D&D Jay's Game - Things to Do By Thursday

Point form stylez, because apparently I can't write anything this week.

Early Life
- Born to Thurzin and Darla Stormfist, the ruling family of the Stormfist Clan.
- The Stormfist Clan is a family of lesser nobles in Ironmaster, the last trading hub between Icewind Dale and the world at large.
- The Stormfist Clan is a proud, resilient and strong household, known for their fortitude and upstanding reputation. They are a clan of warriors of virtue.
- Stormfist men generally work as guards in Ironmaster, while women raise the children in the proud dwarven tradition.
- Warriors of the Stormfist Clan identify themselves by emblazoning the family crest, two isosceles triangles in blue, on their faces. It is a mark of great pride for them.

Adult Life
- Helga was raised to uphold all the cornerstones of dwarven culture and Stormfist family values.
- She fell in love with a visiting dwarven adventurer, Magar Stonesmirk.
- Her father, Thurzin, protested to their union, because Magar was a scoundrel and acted more like a chaotic halfling than a proud dwarf.
- Thurzin was concerned that Magar would join the family, dwindle their coffers, sully their hard-earned reputation, and ultimately break Helga's heart.
- Reluctantly, he allowed Magar to marry into the Stormfist clan, on the agreement with Helga that she would not let him ruin everything the family had built.
- Several years passed, and Helga had two children - a boy named Kurzon, and a girl named Jalee a few years later.
- Eventually Magar became sick of being cooped up and the wanderlust crept back in. He resumed his life of adventuring.
- Helga remained at home to raise the children, left only to wonder what her husband was up to out in the Dale, both missing him and suspicious of him.

Recently
- Helga continued to raise her children for a couple more years, until a family messenger arrived with grim news.
- The bloody belongings of Magar were returned to Helga's home, including his craghammer and shield, and a few bloodstained documents.
- Magar was presumed dead.
- The documents seemed to be IOUs for gambling debts in a small port town called Dougan's Hole. Magar had been squandering money from the Stormfist coffers all this time.
- Helga was devastated at the loss of her husband, and Thurzin was infuriated at his behaviour.
- As per their agreement from years earlier, Helga would now have to go out into Icewind Dale and correct any damage Magar had caused in his final years.
- Without giving herself the time to properly grieve, Helga left Kurzon and Jalee with her mother, painted the crest upon her face, took up her late husbands hammer and shield, and left Ironmaster.
- Going on the only lead she had at the time, she headed for Dougan's Hole to pay off his one known debt.

Motivation
- Helga's mission is to right any wrongs she's heard of being committed by Magar Stormfist, in order to restore her family's reputation.
- Her personal mission is to use the stories she hears of him to investigate what her husband was up to the last few years on his own. What kind of man he truly was, what company he kept, if he's even really dead.
- She does this all because of her devotion to her family, her culture, and a strong urge to see her children again.

Personality
- Stubborn, grim, untrusting.
- Showing strong dwarven upbringing - steadfast, resolute, proud.
- Still dealing with the grief of her dead husband.
- Very maternal - she may be slow to trust, but she takes care of her allies.

---------- Post added at 10:28 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:22 AM ----------

1. How trusting are you?
"Why do you ask? Have something to hide? *wry smirk* Not very... I'll give you a chance, but I've got my eye on you."

2. How do you react when faced by setbacks?
"I never thought this was going to be easy or fast. Setbacks are annoying, but inevitable."

3. How assertive are you when it comes to making a decision? Will you take charge or let others lead?
"Depends on whether they're leading me somewhere I want to go. My father would say getting me to change my mind is like trying to move the mountains, but I think I'm a little more flexible than that."

4. Somebody plays a joke on you. What's your first reaction?
"Remind them that no one should make a fool of a Stormfist warrior without making sure their posthumous affairs are in order."

5. You find yourself in a bad situation but find an escape route. However, this will leave others to their fates. What do you do?
"Like I said, I never thought this would be easy. And what good is restoring our sterling reputation if we are thought of as cowards?"

