Are ren faires in Finland actually somewhat accurate to the historical setting, or are they a big mish-mash of retarded fantasy concepts like they are here in the States?

I hate going to the Ren Fair to because of this to be honest. Nothing puts me off to the setting faster than seeing guys dressed up as 17th century pirates gallivanting around with 13th century monks.

Ren Faires are like musicals to me. I just get embarrassed by the whole spectacle. Which--I'm sure you've already come to this conclusion-- is a personal problem.

Also I love taking away other people's fun.

They always look fun to me. I'd get too shy and embarrassed to keep up any kind of role play, probably, but I think it would be cool to see. I like watching people LARP and get really into roles. It seems like a really fun and creative way to pass the time--playing a game of make believe just like when you were a kid. :)

That's where the embarrassment stems from. I don't know, I'm a cynical, bitter person (derp). I get embarrassed watching people play act like that.


And blech, I get so embarrased for the people in the musicals. It makes me cringe. Hate them hate them hate them

Well sure, if pretending is grown men and women walking around pretending to be pirates in some imaginary world. I also find the people that don't break character in Settlement towns and museums weird.

Imagination ain't a problem--I love art and creativity. I just find certain things lame. So it goes.

The ren faire I used to work at was more historical, but over the last 10 years has become a "medieval theme park" (in the words of the entertainment director). They've taken away the historical accuracy for dragons, faeries, and the "Miller Lite Knight" (gag)

NR's fair looks pretty awesome, and of the more historical variety.

I can be embarrassed for people who are embarrassed for themselves. But being embarrassed for people who are enjoying themselves seems like a huge waste.

The good thing is, people who are enjoying themselves doing something that a lot of people find embarrassing/lame don't even care that you may feel embarrassed for them =)

*shrug* I'm not doing it because of some moral standard. I just feel innately embarrassed for them. And yeah, it's not like they care. SO I get to have my opinion, and they get theirs, and if I don't have to deal with any stupid ren faires or musicals, and they get to go to them and be happy, well then

That's fair enough. We can't really control those visceral reactions. We can keep them internal when it's not appropriate to express them, but that's usually it, heh.

I'm pretty sure the bum-preachers on their subway soapboxes don't care that I'm embarrassed for them either. Juski and I agree on Ren Faires. Go figure...
