Snowball throwing idiots surprised by a man with a gun

It's stories like these that let me know I'm turning into a grumpy old man.

here is the youtube link first, i believe it picks up after the off duty officer has already brandished his gun.

After hearing about and then watching this video I'm on the side of the guy with the gun.

I know that the people who showed up wanted to stage a harmless harken back to yester year old fashioned snowball fight between themselves and a group of around 200 showed up.

So my first question is just common sense, why the hell stage it at a busy intersection rather then a public park?

Why were they throwing snowballs into and at traffic, whether the cars were stopped or not that is dumb and illegal (A lesson I learned when I was five and was throwing crab apples at traffic and was stopped by a cop, but again I was FIVE) Show up for a snowball fight but fight amongst your selves why the hell are you throwing things at traffic and uninvolved pedestrians.

When a man with a gun exits a vehicle with the weapon drawn you DON'T taunt him by throwing a snowball at him and hitting him in the face, gun or not that is also assault. And really do not taunt the man with a gun is just a good rule to live by.

I don't know, watching the video and seeing some of the news coverage and interviews of the victims, who showed up unannounced and in force to begin their snowball fight and started this confrontation by throwing into traffic and at others who were not involved in their hijinks and hilarity and they are whining about how it was so innocent and that mean old guy whose mean old hummer (probably a republican too cause they don't like fun) we pelted without cause or provaction and we are shocked, shocked that he would be angry at us and try to spoil our fun by bringing a gun to a snowball fight he was not particapating in or invited too. The nerve of some people.

I don't know why this story is under my skin right now but screw every single one of those thoughtless selfish having no common sense idiots and thier idea to have a snowball fight basically in the middle of traffic.

No, i don't think he was within his rights to pull a gun but I'd be pissed too if a group of close to two hundred people decided my car was perfect for snowball target practice, I don't blame him for being mad and he never should have pulled a gun on the group but they have no one to blame but themsevles and thier lack of common sense.

I'm on the detectives side because I fucking hate college goons in a mob who do illegal things and assume they can get away with it because they're in a fucking mob.

Agreed.

Morons throwing snowballs into moving traffic in the middle of an icy road in visibility impaired conditions deserve every bit of this and more. I'm just sad more of them didn't get arrested.

Fricking idiots thing they can do anything they want, anywhere. And throwing the snowball into the face of the pissed, ARMED cop? Glad that tard got hauled in.

Both sides were wrong in this scenario.

The assholes who were throwing into traffic sound like the real problem.

But the cop, what the hell was he thinking? Was he going to shoot if they continued to throw snowballs at him?

He shouldn't have pulled out his gun. He should have simply told the crowd to quit throwing snowballs.

If those yahoos were just throwing them at each other, none of this would have happened. You're pretty stupid to throw a snowball at a cop or anyone with a gun for that matter.

Because one man, with a badge, giving orders to a mob of unruly jackasses has SO much power over them.
Yeah, he'd be pretty powerless, but at least it would have started things off on a somewhat agreeable footing. Start with the least forceful option and then work your way up to pulling a gun, don't start with pulling a gun - it's very hard to de-escalate a situation.

Plus, if he had started out by asking the punks to stop, then telling them to stop, then calling in on-duty officers, etc.; this would be a non-story. Instead, we have an off-duty officer whose first reaction to the situation was to exit his vehicle and pull a gun, giving bored news media a great story - news media always likes it when groups of college students and armed cops collide. It harkens back to the good old days of Vietnam protests, race riots, and looting.

Now, I'm not saying that the officer was in the wrong to intervene, and I'm not even going to try to say that procedurally what he did was wrong, because I don't know police procedure rules; but from a media fire-storm angle, he done effed up.

I love the asshattery herd mentality of the mob. Like when someone yelled "Don't bring a gun to a snowball fight!" Then it became a chant. /facepalm

They were so self righteous that it sickens me. It is like they thought they were doing something important like protesting a war. They were just a mob formed to cause problems. Including assault and property damage.

Wow...am I REALLY the only one on the side of the people who were just having a little harmless fun?

Harmless fun is throwing the snowballs at themselves. When you start involving cars/private property and other people, it stops being harmless.

Notice there isn't any video BEFORE the whole thing.

Of course the cop was in civvies, the kids "didn't know" he was a cop. I don't know. I think the cop did told them to stop and the kid didn't so he brandish his gun and badge and call in backup.

Of course the kids made a BIG mistake of hitting the cop with a snowball. What were they thinking?

snowball are harmless until you throw into traffic, people can panic and lose control of the car and cause injuries.

People don't typically upload video making themselves look stupid - they upload video making the other person look like the bad guy. This is why the cardinal rule of video debate is "Let's see the whole thing unedited."

yup. that is why even when making the cop look stupid, I'm sure there is more to it than that.

What would you guys do if you were confronted by a scenario such as this?
I'd obviously gun down anyone who thinks snowballs are fun... because the dirty hippies deserve it.

Seriously over-reacting. If this guy wasn't a cop he'd be in jail right now.
Cops do a lot of things that they'd be in jail for if they weren't cops. It kind of comes with the job. For example, I'm pretty certain I'd go to jail for multiple offenses if I chased another car at over 100 mph, sideswiped them into a skid, and then tackled, tased, and restrained the driver.

What is a cop's main responsibility? Keep the peace. They're expected to do this even when they're off-duty. The snowball throwers were involving people who didn't want to be part of their cute little deal, so they violated the law. The off-duty cop was DOING HIS JOB.

The off-duty cop was DOING HIS JOB.
Except for identifying himself with his badge.
Besides that.

You're right, he should have identified himself with his badge; he won't get a pass from me on that one. I was taking on the whole "COPZ SUXOR!!!" attitude that pops up when things like this happen.

Its all harmless fun until someone crashes or gets run down.

I don't even know why there is an argument over this. If they had been on a peaceful protest or whatever? That's their right, I would be all against the cop. They could have gone some place non-disruptive. They were being idiots though and the entire thing was pointless and dangerous.