About time bitches! Any backstory content done yet Shawn?

"Chapter 1" subquest stories are done and will focus on 2 members of the party. Lots of possible outcomes. "Chapter 2" will focus on 2 new members and one of the original two will get some progression and so forth. Did I mention your decisions will affect the storyline?

So if I understoof this correctly, you guys are all part of Falagar's music troupe? Sound like fun!

Oh wait, we're setting up how we meet? And we've actually decided it's listening to me in a bar?

Shit. *writes a story to tell*

D&D Jay's Game - Things to Do By Thursday

Jay said he wanted us to have it figured out so we weren't dawdling at the beginning; that we could just get shit started. I suggested the easiest way would be for us to be among those listening to Falagar tell a tall tale. What else are you gonna do on a blizzard night but drink something alcoholic, chat with some strangers, and listen to a guy dressed in purple and gold? Some of us may get chatty with each other, some more than others. Tyrdin would be unlikely to chat a ton right away, but he'd listen, nod, and maybe get into a trade discussion with Helga. Not all of us need to be chummy with each other right away, as long as we establish some strings of conversation. We could even just comment on Falagar.

"This guy's a genius."
"He's an idiot."
"Well, I think he's an idiotic genius."

Crap, I gotta figure out a voice for Tyrdin.

Heh. This is actually kind of fun. I'm writing a short story (will probably write more) for Falagar to tell periodically. I'm purposefully adding holes in the story or misused words or grammar. Heh. I'll also provide you guys an OOC bonus of what really happened.

I wanna see Shawn's shit but he's been suspiciously absent.

I just recorded myself telling the story. I hate my voice so. much. I just can't convey what I want.

Anyway, since I probably won't say this whole thing over Vent, here's the recording (about 4 minutes): 1 Twin Rats.mp3

--
And, here's the written version if you want. Following that is what the bonus what "really" happened.

So, you wish to hear a tale of Falagar the Great? Well, I suppose I could spin a yarn—for a pint of course.

Now let’s seeee… Which one of my grand adventures should I tell…

*sees Bloby crawling around / sneeze*

Ah, how about how I found my good friend and faithful travel companion Bloby, here?

Alright… It was a dark and stormy night. Lightning crackled in the sky and the rain was coming down in torrents. The roads were wet and sludgy. My trusty steed could barely see, let alone walk in that muck. But we pressed onward, determined to get our last haul of Dragonflies— little winged serpents, nasty buggers— to the town of Knoxwater, a quaint little village whose entire way of life revolved around the fishing trade. The Dragonflies loved to eat their little fishies, you see, so they hired me. I don’t normally go for such small game, but I thought to myself, “Falagar, these people will die if you don’t help them!” so I agreed to help. My reputation had proceded me, it seemed, and the village offered me a grand reward, but I took one look at their paltry living and cut the reward in half.

Er, wait. I’m getting into a whole different story. That’s a story for another time, and another free pint.

So, back to the stormy night. …. THUNDER BOOMED AND LIGHTNING STREAKED THE SKY! My horse could barely continue any further when I saw glowing lights in the distance. I squinted to see through the darkness and the rain splattering in my eyes. Could they be the glowing eyes of the dreaded Mage Bear? *pause* Ha ha ha, no my friends, it wasn’t--- but I do have a story about that one as well.

As we drew closer, I discovered it to be a little hovel of a shack by the name of the Twin Rats Tavern. As we neared, the door slammed open with a loud bang that echoed with the thunder! A woman fell out, shrieking for help. I dismounted my horse, grabbing her by the shoulders to steady her. She looked in shambles, face smudged and hair now matted by the rain. I said, “Now miss, what seems to be the matter? Please, calmly tell me what’s wrong.”

She stammered and stumbled over her words, but managed to point into the tavern. I could make out the words “monster” and “attack.”

