[Movies] The DC Cinematic Universe - The David Zazlav Dumpster Fire.

This is also the first time he's taken a villain role because he saw villain roles as beneath him. I wonder what happened?
Technically a villain, but the squad themselves are still the main protagonists of the film. It's no different than him playing a total scumbag conman in Focus, he is still the main character.

After Earth happened.

No, seriously. That movie cratering and not having a major hit since Hancock made him apparently completely re-evaluate how he choses projects.

So James Wan (Furious 7, Conjuring, Saw I, Insidious 1 and 2) is directing and writing Aquaman. Should be interesting. Sidenote, he's apparently working on the live-action Robotech as well.

I really like Wan's work and he'd be a great fit for an Aquaman vs Cthulu-esque movie.

But...it's WB. So not seeing it.

EDIT: I'm sorry. That broken record is probably getting really fucking irritating. I'll try to stop.

Nah, you're putting voice to what a lot of us feel. WB's lost credibility with the fans. All it takes is those to initials for what looked like a cool idea to turn into...

It depends how much producer dicking-around is done by WB. I was willing to see Wonder Woman before they canned the last director due to a disagreement over vision. If they can Wan, I'm out on this one too. In the meantime, I'm curious.

But I totally understand everyone who is already out.

I love that almost every weekend, the crew of Cinema Snob's Midnight Screenings take a moment to bash either Man of Steel or the Batman v Superman trailer they've probably seen 20+ times by now. Talking about the earthquake disaster movie San Andreas "Superman, you saved us" while part of California has been completely destroyed.

It's been announced that Sandman and all movies based upon Vertigo properties will be released through New Line Pictures.

Meanwhile, it looks like Dark Universe, the DC film centered around their more mystical or monstrous characters being developed by Guillermo del Toro, looks to still be happening...except without Guillermo del Toro anymore.

I feel really bad about del Toro. None of his video game projects have come to life (and now he's kind of turned off on them because of it) and now his movie stuff is getting compromised as well.

del Toro reminds me of Tim Burton, both innovative film makers that are about 10% away from making good movies.
Man I don't care what anyone says, Hellboy 1 and 2 and Pan's Labyrinth are great flicks. Pacific Rim is fun as hell, but I won't try to call it a great movie. Del Toro's got a great sense for scenery and atmosphere.

Burton's best, to me, is probably Big Fish or Sweeny Todd.

Yeah, I feel bad for the guy as well. I really enjoy his stuff and he's made some awesome work, but I keep hearing about projects he's involved with that hit some brick wall or go dead silent and it's a shame to hear that. Some of the other stuff he's been developing (some I've heard updates on, others that have gone quiet) includes:

At the Mountains of Madness (which is his dream project, got into production but was then shut down due to an edict of "R rating and small budget, or PG-13 and big budget" given by the studio, but is now back on after he figured out a way around the PG-13 restriction),
A new movie adaptation of The Haunted Mansion (which at the moment he's only attached as a screenwriter and producer, but has said he wants to make it like the ride in terms of "leaving part of you having fun, and part of you creeped out"),
A stop-motion adaptation of Pinocchio (one more akin to the original story and jointly produced with Gris Grimly, a children's author known for morbid materials and creepy drawings),
And a new adaptation of Frankenstein.

Worse, most or all of those have been floating for years, even before Pacific Rim. They're likely just air by now.

Pretty much. At the Mountains of Madness and The Haunted Mansion are the only ones I've heard any recent updates about and they're just at the screenplay development stages at this point.

I'm surprised Mountains is still being worked on at all. I thought he'd be done with it after Universal dropped the project.

I think the fact that it's such a dream project for him is the reason why, even after pulling the plug voluntarily when it was with Universal, he hasn't given up on it yet.

Don't forget this. Which looks pretty fucking awesome.

Oh, I've definitely not forgotten about Crimson Peak. I am very excited for it, especially how del Toro described it, which is that it'll be like one of his European films but with a Hollywood budget.

I didn't include it because it's one of his projects that actually seemed to have a smooth path on development, in comparison to his many other projects that hit some brick wall along the way.

For me, on many levels, it is The Nightmare Before Christmas.
EDIT: Ah, nevermind. Looks like it was Selick who directed. Burton just did the screenplay.

I'm glad you caught that one. Selick gets so little credit. Burton also designed the visual style, too--though it's heavily inspired by Gorey.

The next Batman film will be directed and co-written by Ben Affleck. The other writer for the project will be Geoff Johns.
On the one hand, Affleck co-writing and directing a Batman movie is a dream come true.

On the other hand, it'll be the Dark Knight Returns inspired Batman that Snyder is using.

Plus, it should be remembered that Johns had a heavy hand in the Green Lantern movie, as well. And we all know how that turned out.

The Green Lantern movie would have been fine if it would have done 2 things.

1) The costume. Why does he need a CGI mask for chrissake???? Emerald Bacon muscles, etc...

2) Cut Hector Hammond out of it completely.

Since Affleck is the director, he should be the domineering writer of the two. He's got the clout. Maybe Johns will be relegated to the David Goyer role of just coming up with the basic plot structure. If we're lucky, Affleck might write even that out.

Now if only WB could keep a good director/writer on Wonder Woman.

I would've gone the opposite route and cut Parallax out completely. Save him for another movie, keep the threat smaller and build up. Or just use a different villain altogether. Hell, recycle nearly the entire plot of Emerald Dawn.

I could see going that way. Start out with a more Earth-based villain before fully shifting to the more cosmic element where Green Lantern really excels.

Regarding this Batman announcement, I want to be excited. The idea of Affleck directing and co-writing a Batman film sounds like it could have serious potential. However, my excitement is extinguished by the path that Warner Bros. seems focused on dragging the DC films through.

The quality may depend on how much meddling WB intends to do.
