The Invisibles

Or, the first two issues of it, anyway. This is actually my second time trying to read this damn comic. But it's like a constant psychedelic trip and characters going on long, nonsensical rants. I can't get into it at all and I don't understand why it's so highly praised.
YEAH-looking back its probably a one read series to me. Also to this DAY I am still pissed off the Marquis De Sade didn't do anything cool-DON'T SAY HE HAS A GIANT DESTINY IF HE AIN'T GONNA DO SHIT!

I've been intrigued if only because of the massive omnibus, but much as I love Morrison, I'm not interested in reading someone's spell. You probably know this already, but the whole thing was carefully designed to be a sigil for his spell that would usher in a new golden age or something similar, so it's less about what stories are told and more about what Morrison was trying to do.

And as anyone who's lived from year 2000 to now can tell, his spell didn't work anyway. :p

Oh it DEFINITELY didn't work, whole finale was supposed to be on a SPECIFIC date and everything, if that don't fuck up a spell I don't know WHAT will!

Also he feels the Matrix ripped his comic off quite a bit, AND...I can kinda see why? I mean King Mob KINDA looks like Morpheus, but there's still a lot different.

I'm sure he was raging over that delay. Carefully setting this up for eight years, only for a last-minute delay to blow it. I doubt The Matrix hurt anything though; The Invisibles was never exactly a huge financial success and The Matrix didn't even release until the second to last year of the run.

Did every DC release this week have a preview for Aquaman #25? Wasted pages for me, I already bought the issue, but at this rate I almost expected it to end with a preview for itself.

But on that note, terrific issue. I'm just hoping the road to revolution doesn't screw up Arthur and Mera's relationship. And by revolution, I mean the way this new girl is looking at Arthur.

Wonder Woman/Tasmanian Devil; Opposite of the Lobo one, I enjoyed the main issue but didn't care for the backup.

I'm now also confused about Super Sons continuity with Superman. Were they already planning the Metropolis move before Black Dawn? If it's after Black Dawn
Then why is Jon still jumping when he can fly?

It takes place like a week before Black Dawn. STILL confusing though.

And not EVERY comic this week had an Aquaman preview, one of them had a preview for a sequel to "The American Way ", starring the New American, a Wildstorm character whose origin was unabashedly ripped off in Adam the Blue Marvel!

Not so much for me now, thanks. I must've missed earlier that they were already moving to Metropolis before Hamilton County hijinks.

Also, Superman #25 was great. Things seemed to wrap up quickly, but there were a lot of threads to resolve and it'll probably read better in trade.

Mama Lois busting out the middle name had me dying. And that epilogue was perfect.

I've been blasting through a bunch of Image trades I picked up through a Humble Bundle. There are some solid titles in there but nothing made me want to keep reading like The Wicked and the Divine, Book 1. I really liked it and I want to know more. Plus, the art is just gorgeous. I've got Book 2 on my wish list now, but it doesn't come out until July 12th. I probably won't be reading it until December anyway.

That's deluxe book 2; the paperback book 5 just came out. The one you read was paperback books 1 and 2, so there are still three books already out that you can read.

My wife was the same. I got her the first paperback as a gift. The day after she finished, she bought 2, 3, and 4, ate through them, then pre-ordered book 5.

I'll probably keep buying them digitally.

They're out that way, too.

Book 3:

Book 4:

Book 5:

Your big book ended with #11 and this book 3 picks up with #12. The book 2 you're waiting on ends the same place as this book 4.

Yeah, I already went and updated my wish list. :)

Couple weeks ago I set out to get Grant Morrison's run of Animal Man. Volume 3 was tucked away on a back shelf of my local comic shop, which was a nice find, but Vol 1 was already disappearing from sites and Vol 2 had been unavailable for a while, so I had to buy them used. The condition they arrived in was ...

... pristine! Beautifully kept copies. They look like they've either never been read or only read once; I almost feel bad not just displaying them on a shelf. But I didn't buy them for display; I bought them to read, which I started today.

