[TV] The Walking Dead

And I love that she didn't start that way. Not that she was ever useless, but she certainly wasn't a badass before. Her character has grown and changed in so many ways.

So many great parts in this opening ...

Everyone pulling out buttons, belt buckles, anything they could fashion into a weapon ... just so awesome.
Though it didn't work out the way Glen wanted, when he had them go save the guy in the boxcar, and they just started cutting through the herd, my only thought was "I love you guys!"
Yeah, Tyrese! Kill that fucking baby hater.
Seeing them get on the tracks in single file was fantastic. They have a sizable group going right now, and formidable ... unfortunately this means some of them won't see the end of this season.
That end teaser--damn!

We're off to a good start.

I remember in one of the teasers they had a scene in which one character mentions they "lost three people" or something. That could just mean they got separated, but could mean three people will be dying. We got any theories? Here is my picks.

I know one of the producers keeps wanting to have "little victories" in the series, so that it's not super bleak. That is why Judith is still alive and likely why Glenn didn't die at the slaughterhouse (as it was very reminiscent of how he died in the comics). Because of this I don't think Glenn, Maggie, Carl, Judith, Daryl, or Rick will die. My picks are Tyreese (saving Sasha), Carol (closing her arc), Rosita, and maybe Eugene, after some things are discovered.

That really was a great start to the season. I said before that I was losing interest in the show and was considering not watching. But I can't deny that I've become invested in some of these characters. And the gore is always great in the show. Carol's badassary alone was worth tuning in.

So yeah, I'll stick around for now, if it maintains this quality.

My wife and I marathoned last season on Netflix and then watched the season premiere on Sunday. Even after shotgunning (pun intended) last season, we weren't prepared for
the slaughterhouse. Holy jeez that was way more brutal than I was ready for. We almost shut it off for a break. Quite intense. We were very happy about the ending with Judith and Tyreese.

Was the black guy at the end of the episode introduced earlier in a previous season? He looks familiar.

It's Morgan, the guy that Rick first meets after leaving the hospital in the beginning of the first season. Rick shelters up with him and gets his strength back before heading to Atlanta and meeting up with the group he has been a part of now. Morgan appears again in the third season having gone a bit deranged after losing his son. It looks like they are bringing him back.

Oh yeah! I forgot about him! Thanks!

To be fair to your criticisms earlier in the thread, this episode also would've made sense as a season 4 finale. It wraps up most of the season 4 threads and arcs, and still has some stuff at the end to tease at the coming episodes.

Wife and I finished season 3 on the Netflix; re-watch for me, first time for her.

I forgot how much Andrea = dumbfuck.
I can't help but feel a little sorry that they probably all thought it was going to be a big, sad, and hugely impactful moment, but the majority of the world was celebrating when she was finally killed off.

If the showrunners really thought that, then that's a little naive.

Merle's death in the previous episode was the big, sad, hugely impactful moment on a character no one expected to give a shit about. They weren't going to make that lightning strike twice two episodes in a row, especially when Merle went down fighting while Andrea kept stopping ... and staring ... and stopping ... and chatting ... and staring ... and stopping. OOPS I dropped it! Staring ...

Funny thing is, season 2 I was so tired of Laurie, but when it got to her moment, I was really upset. She came through at the end and it ended up being a big deal. That episode was devastating. Didn't happen with Andrea. I believe my exact words were "And so ends a stupid life." I think she was the only character whose death didn't stir my emotions at least a tiny bit. I'm just glad she wasn't there to screw things up anymore; I can't imagine how much worse she would've made certain situations in season 4 had she been there.

It still makes me sad that Andrea was one of the best, most popular characters in the comic. Yet the character got a completely raw deal in the show because of terrible writing.

I know, I know. Whine whine whine about the comics. Don't care. Bugs me BECAUSE she's still , even now, one of the best characters in the comic. She's the badass of the group like Merle is in the show. It wouldn't bug me as much if she wasn't such a great, pivotal character in the comic.

I don't think it was terrible writing; I think they chose that role for her. It's pretty consistent throughout the show; too much for it to have been an accident. Like with who lives and dies, they seemed to have wanted to change things up.

Also, I think you meant Derle. :p

Also also ...

I wonder if Beth was eaten ...

Also, I think Bob was bit, so I hope they all get infected. Or he gets to bite them; something like that.
But they've already established that everyone is already infected, so I don't see what difference that would make to a bunch of cannibals.

Comics Spoiler:
TAINTED MEAT! TAINTED MEAT!

Bites are different. If it was just a matter of everyone being infected, the bites themselves wouldn't mean anything. And since the problem from a bite can be stopped through amputation, there is something in the bite that spreads.

The general consensus is that because zombies eat all kinds of awful shit and just leave it in their mouths, it just rots into a bacterial mess that makes any bite exceptionally prone to infection. Truth be told, being bitten by a human is already pretty bad, infection wise.

But in Walking Dead, scratches are also a death sentence. And it wouldn't be 100% of the time that a bite would be lethal in that case. So I still think there must be some extra push from what's in the walkers.

To put it bluntly, it's not likely we have a lot of instances of people being bitten by corpses in real life to compare this too. Regardless, a rotting body is a magnet for all kinds of dangerous shit and it's one of the reasons why we bury/cremate bodies today. It's just not safe to be around them when they start to rot.

Also, scratches aren't a death sentence, or at least we've never seen anyone get killed by one. Sure, Tiny was scratched by a gore covered bone (which means the infected gore might be responsible) but we never actually saw him turn. He was killed on the spot instead. This doesn't mean a scratch wouldn't have been lethal but it's entirely likely that no one is willing to risk it at this point. I mean... why would you?

My wife had to point out that Bob's leg was missing. She was like, "OMG." And, I was like, "Wha--?" And she was like, "THEY ARE EATING HIM!" And, I was like, "Dammit. I missed the moment of shock!"

Really though, I was just scared they were going to bonk him on the head and slice his throat. I hated that scene.

You get bit, within a day you have the fever, and then you die. What seems to vary is how long it takes you to come back, but it seems like if this was just a matter of getting necrotic flesh and its diseases into the bloodstream, no one would know what the hell was going to happen next. It doesn't sound like any normal kind of infection. I think it's less the flesh. Nails, teeth, bone like in the case with Tiny--these seem to give off something that kills you like clockwork. I mean, if it was the gore, they should all be dead by now from how much walker blood and guts have splattered into their eyes and mouths and on wounded individuals.

When Bob showed them: HAHA, EAT IT YOU FUCKS.

Rick going for the red-handled machete: YES, YES, DO IT.

That stuff made me happy. Bob's death did not; I was pissed at him in early season 4 for the alcohol stuff, but he really grew on me later.

Now we wait to see

if they found Beth.

I'm wondering if the cross-labeled vehicles and the well-stocked house that Daryl and Beth found has more tied in with Gabriel. Because it's clear from the vehicle's presence that Officer Rapist up and kidnapped Beth, but someone was living in that house out there.

Yes I was actually disappointed, because it seems that whole story has been utterly dropped. What about the dog? Who took down the alarms and herded the zombies to the front door? At first it was easy to assume it was the people in the car, but based on how they are presenting the car group, it just so happens that while one unknown person was fucking them over in the house, another group just so happens to come across Beth fighting a zombie? What?

I don't think it's Gabrial, that place they found was pretty far from Terminus, while Gabrial's church seems within visible smoke distance. Considering how useless he seemed for the most part, I would be surprised if he could travel that far on his own, on foot.

On the other hand, the car was near Gabriel's place. Something else might still be up.

Also

I think the clash will come for the mid-season finale, and we're probably not going to be happy with the results.
