This is retarded.

Politics aside the man hasn't done anything to deserve winning the Nobel Peace prize!
Besides decreasing tensions with Russia over the missile shield, holding the first direct talks with Iran since '79, sent Clinton to return the two journalists from North Korea, and just generally putting out feelers that the US is willing to talk first.[/QUOTE]Pretty much how Kissinger got it.

People forget that wars are won with diplomacy and tact. Anyone can explde the hell of someone else, but it takes a diplomat to diffuse tensions and make US again a country people talk well about, not nthe butt of jokes around the world.

A bit sugar-coated, but it shows the difference in direction

And lets also remember that Iran has accepted IAEA inspections.

I have a feeling that Obama is eye-rolling just as much as everyone else in this thread. And I'll be honest, from the tones of some of the people in here it sounds like you are upset at Obama *for getting nominated.*
When Obama got woken up with the news this morning, his first thought was probably, "Motherfuckers, why are you making my life harder?"

It's not his fault at all. I wish he had rejected the award, but honestly, given his position, it was a no-win game regardless of how he played it, so humble acceptance with a pointed note about how he didn't deserve it over so many other, and how he was going to have to live up to it was probably the best way to go.

That won't stop the complaining. Hell, I wager in most cases it will be outright ignored.

He was nominated as Charlie said quite early in his term.

He hadn't done diddly squat, and he gets nominated? What a joke.

So, what exactly has he done to deserve this? Not that it matters, they gave the fucking thing to Arafat and Gore. Peace Prize doesn't mean shit anymore.
Errr, more towards peace in a few months than Bush did in 2 terms as president? But seeing online that most americans think "accomplishemnt" means attacking, killing and disobeying the same laws human rights and treaties previous presidents fought for, lets have a quick list off my mind?

Lets see,
-get Iran to allow frequent IAEA inspections
-getting Clinton´s arse out there to get back US reporters in North Korea
-Try and help to fix the shit Bush left in Afghanistan, when he forgot all about it and ran after Saddam with excuses of Alqaeda.
-Start talks with countries on an equal level
-regain confidence and respect of the world
-establish communication with Iran after 30 years
-get UN and other countries on board against nuclear weapons proliferation
-stop tensions with Russia over the missile shieal crap from the Bush years

USA was the laughingstock of the world, heck in Brazil jokes about USA and americans making shit, then making things worse as they try to fix their shit are as common as Argentinian jokes.

When I was in Malaysia, people were laughing in bars in Sept 11 when the planes hit.

In South Africa, all I heard was jokes about the US photo-op trying to make it look like Iraqis were toppling the Saddam statue, not american soldiers.

Like Kissinger, who opened up the East, and made headway into China and Russia with diplomacy that eventually weakened communism and allowed capitalism to go East, people are just gonna bitch that he didnt stop a war and overlook diplomacy that will have positive effects for many years to come.

Today´s US policy, what the nobel award described as -a world of zero nuclear weapons, fighting climate change, addressing Middle East peace, repairing relations between the US and the rest of the world, seeking rapprochement between the US and some if its major adversaries, seem to me the best US can offer the world.

Enjoy the fact that the world is giving you guys a homage and basically forgetting the Bush years and looking up to you, instead of bitching about it.

JCM, just b/c I think it is extremely premature that Obama was nominated, DOES NOT mean I am/was supportive of Bush. Got that chief?

What exactly do you hope to prove by telling us that assholes in Malaysia were laughing on 9-11?

And, no I don't think one wins a Peace Prize by blowing shit up or drawing a line in the sand. But, giving it to the likes of Arafat is fucking backwards. Would you give it to Bush if he ran around in the next few years calling for peace in the Middle East?

Well look who couldn't wait a few more years... what, where they scared that the world will end in 2012 or something?!

To be fair, I'm all in favour of Obama, but I really agree it was way too premature to give it to Obama. Seriously, there's adecent chance he'd have merited it, say, two or three years in, but now? Sorry ,this is a joke. Now if he actually ever accomplishes anything big (like, say, stabilize Iraq, transform Libya into a democratic state, stop the war between North and South Korea for good, what have you), he won't be able to get a genuinly earned Nobe lPeace Prize. Shame, really.

Arafat took a terrorist organization out of the business of terrorism.

