XBox Dead

My xbox died this past weekend and I shipped it back today... GG Red Ring of death. So, how many of you have enjoyed this experience?

Was it the new chip version or ?

I'm planning on getting a new Xbox360 soon with that new chip, can't remember the name of it. Wondering how long it's gonna live.

I'm going to run around the building and knock on every piece of wood I can find after saying this but:

I've still got my launch system.

*runs around looking for wood.*

*wait...no...what?*

I bought my 360 elite pro in 2007, so i assume it had the old chipset. i hope they send me a new one with the new chipset

It’s sad that they had such issues with their 360... To a lot of gamers, having their console bork like this, easily removes their interest in next-gens of the company. I got 4 friends who all got the same issue as me, and once they got their refurb, they sold it off on ebay/game stores and switched to P3 or Wiis. They rent the console for specific games they want to play when available and return it. They have no interest in having an xbox 360. These guys are mostly hardcore gamers who still have every damn console system and in a blink in an eye will break out their dreamcast and find ourselves playing an old game for hours. Their opinion is, “If I got a SNES for over 15 years and it still works perfectly fine, why can’t the Xbox last its own damn warranty?”

I found it hard to argue that point. Now more than ever. I mean, how will it suck for someone to get this well-known issue 3 years and 1 month after purchase?

Well my X-box isn't "dead" but I can't trust it with any of my games because the disc drive keeps on scratching up my discs and I can't get it out without actually prying the thing open.

I'm debating whether I should buy a used system and just plug my harddrive into that, send this one in to get fixed or just bite the bullet and get an elite and then transfer everything over.

Mine's dead and outside of the 3 year warranty so they want hundreds of dollars to fix it. So I gave all my games and shit to my brother. Fuck X-Box.

The one and only reason I'm interested in an Xbox is the online gaming. I know PS3 has one as well, but the "Live" is just a more fleshed out and generally accepted system.

The more chumps I have to shoryuken or put a bullet between the eyes, the better.

PS3 has a waaaaaaaaay better SSF2THDR and SF4 crowd than X-Box though, easily. Everything else is totally more Xbox centric.

I had to send my 360 in once before due to a Disk Drive issue but it was under warranty. Now my system is having problems again but stupid Microsoft won't do a free repair since it's the warranty has expired. The stupid part is that the problem I am having is caused by overheating of the x-clamp just like the RROD nut instead of getting the RROD you get no video.

Any official numbers? That'd be fantastic as I'd rather buy a PS3 anyway.
The things I'm looking forward most to, playing online, are FPS, SF4, BlazBlue, KoF and MvC2.

They only asked for $99 to fix my launch unit that got its first red ring after 3.5 years.

No official numbers. Just from what I've noticed. I can win 99% of the time when playing SF4 on my buddy's Xbox and the number goes way down when I play on PS3. Also, the people on PS3 tend to be much less shitface assholish than the Xboxers.

Nothing official, just what I have noticed playing it.

Also, Klew, I'm Canadian, so they want more money from me. More money they will not get. I am one of those low ass 10% of people that will not fucking buy another one.

5 times. Replaced and/or repaired 4 times. The last one I was out of warranty, so I haven't replaced or gotten it fixed yet.

I have the worst luck with technology.

And it's stories like this that confirm why I'll be getting a PS3 instead of a 360. Sorry to hear about that, man. =/

It's terrible is it not?

Let me tell you something, next-gen... no xbox for me regardless of what they produce. I cannot forgive a company sucking this bad on a CONSOLE. I still play my old NES, SNES, Genesis, PS 1 and PS 2 and they NEVER had a problem (sure i broke a few controllers but....). I don't understand why they didn't mass recall them back, they provided a borked unit from the launch that wasn't fully tested. Sure, repairs may by free and sure the UPS may be free but you're still charged for the wrapping, you're still charged from the downtime and you still lose patience.

They knew they were releasing a failure ridden wreck to the market, the higher ups just didn't care. And look, they have won the hardcore market and then some with this shit. People flock to the 360 and buy new ones when they break (back-ups) while waiting on the return of the old one. It's our fault as much as Microsoft's that they completely got away with this.

I love my PS3. It has Uncharted and it works...and has built in WiFi and is a bluray player.

See, I want PS3 for Blu-Ray, but I don't have a 1080p 120hz TV yet so I'm in no rush. Xbox360 has alot of online competitive fighting games, which is my biggest draw.

So I'm kind of at a loss, most of the games that come out on Xbox I'd rather play on my PC and usuall do though.

People love the 360 because it's a better system. Granted, the PS3 is more powerful, but most of the games that I've purchased that were cross platform had some issue or another on the PS3 that wasn't on the 360 version. Also, I personally have found that the 360's interface to be easier to navigate/use, and that's even counting the crappy new xbox wiixperience. Couple that with xbox having exclusives that I enjoyed (mass effect, fable 2, gears of war, crackdown) verus the PS3 exclusives I played (Lair, eye of judgment, metal gear cutscene, little big planet, resistance, infamous) never generated enough enjoyment to see them through - except infamous - which was an excercise in masochism at that point. It started off so awesome, and I just kept playing through all the poor design choices hoping it would return to its former glory. It didn't.

Which is not to say that I didn't enjoy them to some extent. Little big planet an infamous both had a first hour of gameplay that was an absolute delight, but somewhere between the 1 and 2 hour mark, LBP became a repeatfest and Infamous became masochism on a blu-ray disc. I'll also admit that I enjoyed watching metal gear cutscene online, but couldn't stomach the actual game when and if it poked it's head out of the cutscene. The disjointed gameplay to cutscene ratio was just to jarring - OK I'm ready to play, take 5 steps, codec call, take 5 steps, cutscene.

