Les Miserables

I freaking love the soundtrack for the musical. I saw it on Broadway years ago. Was good, but I think to young to fully appreciate it then. Love the movie with Liam Neeson.

Should probably read the book at somepoint.

I read Les Miserables in the original french for extra credit in my french class in high school. it was good, but it's hard to keep the flow of a story when every other paragraph you have to stop to look up a word you've never seen before.

I love the musical, haven't seen the movie yet.

I can also run through the entire musical in my head.

I actually fell in love with Les Miserables when I saw the 10th anniversary performance on TV, the one at the Royal Albert Hall. I then saw it a few times in the theater, both in New York and in London. Discovered something new about it every time I saw it.

I also had a childhood ambition to play Javert on stage some day.

A buddy of mine went to Japan a few weeks ago, and while there, he got me the CD of the Japanese Les Miserables cast. Jean Valjean is played by Takeshi "Chairman" Kaga, of Iron Chef fame. It's kinda amazing!

I have in my music collection songs from about sixty musicals, Les Miserables is easily my second favorite.

I fell in love with Les Mis when I was about 8 or 9. I grew up with musicals, and my sister's marching band did the score one competition year so I heard it every weekend for a few months. :)

One Day More has been in nearly every season of the WVU Marching band since 1987. Only way I can ever escape it is to move to the West Coast.

They should've let them finish the Confrontation in that video! They were getting to the best parts!

And huh, I'm not too familiar with Assassins myself.

:D
It's by Stephen Sondheim and it's amazing. There are some ok videos on youtube but the quality is shit (of the video not the performers)

Oh uh, I've... I've never liked Sondheim. :whistling:

I find his musicals tend to be great stories, but I don't like the music.

I like it far more than the others. I don't have much to compare it to but it's much better musically than Gypsy and Into the Woods.

Mom knows I'm an atheist and she'd have been the first person I'd have come out to, were that applicable. However, I've had to keep my dislike of Sondheim in the closet for years. She's a Broadway company manager (did a stint on Les Miz, speaking of) and she and her friends more or less live theatre, especially musical theatre.

But yeah, as much as I've tried, I'm not a Sondheim fan. Objectively I think he's brilliant and his writing is excellent. It just grates on me. Give me Kander & Ebb, or Rodgers & Hammerstein, or Bock & Harnick instead.

Oh, also, they did a "staged reading" of Les Miz at the Hollywood Bowl last season, with Brian Stokes Mitchell and some other fantastic actors. Even though my mother hates the show she came out to see the performance. "Jan" from The Office played Fantine and holy hell does that woman have a gorgeous voice.

This doesn't surprise me. She really is the perfect woman.

/sigh.