It is like the quote from Star Trek -"Only Nixon could go to China." A lifelong McCarthy-ite has the credentials to stand on the world stage and shake hands with the ruler of the largest Communist country.

Even Obama has no idea why he got it:
WASHINGTON (AP) - A beaming President Barack Obama said Friday he was both honored and humbled to win the Nobel Peace Prize and would accept it as a "call to action" to work with other nations to solve the world's most pressing problems.
Obama told reporters in the White House Rose Garden that he wasn't sure he had done enough to earn the award, or deserved to be in the company of the "transformative figures" who had won it before him.
Seriously, NPR had it's, um, not exactly conservative analysts this morning scratching their head trying to figure out why this happened (with their conclusion basically being: He's not Bush). So great. Glad to know we can continue to not take the NPP seriously.:p

Hey, after 8 years of the most powerful country in the world's solution being "I don't get it, blow it up", I can't argue with their conclusions.

I think we can all agree that the nomination and win are a bit premature. He has done a lot though. I think it's disingenuous to say he hasn't done anything regarding world peach, though.

JCM, those are all fine accomplishments, but that's not really what the American people care about right now. To be perfectly honest, most of us don't care what the rest of the world thinks of us because we know we can't count on them when we need them. It's a bit self absorbed, but we're usually more concerned with Domestic policy that International policy, unless the latter gets us involved in a war we didn't ask for.

At home, we are in the middle of an economic depression. People are still losing jobs and can't afford to pay the bills, buy food, or have insurance at the same time. Our employers are taking advantage of the situation and are milking us for all we are worth because they know we won't quit and face the job market. Costs are rising, income is dropping... and Obama hasn't been able to do jack to fix it. He hasn't even STARTED to do jack. Is it really any surprise Americans are upset about Obama when his domestic policy is crap?

Dear Ash,

WTF?

Do you look at how Wall Street is preforming? That the Auto companies that are left are making a comeback.

We were hit with the biggest economic catastrophe since the Great Depression. There are so many thing fundamentally wrong with the economy, that there is not going to be a 8 month fix for it.

That really doesn't change the fact that it looks like Obama is spending more time trying to fix International Relations than he's spending trying to improve quality of life at home.

\"Common misconceptions about the Nobel Peace Prize\":

• Myth: The prize is awarded to recognize efforts for peace, human rights and democracy only after they have proven successful.

More often, the prize is awarded to encourage those who receive it to see the effort through, sometimes at critical moments.

So kind of a "If you don't act now, you'll look like a complete ass" sort of thing?

hAve you considered that
a) the rest of the word is in the same crisis you guys are in, because *your* economy tanked
and
b) your economy won't get back on its feet without internationally getting things moving again?

We're all economically interdependant on one another. Obama breeding goodwill will result in lower export tariffs, more free trade, easier access to foreign markets, more international investments in American companies, more trust int he USA as a stable nation, and so on.
Buidling international relations is at least as vital to the US economy as saving one or two banks more or less.
Also, he's done quite a lot for the US economy itself, as well - mostly being held back by, you know, democracy and paperwork. If you want a quick fix and so on, vote for a tyrant, not a president.

That peope didnt like the US?

But anyway, yeah, I agree its premature, but again, they decided to homage USA´s leading the way again.

Pretty much Amen.

Obama´s Nobel rpize is early, but he sure as hell is giving the world an example.

Well the cash for clunkers program did a lot for the ailing Japanese car market.

heh, Economy making a comeback. Sure the stock market is going up, because companies have been making cuts and tightening their belts. See funny thing is most companies know a little secret that the US Government doesnt. You can't spend what you don't have. But hey, lets just give money out to the people of Detroit, that will get them jobs again.

It's funny, I was playing the Monopoly game at McDonald's and one of the tabs was an instant win for a Nobel Peace Prize! I think I'll throw it up on Ebay.

So the economy is showing signs of improvement, and Obama is also improving international relations, and you're saying that's a bad thing?!?

You can question the methods, you can question the potential future problems, but saying that he's spending too much time doing one thing rather than another when that other was dealt with first? What the hell do you want from him?

Surely his job is to do all these things at once? If he didn't you'd be critical of him. Yet when he does you're critical of him. Seems to be no win.

A perfect example of the benefits of internationalisation, you have the option of getting these Japanese cars. Some people in this thread seem to want the choice, without providing any respect to the rest of the world. Sorry folks, doesn't work that way.