I meant to read only one issue, but I ended up going through the first story arc. This was totally worth the trouble. A lot of clever ideas with Buddy's powers, but the character development was unexpected so early in the run. The pivotal scene near the end of issue 4 has dialogue that would be preachy if not for the circumstances and the scene. It takes a lot of skill as a writer and artist team to wring emotion out of scenes with pretty ridiculous costumes, get you so wrapped up in it that you don't notice that shit anymore. Really looking forward to seeing where it all goes.

Question for DC vets: I thought only Psycho Pirate remembered the Crisis on Infinite Earths, but it gets referenced a couple times here. Is it just that people know something happened, but aren't sure what, or are there specific events they know of as the Crisis and Psycho Pirate is the only one who remembers there used to be other worlds besides this one?

People involved remember their specific roles to a degree. Everyone remembers that some cataclysmic event happened that almost destroyed the universe before the super-heroes stopped it, but not the specifics, and yeah, no one save Psycho Pirate remembers the multiverse.

...

Metal just became a lot more interesting.

Batman and Elmer Fudd

This is the greatest gritty reboot of ANYTHING and no-one can tell me otherwise.

Action Comics 682

I'ma be real here-
-I REALLY hope Super Lex doesn't turn evil again, I like him how he is and Circe can go fuck herself for all I care.

Justice League of America

Still love this series, my favorite parts have to be Lobo and Ryan's chats.

Teen Titans Rebirth 9

NOT GONNA LIE-bought this because Green Lanterns wasn't new this week and it has Aqualad and.... dear lord my feelings are still mixed. Stop talking about how Damian is a Dick and just TELL HIM HE'S A DICK! Swear to the source, these folks can NOT express their emotions properly. ALSO-the will they/won't they of Raven and Kid Flash is just as torturous as it was in New Teen Titans. All in all the series ain't bad but it sure as hell ain't no Marv Wolfman story.

Just finished reading this. Loved it. It wouldn't work so well, but it takes itself so seriously that you can't help grinning over how absurd the whole thing is. Tom King clearly had a lot of fun writing it.

I almost picked up the Jonah Hex/Yosemite Sam issue, then ended up passing on it.

Aw man, the Yosemite one wad this week? Hope it don't sell out by the time I get back to the city.

But yeah, one can't HELP but smile the moment you read the comic in Elmer's voice.

Picked up Star Wars Droids Unplugged #1 by Chris Eliopoulos and Jordie Bellaire. Three short stories about droids in the Star Wars universe, 1st story features a probe droid from Darth Maul, 2nd features R2-D2 with Luke and the 3rd is with BB-8. Cute stories, quick read, the artist does a good job telling the stories without many words.

We finally have a local shop that is getting in new comics weekly! I'll be going back for sure.

Wonder Woman #25

Greg Rucka finishes his run with some callbacks and story ends, but also leaving some things unresolved for future writers to tackle (or ignore). This is a good jumping off point when the next writer seems intent to play safe for five issues and Robinson after that isn't much interested in Wondy herself or her presence on Earth. Next writer will be for March 2018, so I'll check back in then.

Hal and Pals #23
I love this series so much. There is so much going on at once right now, and I could see a book that's juggling three plots feeling like nothing happened that issue, but everything's weaving together. I'm only bummed that

Kyle and Sora probably aren't getting together. Although Kyle is kinda being a jerk.

It's like, when Kilowog gives romance advice, you take it!

Decided to read the couple issues of The Defenders.

I don't know how to feel. On the one hand, it's pretty fun, with some cool moments and interactions, and a couple surprising cameos (albeit narratively convenient). Doesn't seem like Secret Empire is a thing, as far as this is concerned. I like that Ben Urich delivers the "last time in this series and maybe a couple others" bit at the beginning; that was fun.

