Legend of Korra

Congratulations time-skip Meelo, you have just replaced pre-air nomad Kai as my least favorite Air-bender.

Absolutely LOVED Korra's "Empire Strikes" style inward journey though, and bad-ass granny Toph is always fun.

Soooo yeah, things are ramping up pretty quick.

-I love Varrick again. Such an entertaining bastard.
-Curious to see where the story with whats her face and her father goes and how it ties in with the rest.
-Can't believe Bolin went along with it all for so long.
-DAMN good dual, and now we have a hint of why it was so one-sided.

Pretty clear that Kuvira
is linked with Vaatu, right? That's my theory, anyway.

Edit: Wait, never mind. Watched it again and read a recap. I was too much into the moment and didn't realize Kuvira
actually looked like Korra, so that's what Korra was seeing: herself. For some reason.

The thing with Kuvira...

Korra still hasn't taken her lesson to heart. Toph explained to her that she needs to move on from her past defeats, embracing and understanding her weakness so that she can grow stronger. I think Korra still feels that it was the poison that was holding her back, not her own fear and insecurities over her role in the world. This was plain to see in her approach to this: Korra wasn't willing to fight until there was no other choice because she'd failed every time she'd tried to fight in the past. She's still letting her insecurities run her life.

Of course, Toph's lesson was also the key to defeating Kuvira: if Korra can undermine Kuvira's faith in her own beliefs, she'll ether give up or won't be able to put up a fight.

Yeah, for a second I thought
Kuvira went into the Avatar State as well, and I was like "WHOOOOOOOA". Then I understood what was happening and I was like "...oh."

However,
That little dog spirit could SEE the thing torturing Korra, so I have a feeling Kuvira has something to do with the evil spirit, and that's why she was so confident in the duel

Latest ep: Reunion

Real cool seeing team Avatar almost whole, ALSO-
Kuvira wants to cut down...all the swamp vines for their resources. YUP, we've gone environmental. Good thing thing this is an Avatar series or else I'd be worried.

Is there ANYTHING GOOD that can be said of the Earth Kingdom at this point? This is the timeline for them ATM.

- Chinese style Imperial Dynasty, where the Emperor is basically a figurehead and his court ruins the entire country in order to preserve their power
- Korean style Imperial Dynasty, where the Emperor does whatever they fucking want and no one opposes them because that is just how it is done
- The current style, which is turning into a North Korean style dictatorship where a charismatic leader controls the entirety of government through force and inspiration, while quietly removing any naysayers, people outside the ethnic majority, or just anyone who could challenge her power. Kuvira is basically promoting Juche at this point.

I mean really... it's literally as bad as when the Fire Nation was in control, except they'd just throw you in prison if you caused trouble. What the people of the Earth Kingdom are willing to do TO THEIR OWN PEOPLE is abominable.

It's a clip episode this week, thanks to Nick slashing the budget partway into the season, so it was ether this or fire 30 artists. (And that IS the official reason, according to the official twitter).

That said... it's not bad. It's got 5 minutes of entirely new animation and chibi-pop ups of characters during some of the stories. The Korra's story was a bit weak but Mako talking to the Earth Prince about his love life was priceless...

... especially when Earth Prince, Mako's grandmother, and his cousin Tu all agree that he's kind of a fucking dirt bag for... well just about everything he did. This stuff really made the Earth Prince grow on me...

However, the best story by far is Bolin's story (as told by Varrick).

In order to turn Bolin into the hero, they literally paste a spirit version of his face onto Korra's body during the fight with Unalaq... and cut to the black and white Nuck-tuck movers during scenes where Korra fights Zaheer.

The FUNNIEST thing? A four-way phonecall between Zombie Amon, Nuck-tuck mover Unalaq, Vaatu (stuck in the tree) and Zaheer. They do this by crudely drawing and pasting telephones into the hands of Unalaq, Vaatu, and Zaheer and having Amon talk into his microphone. It's awful looking and intentionally so.

They actually made it into an amusing episode. It's no Ember Island Players but it's still entertaining.

SO I just had a thought... you know who would REALLY hate Kuvira? Zaheer. She literally represents everything he hates.

I almost kind of wish he could be redeemed, because he would basically destroy her and her entire philosphy in a matter of minutes.

That would be so cool, and if the ep before they team up involves Korra talking to Zaheer in a Hannibal Lecter style scene I am ALL for it.

And honestly, this is EXACTLY what needs to happen. Korra's failure to learn from her opponents and their motivations is the reason why she's so completely worthless right now. Zaheer may want Korra to die, but he also wants people to be free and I don't think he'd be willing to let an entire nation live under oppression just to spite her. He's beyond that. He has detached himself from all emotion and embraced the Void completely... he is literally so free of earthly attachment that he can fly.

So honestly? Korra talking to Zaheer might be the best thing that could happen to her. By being forced to see his perspective, she might realize that all she needs to do to beat Kuvira is destroy her philosophy by making her realize that she has become exactly what she tried to replace.

New episode up and it's pretty good.

Fucking NAILED IT. Kinda. I don't think we're going to get the philosophical final battle I really wanted, but seeing Zaheer and accepting she lost was the key to breaking free of her weakness... and Zaheer being willing to help is entirely because he knows how bad he fucked up. He may not like Korra but he's not going to let people suffer out of spite ether... which is why he's the best villain in the series.

