I'm kind of embarrassed to do this but I would love your help if you are so inclined.

Sandy Banks wrote a great editorial in the L.A. Times about the city attorney's proposed changes to the current medical marijuana laws. The changes are draconian and would have a deeply negative effect on dispensaries that have been operating legally for years, not to mention patients who are not in a position to grow their own meds. It's especially depressing since I and many other patients voted for Trutanich believing that he was on our side.

(I realize this sort of belongs in politics but for me it is a health issue, and I also wanted as many eyes on it as possible. Again, I'm sorry to push this on you. If the responses could remain civil, I would personally appreciate it.)

I won't pretend to know anything about the laws surrounding medical marijuana but as I understand it's for people in extreme pain. Why would you make people in pain take the time to cultivate and grow their own plants. And wouldn't this actually cause more easy access to marijuana for those less scrupulous of its users?

I think it was trying to stop just anyone from just getting a prescription and getting it?

I dunno it seems silly, aren't these shops sales taxed and if so won't that cause more lost of money? Which California in general is already in the hole?

It seems like this guy doesn't know how to address problems (if there is one in the wrong people getting prescriptions).

Yes, dispensaries that follow the law do collect tax. Either they add it on at the sale point, or they fold the extra cost into the price of the meds so patients don't realize they are paying tax.

I get the idea, it's "medical marijuana is broken and a total revamp is the only way to fix it." Not the worst notion by any means, but the proposals are asinine. They won't even grandfather in co-ops that have been operating legally for years, like the one I go to which is an absolute model of a law-abiding, activist, compassionate dispensary. When places like that are under the gun, there is something seriously wrong with these proposals.

Or people who can't grow because of where they live, or can't afford the indoor equipment, etc. etc.

It's hard enough getting the dosage right from places that really know what they're doing.

Illegal drugs have significantly greater variance, potency, etc, and may be worse due to the pesticides, fertilizers, etc used making them a crap-shoot at best, and life threatening at worst.
