[Movies] The DC Cinematic Universe - The David Zazlav Dumpster Fire.

I must've missed this post earlier. This is kinda like with the DC comics, but I'm having a hard time seeing why this is a big deal for you.

Example, when we were talking about Doomsday Clock, you were mentioning all this other stuff you'd have to read in order to read Superman now, while my wife has never read a Superman comic before Rebirth and enjoyed it just fine. You're a smart guy, so you could too. Are you stuck on this completionist thing?

Because seeing Wonder Woman does not then commit you to watching other DCEU movies. You can just go in, see this movie, either like it, hate it, or meh it, and then walk away. You don't have to sit through Justice League or ... I don't even know what's happening any more after all these announcements, but you don't need to either. It can just be a movie, by itself, and be the end of it.

Unless Canadian theaters pump you full of addictive drugs that force you to keep coming back. Gas was right about the dangers of Canadian healthcare!

I've had three hours of sleep. Wee!
Eh, it's the principle of the matter for me. I don't want to support the DCEU. As for the Superman comics, it isn't just the stuff that I'd have to read that happened before. It's that him suddenly having a kid feels complete inorganic and unearned in my eyes. Plus, it doesn't take place in the same universe that I'm familiar with. He's basically a refugee from a different universe.

That's what you'd said before, that it was on principle, so I left it alone, but then you surprised me in the Comic News thread saying you wished you could read, but it was inaccessible, which wasn't the case then and is even less the case now. You can thank Jurgens for fixing that. Jon will never be organic because they didn't let that happen, but as time passes that will matter less and less, and some Action Comics issue went over Jon's new history. Jurgens wrote Convergence out of canon, so none of that refugee stuff happened anymore, just Superman Red and Blue again. The dream of the 90s is alive at DC.

As for Wonder Woman, DCEU isn't going to fail on whether or not you see one movie--if it did, I'd have to blame you for Man of Steel which started this whole mess :p. But as I've said to others about other things, there's no reason to deprive yourself of some small piece of enjoyment. Just arrrr it if you don't want to give them money, and you can always buy a ticket later if you decide it deserved it, but it makes no sense to hold it away from yourself if you might like it. That's not punishing WB or DC; that's only punishing you for having ever loved this stuff.

Except it did happen because it's not the same universe. The Justice League don't know who he is, Martha Kent is dead (wasn't pre-Flashpoint), and all that continuity with Jon is crowbarred in. As I said before, it's not that the Convergence crap never happened (even though it did), it's that they're sloppily trying to make it seem like Jon's always been there. I'd be fine with it if they could have told the stories that I've wanted to see for years. But instead, they jumped ahead, "Boom, he's got a kid. Deal with it." It's not the Superman that got me back into comics and at this point, he never will. So the only newer Superman comics I'll enjoy in the future will be out-of-continuity, self-contained stuff like All-Star Superman.

Thing is, because of how much Man of Steel and the overall DCEU left such a bad taste in my mouth, I probably wouldn't be able to enjoy it. I wouldn't be able to separate it from the rest because it will unquestionably tie in with the rest of the shit. It'd be like finding a diamond among a giant pile of triceratops manure: yeah, the diamond would be great, but I wouldn't enjoy swimming through the rest of the shit to get it, no matter how well I covered myself to avoid getting it on me.

Anyway, it doesn't matter. I don't really enjoy much new from entertainment anymore. If you want me to just shut up about it, I'll try.

You're way off on some of this, but it's not your fault. 1. You aren't actually reading this stuff, just hearing the reaction, and 2. it's messier than it needed to be. A lot has been retconned. It's not important; I got carried away on being informative, but it really doesn't matter. I'm not trying to convince you; just wanted to make sure you didn't have the wrong idea.

I wish both of the big two would do more OGNs with their heroes, or more series like Tom King's maxi-series where it's just a story. It's so rare to get a self-contained run otherwise.