On the other hand, there's a lot of clunkiness to it. Nothing's really wrong with the dialogue itself, so it's at least better than the Bendis I've experienced there, but the way it's done, how it's set between bubbles/panels, can get really awkward. I'm not really sure how to consider the couple of issues on the whole--I'd definitely rank them more positively than negatively. I think part of my distance with it is that there's no grandiosity to it, which I'm used to having in my comics, be it recent stuff like Tom King's Batman, or going back to The Sandman. That shouldn't be a necessity though and there's really no reason for it to be that way in The Defenders--one of it's strengths is how ground level it is. So that's just a personal dissonance.

Superman 26

Good father son bonding issue... but MAN did Jon and young Clark's faces look weird, I am not sold on this artist.

Batman 26

Yeah yeah, brilliant war story of a hero reflecting on his darkest point in life-LETS GET TO KITEMAN!

Green Lanterns 26

Liked it as always, but after the ending of last week's comic I'd honestly prefer more continuation.

Bane Conquest 3

Modok, what are you doing here?

My wife was avoiding Batman/Elmer Fudd--no idea why. Finally got her to pick it up, and now she can't stop giggling from the other side of the room.

Oh my god, DC, stop placing these Snickers ads in places they could conceivably be happening in the comic. It's confusing![DOUBLEPOST=1499340580,1499340245][/DOUBLEPOST]

I feel like this issue skipped a scene. Jon gets punched and ... lesson learned?

Fortunately both writer and artist were just fill-in for this week and we'll be back on track for #27 with Tomasi.

Deadpool vs. The Punisher
Deadpool vs. Carnage

Deadpool vs The Punisher was good. Deadpool vs. Carnage was not. The latter had that whole "trying too hard" vibe.

Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe
Meh. A lot of the good fights were off-screen, and a lot of the deaths of heroes were methods that canonically won't work or that have been tried many times before. Although, this is somewhat addressed by the big "reveal".

Batman 26

Before I read the issue I thought you were being overly antsy, but yeah, after the killer part 1, part 2 felt like an in between issue since not a lot actually happens. Which is weird because next issue is going to be Kite Man's hellacious origin story, which would seem to be the real in between.

I'm concerned that WOJAR isn't going to be much of a story and more of a cliff's notes of events during a point where Batman was young and too inexperienced for the level of mayhem that a villain civil war brought to Gotham, and is disappointed in his own powerlessness. I hope I'm wrong, because I've been looking forward to this since it was announced.

Justice League #24 was beautiful. This is kinda the last month we're getting two Aquaman books, and only because Dan Abnett focused his guest writer Justice League issue on Mera. And it was great. Mera kicking JL's asses? Awesome. Mera having friendly and supportive conversation with JL? Awesome. Just one awesome package.

I legitimately thought Superman had to zoom over to Central City to help Flash with Gorilla Grodd but NOPE-Snickers. Those bright purple Preacher ads on the backs are less of an eyesore.

And thank GOODNESS, felt SO off.

Yeah it was pretty much more set-up to the big war, and a lot of the imagery was the same too. Still liked it, but I'm betting Kiteman's solo issue is going to be more of a highlight.

Still reding the IDW Transformers books, and they're still good. Til All are One just got canceled, which is a shame, since it really was good.

Quick update on the status of the major books, well into the post-war era:

The Lost Light: Rodimus's mistakes as captain came back to haunt him, as a mutiny left him and his core supporters abandoned on the Necroworld. (graveyard planet) The group barely survives an assault by the Decepticon Justice Division - don't laugh at the name - these guys were frikkin' monsters. There was an alternate dimension story, and now Megatron is trapped there, where he became a hero.

Optimus Prime: To protect Earth from Galvatron's invasion, (Megatron and Galvatron are seperate characters here.) Optimus annexes Earth into the new Cybertronian a Council of Worlds. Earth doesn't want that, since Megatron and his army wiped out over a billion humans during All Hail Megatron. Prime breaks his code of honor and executes Galvatron after the tyrant surrenders. His followers, including a cadre of religious fanatics who worship the Primes, start to doubt him after that. One, the leader of the Victorian combiner team, might be plotting to usurp Prime. A nearly disastrous first encounter with the Junkions and their Sharkticons didn't help.

