Avatar: The Last Airbender sequel coming in 2011

I wonder if it will take place directly with the next Avatar after Aang or if it will transpire several Avatars before/after Aang. On a weird thought I was wondering the next Avatar will be from the Water tribe. So I was wondering what would happen if Aang and Katara had a kid and Aang died the very moment the kid was born and their kid became the next Avatar?

Well from the image, it looks like Korra is likely Water Tribe so it IS possible that this is the Avatar after Aang... however, the world looks MUCH more advanced. It's just as likely that she's pretty far removed. In any event, I kinda hope that it's NOT their kid, because it would be much more dramatic if Katara was forced to interact with this new Avatar without the mother-child relationship.

However, this DOES make me hopefully that at least one question will be answered: If this is an Avatar after Aang, she's going to need to learn Airbending from someone. So it's possible that we'll find out if the Air Nomads were re-created by Aang after the events of the first series, or if Aang really WAS the Last Airbender... in which case, she'll need to learn it from him or another previous incarnation.

I saw a rumor on one site that said the show was going to be 100 years in the future but than again with how long an Avatar lives plus the time it takes for the new Avatar to grow it would seem likely to be the Avatar directly after Aang but than again the hundred year thing is just a rumor.

When I first read the title I thought it meant new live action film... then it dawned on me that that would be impossibly fast, and it must mean a new animated show.

So basically: :Leyla: to :awesome:

I wonder who the bad guys will be this time.
I'm betting on the Earth Kingdom, simply by dint of being the ascendant power. After the mauling that everyone else took during Aang's time, they were the ones who came out on top.

Plus, it would be thematically appropriate. The first one had Air versus Fire, so why not Earth versus Water for the next one?

Or from sky bison... unless Appa was the last of his kind as well.

Theory I had was that the conflict would be about the Spirit world (maybe kinda Champions of Kamigawa-esque), with Koh as a major player.

I like that theory.

So, just so I can get this straight... the Avatar's pretty much Captain Planet, right?

Nickelodeon Greenlights The Legend of Korra

The Legend of Korra takes place 70 years after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender and follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang – a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra. With three of the four elements under her belt (Earth, Water, and Fire), Korra seeks to master the final element, Air. Her quest leads her to the epicenter of the modern "Avatar" world, Republic City – a metropolis that is fueled by steampunk technology. It is a virtual melting pot where benders and non-benders from all nations live and thrive. However, Korra discovers that Republic City is plagued by crime as well as a growing anti-bending revolution that threatens to rip it apart. Under the tutelage of Aang's son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training while dealing with the dangers at large.

Crazy theory: Avatar may pull a Buffy with this one. CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:

At the end of Book 2, Azula shot Aang with lightning, through the chest. It was heavily implied that she killed him until Katara revived him using water from the Spirit Oasis. Even though Azula and Zuko were correctly suspicious that he was still alive, he may have died briefly.

It is possible that the new Avatar, this Korra, could have been born at that very instant. Aang is revived, and as far as the world knows, he is still the one and only Avatar.

Imagine their shock when a teenaged Korra displays some affinity with a second element and must be the new, SECOND Avatar.

Imagine when there is only one person in the world who can train her in her final element. :awesome:

Well I'm glad that they are going to continue the series, but spin-offs are usually bad.

I hope this one is different.

Even if he did die for a second only to be brought back to life by Katara for that period of time there would be no Avatar spirit to pass along since since Aang was going into his Avatar state when he was shot by the lightning.

Avatar is actually a spirit that pass from one generation to another. Water is next since before was Earth (Kioshi), Fire (Roku), Air (Aang) and now water :)

If you watch the whole series, technically there are some air bender left in the desert. They are sand benders (in form of air) which are technically not earth benders... more like hybrid, but they are descendant of air nomads

The sandbenders are still technically earthbenders they are just a specialized style of earthbenders

Baby Aang holds promise. I winced when I read about fighting crime in a steampunk city... there are other conflicts to settle... I hope.

Well we know that the creators wanted Koh to have more of a role in the last series, so it's entirely possible that he'll play a more active role in this series. Imagine a sudden rash of face stealing in the slums of the city... sounds like Spirit World business, doesn't it? Toss in some inter-culture conflict and things could get very interesting.

The anti-bender sentiment was something I knew would come up eventually, if the series ever got a sequel. It seems like benders are almost always the cause of all the problems in their world... after a century of bloodshed started and continued by benders, don't you think the "normal" people of the world would get sick of being caught up in this shit? Besides, will the rise of technology, bending isn't really as necessary as it once was.

It's also likely that some of the old sentiments from the War are still going strong in the city. Expect to see roving gangs of benders attacking each other over slights from the last War.

But!

Aang "died" while in the avatar state, thus breaking the cycle.

BAM!

BAM!

Aang's connection to the previous Avatars was re-established in the last episodes, when his chakra was unblocked by the sharp blow to the rocks. It doesn't really matter that he died in the Avatar state... his connection was re-established.

I realize that, what I mean though is that there wouldn't be a 2nd avatar in that situation because he died in the avatar state.

They could throw a curvball at us and have this new avatar be some new TYPE of avatar that the world created because the first avatar finally died died, even though he came back.

This is assuming that the mystical avatar world works more like a computer program or something instead of magic where they can know the future n shit.

I'm, of course, stoked and will definitely be watching this when it comes out, but...

I had kinda hoped that the show's creators would leave well enough and move on to something completely original.

Believe me when I say it's not enough to scare me away from watching the hell out of this.

They actually both DID move on to separate projects while the movie was being made. However, I think those projects didn't pan out so they came back to Avatar.

As for something original... well, this setting still has a lot of stories to tell, especially considering they left so many things unanswered in the original series. Hell, we didn't even know for sure that Jet died until they finally just came out and said it in an interview.

Oh, yeah, like I said...don't get me wrong, I am down for this new series. Especially jumping ahead like that, so everyone we know will either be long gone or at the very least, super old (much like many of Aang's old friends).

But at the same time, these guys are clearly incredibly creative and I had hoped we'd see something entirely new from them.

This does raise the question as to how she'll get around places without Appa. I'm guessing there'll be a lot of coast cities.

I think the point is that its mostly taking place in one city, but that city is big and complex and interesting. Essentially they're keeping the world, but they're showing what happens in that world when you invert most of the tropes of the original series. (main character is a serious girl instead of silly boy, one central location instead of a new location each episode, etc).

I recently finished the series on Netflix. I love it.

Even if I like the theory of the second avatar due to Aang's death (even though he was in the Avatar state, which would cause the next avatar to not be born), that means she'd be 70 by the time of the series, yet the drawing looks like and description says she's a teenager.

I can see one season of the city. If it goes well, there could be more season. If not, adventures could move outside of it. And, I can't wait to see what her spirit animal is. Roku had the dragon, Aang had Aapa. I'm sure the girl will have something that can get her from place to place. I also read that the series will have a more grown up feel to it than the original did.

I just hope they keep the slapstick stuff. It's what makes the series charming and the movie fall so flat.