You're fine. I'm trying to understand, that's all. My wife's bipolar often pushes her into having an all-or-nothing approach to things that I have to help her deal with. Over time I've kinda developed a warning system in my brain for signs that's happening. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't, but it's led me to, without thinking about it, jump in when I see others have her early warning signs, when in reality it not only has nothing to do with that, but even if it did, it's not my business to intrude on. You can talk about stuff; it's my fault for being presumptive.

Welp, I turned down an offer from a friend for two free passes to see Wonder Woman.
I had meant to post this earlier.

Your opinion is completely valid. Honestly, I think the marketing pressure that was present with Man of Steel -- if you can't accept this new version of Superman, your perspective is somehow flawed (paraphrasing) -- was completely unfair. (It was also unfair when a similar narrative was used with the Star Trek reboot.) With Superman, there is a power and depth to the classic character. If a film maker is going to radically change it, the onus should be on them to do it well.

Zack Snyder going FUCK JIMMY OLSEN was one of the reasons I went FUCK THIS MOVIE.

At least we didn't get the I Ching era Diana Prince Wonder Woman. That doesn't make for the eye candy set pieces with all the explosions and blood going out psssssssssh in slow motion.

So happy her theme is in the movie. I'd check out other score bits, but since noticing John Williams has a habit of spoiling the movie in the titles of his score tracks, I try to avoid seeing that stuff until after the movie.

Chris Stuckmann with an A-, too.

So if this movie is a massive success as expected, what wrong lesson will Warner Bros learn from it? Because they'll unquestionably learn the wrong lesson from its success.

"Hmmm, 'Guardians' had bright colors in it. And people like this one after we did the same . . .

. . . BLINDINGLY BRIGHT NEON COLORS ALL OVER THE PLACE FROM NOW ON!!!!!"

This is a pretty good thought experiment. Initial ideas aren't actually bad things.

"More period superhero films!" Well, that could lead to JSA and such, so that's not bad.
"More female superhero films!" Also, good. We need to dig deeper here.
"Patty Jenkins is our new DCEU executive producer!" So that'd be jumping the shark a little. Good director doesn't equal good producer.
"Every superhero eats ice cream!" ... wouldn't mind seeing Batman, in costume, sitting with Superman and Wonder Woman, eating ice cream. :p

Though to be honest, WB usually sees what other movies are doing and learns the wrong lesson from that. They held their ground for once after GotG2, probably because Wonder Woman was right around the corner, but I expect we'll have some ridiculous decision in July. So to follow in step with the many DCEU announcements of 2016, what wrong lesson will WB learn from Spider-man: Homecoming? :p

IIRC isn't ice cream on WW's list of favorite things after birthday cake and dinosaurs? (And does someone not on mobile have that comic somewhere?)

96% on Rotten Tomatoes right now with 54 critics checking in. I think DC might finally have a hit. And wouldn't it be funny if their first hits were Wonder Woman and Aquaman? Considering they've almost always been given a back seat to Superman and Batman, it would be hilarious.

I'm waiting for the conspiracy theories that the liberal cuck reviewers only say they like it because it stars a woman and the SJWs are forcing them to be PC.

Put them together, and you get a movie about Heavy Flo.

Heh, oh Image Comics, you so wacky. To abuse an out-of-date metaphor, when Marvel and DC are the WWF and WCW, fighting for viewership supremacy, Image is like the ECW (or maybe the Backyard Wrestling Federation), doing crazy shit and hoping to get noticed.

How can we make this match more fun? Toss a cheese grater into the ring!

Image does pretty well, often selling half as many comics per month as DC or Marvel.

Usually of way higher quality too. Image has soooooooooooooooooooooo many excellent titles.

The only Image comics characters (I had to google) I'd ever heard of were Savage Dragon and Spawn, and I only knew of Savage Dragon because people on this forum were talking about it for a while, and I only knew of spawn because of the movie.

Telling me what they sell in dead trees is like me trying to brag about radio ratings.
