Video Game News and Miscellany

Konami's big money has been casino machines for a long time, with Kojima out the door they don't even have to think about video games anymore unless it's to plaster them on slot machines.

This isn't entirely true. They would make MORE money on a MGS title than they would for for any amount of pachinko machine sales in any amount of years, but they had no control over how much they would make and it would take them years to get that cash. Pacinko machines can be designed and built in a matter of months and Konami's investors own a lot of pachinko parlors in Japan, so they always need to rotate stock in and out. They also apparently make a lot of slot machines and stuff for Vegas too. It certainly doesn't help that the CEO has a background in them (he's a founder and they started with this stuff) and their all but confirmed Yakuza connections via their gambling parlors.

To put it simply, the investment versus return on AAA titles is coming into question right now in Japan. The founder wants to go into a more conservative direction. And considering he's the 44th richest man in Japan at 750 million dollars... well, he gets what he wants.

Didn't Ashburner predict exactly this?
I did make this claim a few times, but I think @CynicismKills did it as well, back in May.

They'll turn them into pachinko and mobile games.

And mobile pachinko games.

Yeah I was half-kidding, but Konami's been about other electronics a little longer than video games, but only by a decade or so. They thrived in the 80's thanks to arcades, but they built a strong backbone in other fields as well over the decades. Shifting away from games, if they do that, probably wouldn't hurt them much in the long run.

Looks like Blizz is going to unveil the next WoW xpac at Gamescom next week. Folks were speculating last week about this due to I think the PTR client updating to 7.0. There's been a lot of disappointment with WoD, so they're going to have to do something big to pull people back in. New classes/races and something more engaging than the Garrisons turned out to be. I'd also wager they'll need to do some big work on PvP, too, as I think the only thing people didn't seem to hate by the end was raid content (as long as you ignore the Iron Horde being a red herring badguy).

What's left to do as races?

Ogres? You'd have to redesign every door in Azeroth or make them smaller.
Naga? Sure, I'd be up for that but it doesn't make much sense from a lore standpoint.

Ogres are a bit bigger than Tauren in WoW, save for raid bosses (but they're always larger than they should be). This xpac was literally dimension/time-travel, along with the other various time-travel dungeons implemented in earlier xpacs. Lore means nothing at this point if Blizz doesn't want it to. Goblins picked a side, there's a crashed spaceship, and Thrall has evolved from a hunchback to standing upright like some kind of light-speed caveman.

The Five Nights at Freddy's movie might not turn out so bad. Apparently the director is a big fan of the source material and is trying to use as many practical effects as possible (including at least SOME animatronics). Even showed off one of the animatronics being developed.
They're already building stuff? The way film studios seem to drag their feet on adaptations, I was expecting we'd get this in 2020 long after interest died. They seem to be determined to capitalize on the games' success before then. Good on them, especially for doing animatronics work. That only makes sense.

They're building actual animatronics? So... Five Nights at Freddy's Five: The Final Night, will take place on the set of the movie studio.
It's almost certain that Foxy will end up CG (what with his running at all) but I can't think of a lot of reasons why the rest COULDN'T be done with cheap looking (but highly sophisticated) animatronics.

I dunno, Creature Shop is bonkers when it comes to making things work practically, I bet they can slap together a pretty convincing Foxy, sprint and all. They basically pioneered the idea Cawthon used for some of the animatronics in his games (robotics combined with a performer inside the suit).

So Nomura is planning things for the FF7 remake's combat. If it means some flashy fight scene shit like in Advent Children, I'm game. If I can get Cid to stab a dragon in the skull I will buy 10 copies of this game.

If it means I have to look at wispy, paper-skinned Cloud and friends I will die a little inside. He mentions not using the models or anything but who knows how much he'll pull once he starts digging.

He's almost certainly right about the models from AC: it's been ten years and they could do so much better now if they wanted. As for the gameplay, I'm expecting them to do something more like the PSP games: action oriented, but with lots of customizable options.

I think I could live with that, as long as he skips that slot system. Wasn't a huge fan of throwing RNG into the combat. I'd even be fine with faster-paced/real-time combat, maybe a Gambit system like 12 for party members and be able to swap between controlling one.

Of course, I'd be fine with plain old ATB, too, so whatever.

Materia is going to be involved. It's part of the story and too big a part of how things worked for the original to just ditch it without negative reaction.

So this still seems to be mostly rumor as Comcept and Deep Silver are being quiet about it, but Mighty No. 9 might be pushed back as far as next year.[DOUBLEPOST=1438464857,1438464670][/DOUBLEPOST]Also, any article I find saying the game's not delayed was published prior to GI's current blurb about it, so I don't know what's going on.
I hope this is false, because otherwise it means they keep delaying a finished game for the sake of DLC, and I wouldn't be shocked to see yet another Kickstarter run.

If it gets delayed, I guess that's money I can put toward the Mega Man Legacy Collection.

I mean, he's already got two other KS pages up for a Megaman Legends-ish game and an anime based on it.

The Legends game Red Ash didn't make it's funding on Kickstarter, but they found other investors and it will be made anyway. I'm glad. I fucking love Mega Man Legends.

It's almost certain the delay was because they were working on Red Ash stuff instead of getting Mighty No. 9 out the door... which is stupid because they probably would have had better support for the Red Ash KS if they had gotten Mighty No. 9 out first. I honestly feel like NO ONE knows how to run a KS at this point.

Also the Red Ash KS is still going, with 44 hours left on both the anime and the game. The game won't hit it's goals (but is getting made regardless) but the anime is within a few thousand and could make it.

I just think people put too much faith in the dude. After seeing what other "names" in gaming have done with their KS funds I'd rather put money on new companies. Shovel Knight was pure joy, and the new Shantae game is shaping up nicely. The only thing with a big name behind it that I find myself excited for is Bloodstained and thanks to all this nonsense that one's even got me skeptical now.