Til All are One: Starscream is still in charge of Cybertron, and does whatever necessary to stay there. He's also mentally unstable, as he constantly sees and talks with Bumblebee, who has been dead for quite some time now. There's a lot of politics in this one, where actions really feel like they have consequences. There was a great Bruticus story, and Sentinel Prime, who is never not a dick in any version of TF lore, attempted to use a reanimated Titan force (Metroplex's kin) to take over Cybertron and purge any bot he deemed impure.

I was afraid when IDW united their titles under the same universe - TFs, GIJoe, MASK, and ROM - the books would suck. Fortunately, they've shown appropriate restraint. Really, only GIJoe, which is basically a global response team to deal with the Cybertronians, only shows up in Optimus Prime. It's done in a way that makes sense.

I got hardcover deluxes of Ms. Marvel for $5 each recently and just finished re-reading the first couple story arcs.

Mostly I'm glad I re-read this because it's still wonderful. That said, there's a tiny part of me that wishes I hadn't, because I forgot just how charming this comic used to be. It's not like it's bad or anything now. But it's more workmanlike, almost like the Secret Wars arc made her aware just how little control she has over Kamala's activities. Like, usually a character's solo comic is at the head and any books where the character shows up kinda have to follow its lead, not rock the boat, etc? Well compared to the older stuff, it feels like Kamala's solo title is the one that has to tiptoe now, not change the character's status quo, just fiddle with the supporting cast, because the solo title isn't at the head; it's the editorial mandates.

And I don't know if that's something on the side of the editors or the writer, or if it has to do with Ms. Marvel having the lowest monthly sales of any book that Kamala Khan appears in because it never really recovered from the post-Secret Wars time jump. Regardless of the reason, that really sucks. Because now I'm comparing what was and what is, and feel a lot less like reading the issue coming out this Wednesday.

Having caught up on Thor: God of Thunder, the Original Sin tie-in about Angela, and then Thor (which I'm glad didn't bother acknowledging Secret Wars, even though I love Secret Wars), and now into Mighty Thor.

This is so damn good. And its being good highlights how there are many ways for a comic book to be good. I was starting a read of Alan Moore's Swamp Thing yesterday, and its drama and psychosis are so interesting ... and that's after Ms. Marvel's being so optimistic and charming. Then Grant Morrison can somehow uncomfortably dark and then delightfully bizarre without any sense of tonal schizophrenia. And then Bendis's Defenders right now is kinda trashy, but likable.

Jason Aaron's run of Thor embraces its ideals of being an epic. There are epics in comics, but then Thor loves being an epic. To contrast, I enjoy Hickman's Avengers stuff that leads up to Time Runs Out and Secret Wars, but there are times where it feels like he got bored with what he was doing, or was killing months here and there, to the point that you could skip many chapters and get to the point here and there.

Thor never feels like that. It's been building to this War of Realms for a long damn time, and yet each issue feels like it wants you to read it. And I haven't read either of these month-by-month, it's all been in binge chunks. Each step of the way feels like part of the chain, and even if the big thing hasn't happened yet, the stuff leading the way is part of the grand story, as if every piece of it is considered grandiose and important. Doesn't matter whether or not it actually is--just that it handles itself that way. That's one of the things I love about the 1982 Conan the Barbarian; it acts like it's telling the greatest story ever told. Doesn't matter if it actually is; that it acts that way is part of what makes it work.

Still got more to go through in Mighty Thor, but I'm hoping to be caught up soon so I can start picking it up monthly.

Oh, and Thor: The Dark World completely wasted Malekith. They might as well have had Thor vs Evil Space Robot for all it mattered.

Action Comics

Is it kinda fucked that-
-Lex friggin LUTHOR is here by Kal-El's side....but NO sign of Kon-El?
