I was surprise this wasn't posted (at least didn't find in fast search) It seems that people are really upset of "draw a Muhammad day" I am kinda surprise that people don't want a depiction of their prophet. Jesus is a prophet for Christianity, and they want his picture everywhere (to help spread the word)

what I find it interesting that there is enough vocal people who institute a ban and YET people WITHIN the country STILL work their way around to view it (at least that is what the article implies)

*technically he's actually God FYI, somewhat of a difference.

On topic though, I thought about contributing but then I decided I've had enough Fatwa's placed on my head.[/QUOTE]

really? oh. Many articles keep refer him as prophet. My bad.

You're reading bad articles then.

I had the Muhammad depiction explained to me as it being a way of preventing people from worshiping him as a false idol. I don't know if that's true but if it is it sounds like many people of Islam have taken it a bit too far.

No he's not. Christ is only considered God to Christians. To the Muslims, he is a prophet (and seen as the precursor and foreteller of Muhammad), and to Jews he is a false Messiah, as the very idea that he is part or wholly God is heretical to Judaism's teachings.

ah. So the idea behind the whole "it is bad if you draw Muhammad" is to prevent worship false prophet? I am really try to understand the reasoning behind all of this.

I see many other religion have no issue having their prophet, holy people, idols, God, god, gods what have you display/drawn. I notice that this particular one is VERY violent about it.

Chibi wrote "for Christians" and thus Jesus is God in that context.

Yes, to people who are not of the Christian religion this is true, but he used the term in reference to what Christians believe, so it in that context it doesn't really matter what other religions think it matters what the religion you are referring to believes.

Actually, orthodox Jews do not allow full-featured sculptures and/or paintings of any human form. It comes from the 10 commandments - no graven images. It is mainly to prevent idol worship like you stated.

Most Christians don't have a problem with pictures of Saints/God/Jesus, etc. Worshipping the block of wood shaped like a cross or the stained glass image and treating it as God would technically be idol worship.

Why the Christians and Jews don't get violent about abuses of this commandment is another story.

well. I'm not Christian so to me, Jesus is a prophet, but that is where I'm trying to understand the whole "We will kill you if you draw Muhammad" I know that some of the forum member are not violent Muslim as some are back in the "homeland" I mean fight broke out for a caricature and now blocking facebook and youtube. I just find it pretty extreme.

so to the people that would be offended by pictures of Jesus... Jesus is God. The rest does not matter.

*snipped the bit about what the rest of the world thinks of Mohamed.

But you see, people love to have Jesus on stuff (candles, walls, posters, movies etc etc) You don't see Riot broke out if a picture of Jesus appear on a shot glass, but heaven forbid if Muhammad's picture appear on a piece of paper.

Actually the Koran prohibits the depiction of any human form or face in art, having their prophet Muhammad drawn specifically is just rubbing salt in the wound.
Drawing Muhammad with a diaper fetish and homofilia is pouring gas on the wound and tossing a lit match. Personally I think a little fire would do them freakazoids good. That's the difference between fanatics and people that just have a belief system. The whole point for this day is partly to show, go ahead, get all freaky deaky, we ain't gonna kneel to the fear you are trying to make us feel.

Anyhow, another side note, Jesus is noted in the Koran as a minor prophet, but not the son of god.

Really? Well the comparative religion classes I took way back when owe me a explanation then don't they. *gives a stern look to the correspondence course* Yes, they do indeed.

History lesson time!

Way back, in the Hebrew oral tradition/bible(Talmud), one of Moses's commandments included a bit about not being able to worship false idols. This idea made its way into Roman/Byzantine Christianity, and, because we're talking about Rome and Byzantium here, got taken ridiculously out of proportion. 'Iconoclasm', the practice destroying any and all images of human beings(because god's creations are too perfect to draw), became a pretty popular practice. That's why we only have tiny slivers of ancient culture left these days - it wasn't the ravaging of time that destroyed all these historical documents and monuments, it was the ravaging of stupid.

Iconoclasm in European and Eastern Orthodox Christian churches died out for the most part over a thousand years ago, with a few exceptions. In Islam, which came from Christianity and is more similar than many people would like to admit, the practice never really went away. And that's why you can't only not draw Mohammad, but you aren't supposed to draw people or even living things at all. Which is why most of their art consists of patterns and writing.

And that's how most of our avatars are sins against god.

Lol, I'm assuming holy images never appear on Muslim toast.

On a related note, I loved the Amazing Atheist's DM Day vid.
