To all the goalies out there!

MONTREAL -- Imagine if an NHL goaltender skated out to start a game not wearing a mask.

Today it's unthinkable. But until Nov. 1, 1959, all goalies played without them, exposing their faces to bone-crushing shots that sometimes left them bleeding and unconscious in the crease.

Fifty years ago Monday at Madison Square Garden in New York, Jacques Plante of the Montreal Canadiens changed hockey.
Of course, this is a special anniversary for me because Jacques is family :) (My father-in-law's uncle)

So there you go, keeping goalies pretty since 1959.

Damn you, Jacques! The best part of playing forward is aiming for the goalie's head.

Heh I think it was the Thrasher goalie who lost his mask last night. Instead of blowing the play dead, it continued until he took a shot off the throat. Some nice old school hockey.

LoL 1930's old school!

I can't imagine playing goalie without a mask. I once sat behind the net at a Sabres game and those shots scared me.

I get freaked the hell out when my asshole teammates take shots at me when my back is turned in the net before practice while I'm getting a drink. Nothing feels worse than a puck to the back.
