Great marketing or greatest marketing?

My partner and I were coming home from a trip and stopped at a GetGo gas station. That's where we found this:

We had a brief discussion about it, and I need validation. What's your instant reaction to this?

There are no wrong answers unless it's not the one I had.

Y'know, given everything that's been going on in the US recently, I'd like to smash that entire package, and all of the other ones, with a steam roller, because we don't need any all-white things that used to be made up of all the colors of the rainbow.

to be fair they have done this for something like 5 years, every time its pride month. I know, HAIL CORPORATE, but meh, to me the grey skittles is a nice touch.

Ding ding ding!

While I would be less annoyed had it been any other year, you have to be able to read the room.

Though my second thought was what a handful of those would look like, and immediately realized they did not think this through on many levels.

I mean, pride is in June so that was done before the unrest.
It was printed before then (I wouldn't be surprised if they'd been printed sometime in 2010), but the unrest started May 26th, in Minneapolis and spread most of the rest of the country by the next day. Also, it's August. That gives candy reps plenty of time to get their asses back out there and snag those and replace them with regular rainbow Skittles. And this frustration is directed at them - Skittles and their vendors - not you.

It's kinda clever, but ultimately its the same as every other corporation slapping a rainbow on their packaging and pretending they're an LGBT ally for 30 days.

Or loudly supporting BLM for a week or two while it's the new shiny, and then going right back to giving money to Kelly Loeffler's campaign.

protips, they ship candy, on average, 90 days before promo period, this, if fresh, was probably being produced as covid was taking off. Given everything that happened this year, it wouldnt surprise me if they just figured "fuck it". My work is currently stocking Halloween candy, its fucking august.
