[News] The Hack of Sony.

Not sure if you guys have been following this, but it's really wild. A hacker group calling itself #GOP got almost completely unrestricted access to Sony's entire network. They stole over 100 TB of data and have only released a small portion of it - like SSNs, totally unreleased movies, scripts that have not even been shot, criminal background checks, medical records. You name it, it has been gotten.

How can such a big and supposedly smart company have such abysmal data security?

The news coverage is driving me bonkers. They keep going on and on about how this is the first hack of its kind "on an American company."

Sony isn't an american company.

Looks like the people behind it may very well be....North Korea.

:Leyla:
That's what I heard early on too. Apparently the software they used to do the intrusion had korean language in it. Speculation is it's in retaliation for Sony's upcoming movie that features a plot to kill Dear Leader.

So this is all Seth Rogan and James Franco's fault?

North Korea could also be massive Xbox fanboys.

In seriousness though, this is a pretty devastating blow to Sony (which is already in rough shape) and to the thousands of people who's livelihoods are at stake.

Playstation Network hacked, brought down. Hacker group claims responsibility.

From my layman's view, this seems quite different from the movie hack last week. This one merely brought down PSN, while the movie hack was a theft of data. I could easily be wrong though.
It appears to just be a DDOS attack, so no info should've been taken. However, they are saying there will be "more to come," so whether that means against PSN or Sony in general, no idea.

They'd better not get people's data again. Sony should've upped the PSN's security after last time and it'll be a major failing on their part if they fuck that up again.

I don't think anyone can reasonably claim that Sony should have been ready to counter and prevent an attack from a state-sponsered source. That's like blaming your bank because it got robbed by the North Korean People's Army.

...okay, at this point, I can only guess that this is a marketing ploy to promote the film, because this is just silly.

I mean, sure, I keep my passwords in a text file on my computer, but they're obfuscated, the file isn't named "StealMePasswordsHereInPlain.TXT" or anything, and it's one of my old computers so it is kept offline.

Aha, let's see what's in this "notporn" folder...

... huh, it's not porn.

You jest, but I used to keep a folder named something like "Totally Not Porn" in my Documents folder.
In it? An empty folder named "Made You Look."

I'm just that kind of person.

My porn used to be hidden in a folder in my /Lionhead/Black and White/Creatures/Creatures Mind directory. No one would ever think to go searching for porn in a video game's directory, especially not among the files that controlled my creature's AI.

I liked to go around searching for other people's porn when I got to borrow their computers, though. Usually I'd leave a text file called FoundIt.txt when I did.

Dude, I have porn on my computer that is 16 years old.

Er, the file creation date. Not the star.
I knew a guy who bought a terabyte hard drive back when they first came out so he would have room for his porn. He was what one would call a connoisseur. Or maybe gross.