I know alot of times I might sound like a rabid 360 fanboy, but I can't stress enough that having sunk alot of cash into the PS3 that I tried and tried to like it, but could not.

EDIT: Just totalled up the cash I spent on the PS3 and peripherals...Right around $950...before tax. WOW.

That's another thing that annoyed me with the XBox. It's the only one of the 3 that don't have Wifi ability by default, WTF. I hated dragging my 30 foot long RJ-45 across the damn living room everytime I wanted to go online... and NO, I'm not paying 50$ to be able to use Wifi. I find it sad that a system like the Wii that has HALF it's cost, has more functionality than a system catered to the hardcore gamer base.

50 bucks? The fucking things are still generally full price 100 bucks in most places.

It's ridiculous.

So here's a question to you:
If someone has a powerful gaming PC. What reason would there be to buy an Xbox over a PS3?

Fable 2 apparently.

Though I do find it funny that in PS3 exclusives he lists Eye of Judgement and Lair but not the actual good games like the Ratchet and Clank series (easily one of the most fun platformers in existence), God of War and Uncharted.

Exclusive console-only games.
Exclusive console-only content.
Easier to play social games such as Seen-It. *hangs head in shame*

I found my old gameboy color today. It's like, 12 years old. I popped in new batteries and started to play Harvest Moon.

Then it struck me: I have never had an iPod last longer than 3 years. My computers always meet with some calamity (although, to be honest, the last two calamities have been a glass of milk and a drop from my dining room counter onto hardwood floor). The only reason my Wii hasn't broken is probably because I haven't had a TV to use it on for the last 8 months.

I realize that the newer stuff is more sophisticated, but I wonder what the world would look like with less planned obsolescence.

In the end, a game system's a game system. It's not like one has leaps and bounds over the other.

If you're not in for 360/ps3 exclusives, the best reason to get an xbox over ps3 is the games which are only released for consoles, and said titles usually being better on the xbox, as well as no install times when going to play a game.

On the other hand, PS3 has a blueray player, wifi and free net play, but the net play's not the best in some games, and in others the population's not high enough to warrant an attempt.

I know the blu-ray player carries alot of weight with some people, but the majority of the time I owned a PS3, I didn't have an HDTV, and when I finally got one, I couldn't bring my self to pay extra for higher quality, and just bought a DVD.

With the exception of Metal Gear, I listed games that I actually purchased because they looked interesting. Ratchet and clank never kept my attention on the PS2, so I didn't bother with it. Uncharted I did hear good things about, but never played. God of War isn't out, so I couldn't play it (the previews do look good, though.) Is it possible that I only played every shitty exclusive? yes.

Unfortunatley, as it stands, the only PS3 exclusive that I'd say is a must buy is Pain.

I'm really coming across as a Sony zealot in this thread which isn't really what I am. I'm just angry about the failure rate of 360s in general. Angrier still about what happened with mine. I knew it was ready to go kaput so I avoided playing it much. Finally when it did I found out I was a month over the 3 year mark. Had I actually used it as much as I normally would have I probably would have gotten a free replacement. This fucking infuriates me.

That's kind of my point. Usually an Xbox "exclusive" can be bought and played on PC. Where as PS3 exclusives are just that.

In its defense, it was the first, and there was no precedent for a console with built in wifi. as for a wii being half the price of a 360, where did you get a $100 wii?

It's not as often as you think, and usually way later to boot. I wish that were the case though. I'd have never drifted from PC gaming if it was that way.

Edit: Now that I think of it, the only 360 exclusive I can think of that has seen a PC release was the original Gears of war, with CliffyB stating that we wouldn't see part 2 on PC.

That's right! I totally forgot about that one. I even went down a list of games I own and never came to it :)

We need a non-Wii next gen for games like Brutal Legend, Final Fantasy XIII, Resident Evil 5.

PS3 will be the console of choice due to God of War 3.

Back on topic

May 2008 I bought an Elite w/ the new Falcon chipset - it lasted 10 days before the RRoD. I was so pissed when I was filling out the service request online that I forgot to put my Apt # in the address. That delayed getting my coffin by 2 days. I work right next door to the UPS facility in town, so I dropped it off on the way to work. Then when they returned it I had the same problem with the address, so a couple more days there - the whole thing took about 14 days total.

One month later, the 2nd box started freezing in games and having trouble loading anything. Sometimes it wouldn't even get past the 360 logo. Another call to talk to "Bob" and another vacation in TX for my xbox. Hurricane Dolly kept it on a trailer for a few extra days before the service center received it. Total downtime on 2nd box - 17 days.

So, out of the first 3 months I owned my 360, it was in TX being repaired for 1 month. My compensation for my troubles... a lousy 2 free months of XBL which, as I stated before... I lost 1. I tried to squeeze them for something for my troubles, but they've already had too many people work them over & I guess I wasn't belligerent enough.

All in all, between myself and about 4 friends we have had 13 RRoD's, with one friend having 5!!

They're getting better - but they still have too high a defect rate.

That's because they aren't willing to redesign it to include a more powerful cooling solution. They seem to think it's cheaper just to fix them until your warranty voids.

In somewhat related news to this thread, I just bought a ps3slim, to accompany my gaming PC and wii. I feel satisfied in this purchase, because I'm getting it for blu-ray and the exclusives (God of War and The Last Guardian, mostly). The other games are just a bonus.

Best part? I spent $280 on the console after tax and shipping*. Woohoo!

*downside to cheap shipping, it's going to take two weeks to get here
