Ghibli movie Tales from Earthsea, U.S. release

A couple years ago, Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, Ponyo, Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke) made a movie based on the Earthsea fantasy novels, however, Sci-Fi (I mean SyFy -_-) had exclusive U.S. distribution rights to the Earthsea brand. You know, to ensure quality.

Anyway, I guess that's over now, because suddenly Tales from Earthsea is getting a U.S. theatrical release on August 13th. My guess is that it won't be a very wide release. Ponyo had a decent distribution, but Disney's putting this one out through Touchstone, so who knows?

In any case, any new Ghibli is a reason to get excited, even if the author of the books (which I've never read) hated it. Authors tend to do that... Hopefully it doesn't have a rap song at the end credits a la Ponyo. The dub includes voice acting by Willem Dafoe and Timothy Dalton, among others.

One more movie to see this summer.

You don't have a choice in the theater. I thought of complaining to the guy in the projection booth, but you know, they're kind of stuck with what they're given.

EDIT: Actually, I do watch Mononoke with the dub, despite Claire Daine's awful voicework for San, but that's because for some reason the music volume and voice volume on the Japanese audio track is really screwed up, so the voice's are really loud and the music is hard to hear. It's possible that's just my DVD though.

Ah watching in the theatre I understand. I haven't watched the Ghibli films or any japanese animation anywhere but home.

Yeah, I think it's Goro Miyazaki's directing debut. That said, I have a feeling from the look of it that Hayao couldn't completely keep his hands off. He never means it when he says he's retiring.

Okay, I can see where the confusion came from--I never specified theatrical or DVD. I'll edit the OP.

Ponyo had decent distribution? I remember looking for theaters that were showing it and only finding 2 within 40 miles of my home.

I tried to like tales from earthsea. i really did. but i couldn't stand it. it felt like they took a 6 hour long epic and stripped away almost all of it, leaving a bunch of loose plot threads dangling in the wind. theres scenes like say, a incident with some guy pushing some illicit substance in an alley. surely this kind of thing is going to come up later in the film. but it never does. i felt like that the whole way through the film.

Animation is amazing straight out amazing visuals.

The storyline unfortunately is rather forgettable. I'll be damned if I remember more than a rough outline of the movie. It isn't bad, I don't remember being angry at it or even really disappointed but ultimately the storyline is just incredibly forgettable.

I feel like adding I have the significant problem that, if I watch Japanese Movies or Anime without dubbing, no one wants to watch them with me.

Of course, no one wants to watch it with me if it has a particularly bad dub, either.

So far I've only been able to watch Cowboy Bebop and Spirited Away with non-Anime-obsessed friends.
