cells. This is pretty cool. Granted if you are born blind or eyes are severely damage, it will not work but at least it is a cool step.

For those do not want to read the article.
Basically they are taking some stem cells from the healthy eye or at least enough stem cells from it and replicate it (not sure how didn't say in the article) and "graft" it back to the eye after removing the scar tissue from it.

Still... pretty neat it is a good step.

... hey... I have a good eye and a bad eye.. wonder how much it costs?

crap.. my problem with left eye is in the retina, not the cornea. =(

That is really awesome stuff. Stem cells really are amazing.

heh. I have no clue. I read the article at random and find it VERY interesting that they have successfully restore an eye that was damage YEARS ago from chemical burn. That is pretty awesome.

But I think we are still far far away from regenerating an eye. Any scientist wanna comment on that?

A Guide to Nearsightedness (Myopia), Farsightedness (hyperopia) and Astigmatism.

huh.. long time ago (well before Lasik) my doctor said a part of my eye was shaped like a squished tennis ball.. according to that article, the one with astigmatism, which was said I had, is shaped like a rugby football. Soooo... man I need to see a doc about options! There's gotta be a way to reshape the part needing fixing?!?!

Stem cells are really the wave of the future in terms of medical advancement. There would be so much more awesome stuff like this coming out if Federal regulations on various stem cell lines would open up. Rats and mice are fun and all, but man oh man what I could do if I got my hands on some fetal stem cells.

I should have a few jars of the stuff lying around the basement. I'll see what'll cost to mail you up a couple.

Would a future application of this technology be to restore 20/20 vision in people with conditions like myopia and astigmatism?

In future, I think it is possible with my very limited understanding. I mean the stem cell taken from the good eye essentially regenerate cornea. I'm sure when the "raw form" of stem cell (like the one from embryo or something similar that can be manipulate to anything) could regenerate a whole eye combine with the other thread of Dr. Venture's research of reprogramming/artificial DNA instruction could possibly do it. It would be basically writing your own code (DNA) and then compile into a limp, eye, ears, even skin color right? (stem cells)

again, this is what I can see the possibility.

So.... Stem Cells are Bioshock's ADAM (or vice-versa) - not trolling, just trying to put it into a context. I knew OF stem cells, but I don't know that much ABOUT them... I didn't realise they were versatile to this extent...

heh. there are several sources, but the "pure source" (at least the most universal, I think there is a difference where the stem cell comes from and what you can do with it) are from embryos.

Nope. If your eyes are terribad, taking your own stem cells and creating a new eye will not fix the problem. Your eyes being terribad have to do with their shape, which is a genetic trait.

Limit Stem Cells cure blindness (if you have one working eye or some surviving st

Well that sucks... there's got to be a way to fix my stupid myopia that doesn't involve cutting up my cornea with laser beams.

How come so many people need glasses now? Do we all have craptastic genetics or something?

Limit Stem Cells cure blindness (if you have one working eye or some surviving st

Maybe. We also strain our eyes more and live longer.

Limit Stem Cells cure blindness (if you have one working eye or some surviving st

Also, glasses aren't so hard to get nowadays, so it doesn't put you at a big disadvantage with 20/20's when it comes to food&family.

And computers. They rape my eyes daily, and I come back for more ~_~

Because about a million to 500,000 years ago, if you had bad vision, you were dead. If you're dead, you can't pass on offspring with bad vision. There are lots of theories out there on how the development of society and culture caused a wave of dysgenics. I happen to agree with a lot of these theories especially when it comes to cancer, immune disorders, autism, and retardation. There are other factors too like the fact that we have such a huge population leading to simple probability that bad genes get passed along at a much more pronounced rate.

even if that trait is remove and "reprogram"?

well also today people are allow to have children regardless of traits. So I can agree that issues are being pass down to newer generation.

I can totally see Gattaca style where you can take all the "bad stuff" out of your children and maybe the future will have less genetic issue (but that is a whole different debate on morals and society changes)

Finding genes and identifying what they do is essentially what some people spend their entire careers doing. Furthermore, you're suggesting that there's a "normal" trait for something like eye shape that one can go in and simply replace. This isn't the case. Messing with morphology traits of an individual can have drastic effects on how the rest of things work down the line. It's pretty amazing how many downstream effects altering a few basepairs can have. You're right it opens a whole can of worms actually reaching beyond the typical eugenics debate. Essentially, you're starting to fuck with the very fabric that makes humans human. Say in 500 to a thousand years if we have the technology to manipulate genomes to the extent of making whatever we want out of them, are heavily modified people going to be even considered human?

Sounds like a bad sci-fi novel... (hint: this issue was touched on in Jurassic Park)

I have a feeling scientist like Chaz do have high moral than the government officials when it comes to science. I'm sure the Military would love to tinker and make stuff that no one else has and use it as a weapon.
I am just thinking of a distant future where if this is even remotely possible, some country would do it (I can think China might do it)but we are far far away from that. More than likely it would be our children's childrens x5 or x10 generation before we something of this level.

Military scientists have to adhere to the same scientific standards that any academic does. If anything government funded work has a billion times more paperwork to fill out than privately funded projects. NIH funding is essentially taxpayer dollars going into health related research. To even get a grant you have to detail your expertise and plans which are reviewed by a panel committee consisting of other scientists in the field AND appointed citizens.

There are no secret government labs (none that I know of) making mutant freak soldiers. The only thing I can think of that comes close are the bioweapon's divisions at various government agencies, but even those have closer objectives to groups like WHO, over actually making bioweapons.
