You learn that you erased a portion of your memory years ago. It wasn't insignificant either - whole months are missing over a period of a few years.

You find that you did this voluntarily, paid for it, even.

You now find a way to re-gain that information.

Do you trust your younger self, and ignore it
or
Do you get back what you lost

Depends on whether I'm happy or not. If I'm happy I am going to leave well enough alone; no sense in endangering my current happiness with knowledge of something obviously bad. If I'm unhappy, I might take the chance that it won't make me any more unhappy with the possibility of understanding why I'm unhappy.

Assume you found this out today - as you are right now.

well.... I consider myself to be a logical person. If I PAID someone to do something to me, then it must be for a good reason. I wouldn't want to try to regain my memories. I'm very stingy with my money when it comes to spending on myself, so I wouldn't want to waste what money I spend it on.

Of course THAT could be a lie given to me when someone else erase my memory without my permission............ then if that is the case I would want it back.

How can you prove you paid for it? people can fake evidence.

I think I would get the memories back because I would be constantly tormented by the wondering. Besides worse case scenario I could always re-wipe the memories.

I'd type a response, but I can't improve on this. Kudos, Miss. Kudos.

EDIT after reading stienman's post: In that case I'll leave well enough alone.

Ask Hollywood. They use this plot at least once a year. Usually the main character turns out to have some fighting skills they forgot about. Probably because every writer secretly wishes they'd find out they were really a kickass ninja, only they forgot about it.

I was going to say essentially this.

See: Total Recall, Bourne Trilogy, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, etc.

I know better than to trust myself with ANYTHING. Growing up a pyro and having undeniable destructive tendencies will do that you.

I would absolutely get it back. I would never be able to let go knowing the fact that I PAID to have memory erased and I have no idea what it was!

My memories are muddy from the drink, not no fancy shmancy psychic surgery. But if more drink will get me my memories back, I'll drink until I remember.

*drinks until he remembers*

*drinks to forget*

If it meant that I could regain my memory of Spiderman 3, the new Star Wars movies and Transformers 2 then by all means give me back my memories.

I don't trust my younger self. Or my older self. Or my current self. Or myself from a parallel universe.

I think you get the idea.

You seem to be saying that I learned I did it of my own free will. If that's the case, it would depend who gave me this information or however else I came about it.

If someone in my immediate family or one of my best friends told me that I did, I'd be more likely not to. Any other way besides a detailed note from my past self, and I would definitely try to get the memories back. I know myself. I'm a curious person, and when the truth is hidden from me I literally cannot do anything else until I've uncovered it.

Completely erasing big chunks of my life for any reason just doesn't fit into my philosophy, I guess. I can't imagine living a happy life knowing that I left memories behind--some of which might be good, some of which might be lessons, etc. Memories are too important.

I'd liken that to willing away my ability to feel pain. I can't imagine a long-term scenario in which it makes sense.

My younger self is an arrogant, pompous idiot. I'd get them back just to spite him.

Suck it younger self.
You're future self just came to visit me, and as he left he told me to tell you to shut up, you have no idea what you're talking about. Then he dismissively said, "As if he'd listen to me."

Sounds like you've got a beef with your past and future. Here's to the present!

By the way, if you stop believing the combover is a solution now, you'll be much better off when you come and visit me awhile from now.

Just sayin'

My younger self is more responsible than my older self. Soooo, gotta go with him on this one.

Self fulfilling prophecy then. Drink to kill brain cells and eliminate memories, also reduces responsibility so by definition your younger self was/is/will always be smarter than you...

I would get them back. Because I actually don't remember my past! (Long story short, I have too little memories before the age of 15. Freaking Prozac!)

Interesting question because it makes you consider what you have forgotten in your life and why.

My view has always been that you forget things due to lack of reflection. The mind remembers because you remember if that makes sense. If you think back to your childhood a lot, to certain parts of it, it's unlikely you'll ever forget those parts. If you, however, have a part of your childhood which you'd rather not think about, you're likely to forget unless you subconsciously think back to it.

Another aspect, is that the stronger an emotion at the time was, the more likely you're to remember it even if you don't actively maintain the memory. A friend's death, moving homes, an accident, some great movie you saw on TV, etc.

But, of course, the huge majority of things we forget are the casual memories: going to school, homework, etc.

Anyway, to the question: I don't think I have forgotten that many vital parts in my life. A *lot* has happened in my childhood years which I wish I could have forgotten but I can't and as a teenagers, I had to carry the burden of those memories with me. In fact, I wish I could remember more of my earlier childhood - when I was 5-7 years old, just before the whole mess started. A lot of my memories from back then got murky due to the events of the years that followed. Thank god I still have lots of photographs and slides from those earlier years to refresh my memory or to even rebuild it (a memory is rarely completely gone).

Maybe it's just me but there are quite a few years when I was growing up that are all a blur. Now if someone mentions something i may recall that event when they mention it but for some parts it is just a blur of memories. Of course some of those years where not fun and maybe I have purposefully made the memories a blur. I still remember the major events but for awhile there where days where a lot of them all where basically the same and there where events in my life that happened beyond my control that I hated. The weird thing is I usually have a great memory and can remember in great detail things that have happened but there are some parts of my life that seem blurry. I remember all the important and memorable events but there are days and even moths that are all just blurry in details. But than again does anyone remember their childhood perfectly or do we all remember in a blur?

knowing myself and all the stupid shit i've done, i'd keep it erased. i already have enough things to feel guilty over as it is.
