+ magnitude earthquakes! only slightly less powerful than the first earthquake they had two days ago.

Fortunately their building codes were updated due to the disastrous quakes they had in 1960, so the damage and loss of life are much, much lower than they might have otherwise been.

Still, big quakes, and they are still going on...

I've been paying attention to the earthquakes in Chile. I have to keep my eye on them, plus Alaska and Asia. The plate subduction in/near Chile is scary.

It's 88mm per year. That's a huge amount of movement for what we like to consider rock.

Have you had any tsunami warnings as a result? I heard warnings were issued up and down the coast of south america, but you are well within that region to be worried about it...

Late Tuesday night-early Wednesday morning there was an advisory, but it didn't escalate to a warning. There were no land evacuations, but all the beaches were closed until 8am yesterday. Hanauma Bay, which gets particularly nasty currents when these things happen, will reopen today. One of the news outlets had a list of the changes in ocean level around 3:40 am Wednesday, but most were a matter of inches.[DOUBLEPOST=1396550970,1396550432][/DOUBLEPOST]@stienman This isn't the original article I saw, but it has a listing of "wave activity" around the state and some other info.
Tsunami advisory lifted.

Nicaragua has been hit by several big quakes over the past couple of weeks, they believe part of it is related to volcanic activity. Lake Managua has dropped by over 50 feet during the same time. They have the country on high alert and have set up mobile hospitals all over the country in anticipation of a large event.