I think this storyline would have been a bit longer if they didn't have to do that clipshow episode. This screams two-parter. It's still a great episode in a season of great episodes.

LOVED this episode, just a downright great soul-search episode mixed with a sprinkling of philosophical compromise. Also
Zaheer was wielding his glorious glorious beard again so I'm happy there.

There isn't much to talk about with this week's episode...

While it's true that Korra was basically trying to be nicer about what Unaluq did, she was still planning to use them to win the battle... but the refusal of the spirits to get involved is only going to push them out of the human world again. All anyone is going to see is that spirit power is being used to harm humans again and I don't see how they can make things better.

OH MY RAAVA I TOTALLY DID NOT EXPECT-
JU-LEE TO BETRAY KUVIRA-said no one ever. Though while I saw this twist coming a mile away, it was nice seeing everybody make up in the end. And as for the spirits not enlisting...that's gonnna be a tough bridge to cross. After UnaVaatu used them for his own gains, its gonna take a really grande dramatic gesture to get them to fight with humans.

Finale

Prince Wu is, by far, my favorite character of the final season. Having to slum it for awhile really made him a better person and showed why he'll probably be fine as the Earth King (or would have been anyway). He's more like his grandfather than his mother at any rate.

Mr. Sato! I'm glad you showed up again.

Oh, and fuck that ending. I have to go into DOUBLE spoiler for that one, but suffice to say, I'm disappointed they didn't have the guts to just come out and say it.

Agreed, Wu had some of the best development this season.

Mr Sato...you are forgiven.

And yeah I was hoping they'd outright say it too, but I think the hand-holding and eye-locking was obvious enough.

All in all, a good closure point for the series in my opinion.

I suspect we're going to get more of the franchise eventually, but it's almost certain it will never be full seasons of anything, especially if they want to keep it digital and NickToons only. I kind of wish they'd just do a persistent comic series instead of these small runs.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much this. Get some spin-offs in there, Mako starting a detective agency where he falls in love with a female side character from the previous series who dies in some sad way, ALL up ons. Of course the only female recurring characters are eithe married or children so....yeah probably best not to go Angel in this case. Please detract my all up ons endorsement.

But really when I get the money I would TOTES get some Korra comis. Especially if that thing in our(and the creator's) head canon was in it. Because dear lord was it implied to all hell.

BUT if there's one cute canon thing to enjoy from this -
GO TEAM JUVARRICK!

Wow. Just fantastic.

Ash,
They really couldn't come right out and say it. Doing so would have made it impossible to air in quite a few countries which are less, shall we say, accepting. It's why Adventure Time doesn't reveal that Bubblegum and Marceline were an item.

I would love to go back to the beginning of the season though knowing what I know now. Puts a whole new spin on certain things.

Bonnie and Marcie haven't been a thing at least as long as Finn has been alive, if not way, way longer and what they have/had is subdued enough that it reasonably called something other than full on romance at this point. There really isn't much denying what happened in Korra, unless you think they went on a just friends vacation, as they gazed into each other's eyes respectfully.

Yes, but perhaps they wanted some plausible deniability. Sheesh.

sure, it's obvious enough, but showing it explicitly is still going to cause problems. It's like how it's obvious that Zaheer killed the Earth Queen, but they still couldn't outright show it, cutting away at the last second, and no one can say "killed", just that he "took her out".

Its gonna be a while before they can out right say it on kids shows, the closest we got was two guys kissing each other on the cheek on "Clarence". Originally it was going to be an open mouth kiss but you know how it is.

Gotta admit didn't see that coming. I mean looking back it's a perfectly natural progression but I honestly hadn't seen them going that way with the romance of the show. But kudos to the Korra writers for making the bold choice and the directors for really selling it. Loved the last episode.

Only small complaint was that the fights between the Megamech and team Avatar seemed like neither was really a threat to the other they just spent like 20 minutes flailing at each other. It had cool moments like Bolin and the Beifong sisters dropping buildings on the mech but for the most part it was made clear that they couldn't do shit to the Mech and the writers didn't have the guts to have the mech do anything to team Avatar. Course once Asami's dad got crushed flat I was all in with the episode.

Spoilers? I know a few people haven't watched it yet, @Dubyamn.

The problem with the mecha is that it was impossibly precise with it's cannon, when it should have been almost impossible to actually aim it, especially over distance (like how it nails the building there are in several miles away at one point). But without the cannon, it's much less threatening... and really, there were several things they SHOULD have done to try and stop it.

- make a sinkhole under the street via earthbending and luring it there
- ice over the streets to limit it's movement
- icing the windows once they activated the sprayers
- flinging explosives at it

The only reason it was threatening in the slightest is because they didn't really try much to stop it.

I guess it was just this week. I shotgunned the last 6 episodes so my brain was telling me "Oh it's been over forever now.

To me the entire idea of what they could have done or should have done became entirely academic since they actually did manage to knock it down but then it just got back up like nothing happened. Nothing they could have done or would have done could really do anything to the mech. It would have just climbed out of the sinkhole, used the buildings to steady itself in case of ice blah blah blah. Nothing they had at their disposal was going to ding it cause the Megamech was just that powerful which is why that fight was so boring.
