Bad Service? Annoying customer too...

Just a thought before I head to bed... something I witnessed today.

So there is a Community Coffee House right in our school's library. Today there was this new girl with an attitude. She took my order but never gave it to the people who made the stuff (I waited about 20 minutes for a plain coffee and a premade bagel sandwich...). And she wasn't offering people their receipts (seems like you always should).

I didn't care; I didn't need mine. But this one guy asked for his before moving to the bar to wait for his drink.

"You want a receipt... for a cash purchase?" She asked. He nodded and waited there, and she didn't go to reprint it. She just started taking another person's order. He then complained to the manager just like this:

"Hey, uh, this girl won't give me my receipt. I've really been trying to keep a record of what I spend every week and... you know what? Never mind."

And the lady (the manager it turns out) says "No, it'll only take a second, we'll do it for you."

He has this incredibly hurt look on his face... "No, no... I understand if you don't want to... it's just... I really did want one... but no, that's ok... I don't want to make trouble.... but I really would like it for my records... oh, no, no thanks..."

Finally, AFTER the manager printed it out for him and extended it towards him (apologizing for the girl, too) he walked off. All the while the girl is muttering, "Like you need a receipt for a cash purchase..." The manager gives her dagger eyes and I walk away because she's scary.

So, I instantly don't like that new employee... not because she made mistakes, but because her attitude was terrible. She could bitch all she wanted after the guy left, but she was really rude to his face. But the customer annoyed me too. Sure, the girl was rude to him, but the manager tried to make it right, and he started acting like a damn martyr. I wish I could describe it properly... he just kept on going on and on about how much he wanted a receipt and then wouldn't accept it after all that... for whatever dumb reason.

Tl; dr version: Cashier refuses to do simple thing; customer overreacts to simple thing. I mean, if he REALLY didn't want to "trouble them" any more he could have just looked up at the menu, made a note of the drink's price, added the tax, and put that in his record.

Anyway... that was the funny thing that happened near me today. How about y'all?

I don't drink coffee, but I would love to just go and hang out there to watch the oncoming train wreck that'll happen when she mouths off to the wrong person, or for the 'last straw' that a manager / co-worker cares to handle.

Ugh... I hate it when businesses hire people for reasons of 'obligation', which can stem from relationships, family, to the whole 'racial equality' thing.

I went to a local steakhouse for my birthday a few years back and the waitress was obviously the daughter of the owner's girlfriend, or something like that as she rolled her eyes, sighed boredly, and scowled the whole time she serviced us, clearly not wanting to be there with a vengeance. As such our orders were wrong, but I insisted we not do anything about it as what we did get worked well enough, though the steak I had was one of the worst I've ever eaten.

And yes, I do wonder where these bad attitudes come from.

And you know, although the manager tried to handle it well, she doesn't really lead by example. She's not friendly, she looks at you like an idiot if you order something they're out of, and then she turns around and chastises this girl for doing something she might have done if no one was watching.

And yeah, Kev, coffee places are.... complicated. I used to drink just frozen stuff... training wheels I guess.... a long time ago. Now I prefer plain black coffee with a splenda. It's just easier. They pour it, they hand it to you, and you're done. Then there's the barista attitude you get sometimes. It used to be that was just a starbucks thing over here... then it leaked over into my precious local coffee chain.

This is why I don't go to Community much anymore, though. Highland (the place where they roast their own beans everyday ) is muuuuuch better. The people are friendly and helpful. Plus my brother works there so they know me. ^_^

I can't believe I'm only 23 and complaining about the work ethic of the younger generation.

That was fast.

Digital age, etc.

I notice it too. I'm still trying to whip one of my little cousins into shape. I know we were probably all dicks to our parents when they didn't deserve it, but she can be downright bitchy. Plus she's spoiled, but that's partially my timid aunt's fault. When she goes over the texting limit, she doesn't take the phone away. When she's rude and disrespectful, she lets her go out anyway. It's a mess.

Plus, she has really weird ideas that I don't understand. A couple years back she asked me, "You're 23?! *scoff* And you're not married?!" Then she laughed at me.

But then I was kind of a jerk when I was that age too... I think it just gets less clear when I get older. Still, I never mocked my older relatives for being legally single. What the hell is that about?! Where'd she pick that up?

Every time I get fast food (admittedly not often) and get piss poor lazy service I take comfort in knowing that one day that persons job will be lost to a machine.

The lack of work ethic that you find in the workforce today seems to be growing.

If I get bad service I'll just not go back to a place. However, my wife won't tolerate bad service at all. It can be a little embarrassing at times. Mistakes she can tolerate, but if she gets attitude she'll rip them a new one (after the food/beverages are safely out of their reach, of course).

Sounds like my mother. We'll be out and if someone is rude she'll gladly ask, "I'm sorry, am I annoying you by asking you to do your job??? We all work, you know.."

Huh. That's strange... I guess I've been lucky since I can't recall a single incident of bad service, and I do frequent pubs and hamburger joints.

Guess I've just been lucky... or I suck at empathy.

Man. I wanna go to Finland. It would be nice to not feel like I'm asking someone to pull their own teeth out when I order food.

I have a couch that folds open into a bed :D[/QUOTE]

In all honesty, I think it would be fun to meet you. You seem like a fun-loving, good-hearted chap. If I go to Finland before I go to Canada, Gusto will cry.

Hahaha, Seej, you'd better add one more to your list of Halforumers to visit someday.

...

And yes I absolutely will cry.
