Okay, so the wife and I are doing keto and eating low carb. One thing we really miss are things like muffins, etc. So I found out about CarbQuick Baking Mix. It's a low-carb Bisquick, basically. We got a box and love it. I had a 3 carb blueberry muffin this morning with my 0 carb chicken breast for breakfast. Yum! So I go to order more and here are the choices for sizes:

My question is, if you can buy multiple individual boxes, why would you do anything else? A two-pack is $4.83 a pound (the site calculates incorrectly), the three-pack is $4.77 a pound, and the five-pound box is $4.79 a pound. Yet the normal three-pound box is $4.56 a pound. Why?!? Buying in bulk is MORE expensive? Yet if I wanted to I could buy 100 units of individual three-pound boxes at the lowest price. Makes 0 sense.

Various plausible-sounding reasons:
  • The individual boxes are produced in far greater numbers, production/distribution costs are lower.
  • The bulk packs are convenient for some (or companies know some people have the "buy in bulk to save" mantra without ever breaking down the cost comparisons)
    • I usually save about 5-10% (more when sales happen) on my wet cat food by buying individual cans instead of bulk packs of the same brands.
  • The different sizes are provided by different middlemen, some with better margins/deals than others.
  • Markets are eventually efficient absent external forces. t→∞ takes a while, and there might be subsidies in play somewhere in there.

I've actually ranted about this before with "family size" cereal and the like. "$2.99ea or 2/$5.99"...why should I pay an extra penny just to buy two at the same time?

On Amazon, this is usually the reason for weird price disparities.

On a side note, even after we stopped doing Keto, my daughter in law kept asking me to make CarbQuick biscuits because we all liked them so. But I really couldn't justify the cost.

Definitely a marketing ploy. "Hey, I'm buying in bulk! It's cheaper that way!" Sam's and Costco use it to their advantage, and much of the time it can be cheaper, especially with a coupon, to buy in the smaller sizes.

I looked at low carb hot dog buns. They had good reviews, but I can't justify spending $7+ for 6 buns.

Working in a middle school library today, there's been a class in here every period since 8:30am with the screechiest, angriest teacher I've ever seen. Finally have an empty library this period, and I am basking in the glorious silence.

Yeah, normally I'd put some music on at a low volume while I work, but the kids have been so loud and uncooperative with the teacher that I'm just listening to the AC hum while I process books.[DOUBLEPOST=1476730765,1476730717][/DOUBLEPOST]Of course lunch is about to start, so I guess this was nice while it lasted.
