I realized I've been lurking/posting here for a while, but never made an official intro thread, so here goes....Hello from NZ, home of Hobbits and sheep. I'm a director by trade and create webcomics as a hobby. Sometimes I even get paid to draw and write, which is pretty cool.

Any questions, feel free to ask :)

Have you directed anything that anyone here might have seen?

So YOU'RE the New Zealander! I always saw someone from there peeked in but never knew who.

What do you think of Flight of the Conchords and do you have issues with Australians?

I'm pretty sure theres another one floating around here somewhere...

I love Flight of the Conchords.....it was actually turned down by TVNZ, then went on to be an international hit. Yay TVNZ.

I actually don't know that many Australians, and the ones I do I have no problems with. Personally, I find the whole Oz vs NZ thing to be fairly overblown, mainly by sporting commentators and politicians, and it can actually become quite embarrassing, like a manufactured rivalry to make ourselves feel important.

A lot of the time it feels like this country is jumping up and down like a hyperactive 4 year old, shouting 'Look at me, look what I'm doing', and the rest of the world glances over, comments on how cute it is and then goes back to adult stuff.

Did you dra your avatar yourself?
If so, has anyone mentioned you're a cool artist?
As an aside, has anyone said that, if you did, your artistic style seems to be pretty close to Fade's?
How many times have you gotten a ticket?
Edith Piaf or John Travolta?
Frank Sinatra or Elvis?

Yes I did, and thank you :)

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with his work.

How many times have you gotten a ticket?
Driving/Speeding not so many. Parking, too many

Edith Piaf or John Travolta?
What an odd choice? I can't imagine how Edith Piaf would look in tight leather pants and a quiff, or even a white suit, so I'm going to have to go with John Travolta.

Frank Sinatra or Elvis?
Neither are really my cup of tea, but I'll have to go with Elvis.

As a director, what is your opinion of the current glut of retreads coming out of Hollywood. Do you think this is a good thing or bad thing for smaller, international film makers?

I think that 'Paranormal Activity' and to a degree 'District 9' have proven that its entirely possible for anyone to make a movie and gain an international audience. And with HD filming and editing technology becoming cheaper all the time, its easier than ever to make movies. I am currently typing this on a macbook pro that would have no trouble at all cutting a feature film shot at full 1080p.

The technical side is becoming easier. The hard part, as is always is, was or shall be is coming up with a good story.

I think that Hollywood retreads, remakes and the like make audiences lazy, more accepting of lower quality and less willing to go along to a film that could make them actually think. So in that sense, its a bad thing for filmmaking in general.

How has NZ changed since LOTR?

Has the tourism died down?

Are there still Hobbits and such running about selling tshirt?

Did you get in on the filming at all? An extra? Anything?

Very little to be honest.

The Hobbiton sets are still standing at Matamata and people can still pay exorbitant rates to visit them. The woman who apparently played Mrs Bracegirdle runs a Hobbit themed hotel and even has her own youtube channel starring most of the NZ based actors from LOTR

No, I wasn't in the films, but I know plently of people who were. I'm good friends with the guy who provided motion capture data for most of the orcs in massed battles, and then sued New Line because he wasn't credited.

Actually in NZ its already 2013....the Mayan prophecies are complete bunk, but the Hobbit Movie rocks! :)
