Yeah, my family's in New Orleans for the whole week. We'll be doing some stuff together but I'll spend most of the time doing my own thing. My hotel's in the French Quarter so there are plenty of places to visit. However, is there anything a 27-year-old male like me would particularly like doing?

There are a lot to do on the Quarter, most of it is illegal and the men like to do it...
If you have any interest in history check out the National World War II Museum. I am a partying nerd, that spent half my time in museums, and half my time with a "BIG ASS BEER" in my hand.
Find "Mother's" for breakfast at least once while you are there. It will be worth the wait.

Get at least one Hurricane at Pat O'Brien's. They are pricey, but is such a traditional thing to drink while you are there.
If the Police have anything to say to you... do it. They are widely known for whipping the crap out of non-compliant drunks.

I agree with this 100%. Canal Street is overpriced for what you can get elsewhere.
If you like bar hopping, might want to consider skipping Bourbon St., try the bars on Frenchman St. instead. Much better atmosphere for the price.
Even if you are not really into history, you should make time and go to the WW2 museum. It is really worth it, one of the better museums I have ever been to. Also, the bar in the American Sector at the museum is not bad, though the food there can be pricey.
New Orleans has a assload of museums if you like that sort of thing. The Cabildo is a nice history museum, Mardi Gras World is a short ferry hop to the Westbank, I think it's free for pedestrians, that gives a history of Mardi Gras and the floats themselves. Not much else to do on the Westbank though. There are small museums all over town, in the historical houses in the city.
Harrah's on Canal St. if you like to gamble every now and then, not a bad casino.
If you are bringing anything back home, probably best to get it from the French Market. Probably best prices for that kind of thing in town.
Try out some of the Audobon Institute attractions. The zoo, aquarium, and insectarium are all top notch.
As for places to eat, you really can't go wrong in this city. Just ask someone at the hotel where to eat and you really can't miss.

I also need to add, your family is going there at the worst possible time of year. You really need to go between October and early April, skip Mardi Gras. The Late Spring through Summer and Early Fall is HOT. And the problem with the heat is the smell. There is a bunch of different bodily fluids dropped on the streets in the French Quarter, and when the thermometer is over 80, it begins to reek.
Dude, you are going to be walking your arse off in 100 degree heat, eat and drink what you will, it won't stick with you.
If you are going to get souvenirs definitely hit that French Market before the tourist traps.
Since you are there for a week, go to the museum more than once. I spent an entire day there, and did not see everything that I wanted. Now the museum is twice as large.

And Hyimi, it's not just the price of Canal Street, it's that now the only restaurants are Wendy's, Taco Bell, and other shitty chains... maybe a tourist trap or two... but nothing worth your money. The PJ's on Canal is nice, though. The dude who's usually there is very sweet and friendly.

I went to the French Market yesterday and walked around Jackson Square and the Washington Artillery Park. It's National Farmers' Market Week so there was a lot going on at the French Market. I had some of the best pecan praline and got some jambalaya mix. Today I went to the Cabildo Museum and had a great time.
I also need to exercise tonight, because I've eaten more fried foods over the past several days than I normally consume in a month.

If you get sick of Creole and want Cajun, come about 2 hours west to Lafayette. There are some fun things for visitors to do. And lots of good food. Plus, I'm here, which is awesome. Baton Rouge if you do the capitols.

Yeah, it's been hellish, weather-wise. But there is delicious Cajun food here.
And I'm here too!.. at least for a couple more days.Excellent. Man, you have me fired up to go back some time.
Our fall does not kick in until mid October.
