I haven't run into this issue (nor even heard about it) so I wondered what could be up with your situation, then I realized you might be a console player, figured I'd check.
I got nothing against consolers except for the inability to team up.

Seems it's a thing.
One thing I haven't tested yet is whether I can wear set items with LoN, just not enough of them to actually gain any of the other set bonuses. Basically I want to know if I can wear a Krelm's bracer (or belt) without breaking the LoN bonus.

It would have to be in the cube. I'm pretty sure that it's no set pieces at all.
I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying I've never tested it to make sure.
I know the wording on the conquest was recently changed to be "no equipped set items at all" (in S4 it was only "no set bonuses") but I haven't tried the LoN set yet (mainly because I don't have enough good ancient stuff yet).

I haven't tested either. I am getting close to a firebats/pet build.
I have spent so much time on my hardcore characters that I am way behind the clan's seasonal paragon targets. I'm a good 100+ behind.

Well, I can survive TX, I need a lot of DB, I have something like 60 GR stones, and I have tomorrow off.

I'm going to try and push some rifts on my DH. If I can stay awake and keep the kitten off the keyboard, I may be in business

...turns out I'm already 3/6 towards the goal.
We'll see if I can turn in one more conquest, achieve GR70 solo, and level 3 gems to 65 before season's end.

EDIT: Oh thank goodness. I thought I had to put in 3xEACH jewel, not just 3 jewels total.

I'm still missing 6 gems to 40 which I don't see how I missed.

And I have gathered almost everything for my LoN build. Two pieces aren't ancient but they're the best I have at the moment.
Time to push and see if I can break the leaderboards.

Hate it when people open a GR and then bail when they can't finish it.
Folks higher than me open a GR65 and then bail at about 50% after they've died a half dozen times and there's plenty of beige on the timer.

I don't really have the dps I need to solo it, but I still managed to finish both times to get my toys, even though it took something like 45min in no small part because when I get down to just me and Kormac, the GR mechanics don't let me swap in my Unity ring.

I've had builds where I can destroy everything in like 5 minutes then I barely finish the rift because I need so long for the RG.

I wish you luck! I like the idea of Firebats, but I feel like it really should have a set to go with it rather than rely on various items. Legacy of Nightmares benefits greatly by being paired with Aquila Cuirass, and it would be very hard to have a mana heavy skill like Firebats work well. I'm sure Blizzard is going to do their best to convince us otherwise though.
I usually have the opposite problem. I can finish off the RG in a minute or two, but it'll take 25-30min to slog through the elites to get to him.
Belt of Transcendence + Starmetal Kukri = unending Big Bad Voodoo/Rain Dance = unending mana (if you manage it right).

@PatrThom is correct. I only run out of mana when I forget to cast Rain Dance. I can pretty much have it up non stop in big groups that I pull.
Newest incarnation. Lots more damage, resistance, and just plain overall surviveability. Fun to play and pretty bad ass, to be honest. We'll see if I have the patience to level up the gems to get each up to 70. This will probably end up pushing me to do around 75 or so by the time I am done.

I am down to only one non-ancient item in my LoN build. I just cleared a 67 in 9 minutes with it. My best with Helltooth-pets is a 73. I thought that LoN was meant to be the best ever. I'm underwhelmed at the moment after collecting all that gear.
LoN was meant to be an alternative to "Your only option if you want to go above GR 50 is that you MUST use a 6-piece set." It was never meant to be "best," just to open more options.