Without another stammered word, I sprung into action! I dropped the woman and ran into the building, tome ready! “Where is this beast!?” I shouted.

The bartender, a sniveling wisp of a man, shakily pointed to the basement door. “We’ve been asieged by monstrous ooze! It’s been attacking our patrons and destroying our wares! Please, save us, Falagar!”

“An ooze?” I said, with a cock of my brow, “Groovy.”

As I shut the cellar door behind me, I immediately knew that it was a trap. The stairs beneath me collapsed into a smooth ramp, and I slid down for what seemed like minutes. As I saw the end rushing towards me, I prepared myself and did a spring-step roll to my feet. They can’t get the drop on ol’ Falagar.

And that’s when I saw it. At the cellar’s back wall—the snarling, raging behemoth of a monster ooze. It must have been as big as the basement itself, and it wasted no time in noticing me. It lashed out with its burning acidic appendage. I rolled out of the way and took cover behind a wine barrel. I had to act fast—if this thing got a hold of me, I was a goner! And then it hit me—the barrel! Acting quickly, I punctured a hole in the wine cask, upended it, and shoved it towards the beast. The monster took the bait perfectly, and consumed the barrel that would end up being his undoing.

That’s when I striked. Raising my tome into the air, I called out—that’s right, baby. “SCORCHING BURST!” The creature was consumed in my flames, along with the trail of wine that lead right to the barrel in its belly. KAFOOM! The barrel exploded, tearing the ooze apart with it. Smoldering bits of slime went everywhere. As I dusted myself off, I surveyed my work. “You won’t be hurting anyone today, monster,” I said.

Heading back upstairs, I was praised as a hero. The barmaid from before was especially appreciative. They asked to sketch me for their wall, so naturally I posed for them. As they placed my image on their wall to commemorate their safety, I decided to take my leave before they tried to keep me forever, ha ha…

Upon placing my hand in my pocket, however, I felt a strange tingling. Pulling it out, there was a small piece of the ooze I had destroyed! Still wiggling about and trying to destroy everything, but too small and harmless to do any damage. I decided to keep the little guy. I stepped out into the fresh evening air and continued on my way. It was a long hike in front of me, but with the gorgeous sunset in front of me and my new friend, I knew t would be okay.

Now, we’re best friends and inseparable companions.

What really happened:

Falagar was trekking down a dirt road on a sleepy summer morning on foot. What he was trailing behind him was an empty net, from his failed attempt to capture the Dragonflies. While his description of the town was fairly accurate, he definitely didn’t cut their already-meager reward offer down, and even tried to boost it a bit, citing his fame.

As he approached the lone tavern, a woman came out, saying, “May I help you?” (Not shrieking, so much.)

After a few drinks, but no one to tell his stories to, Falagar mentioned that he was a monster hunter.
“Oh really?” the old barkeep said. “Well, we could use one a them. There’s this ooze in the cellar that keeps eating through our barrels. We’ve tried to catch it, but it keeps slipping away and we don’t want to get burned. Think you can help?”

Of course Falagar accepted this challenge, and immediately set to the basement. Upon stepping in, however, one of the steps beneath his feet crumbled, causing him to lose his step and begin tumbling down the stairs, landing him on his face.

It was dark and Falagar could barely see a thing, so he grabbed a torch off its sconce and began hunting around the barrels.

He yawned. After a few minutes he was about to give up and head back upstairs, when suddenly a slimy ooze blob plopped in front of him from the ceiling. He yelped and stumbled back, accidentally knocking one of the barrels’ spouts lose, spewing harsh-smelling alcohol all throughout the floor, surrounding the little ooze in front of him. Of course, he also happened to drop the torch in his surprise, so guess what happened. FWOOM! Instant basement fire, along with an ooze that was starting to look like a smoldering marshmallow.

Falagar escaped the fire as best he could, putting out little embers on his robes, and stood back, watching as the fire caught more barrels on fire, sizzling and spilling their contents. One of the barrels contained wine, which eventually poured out and put most of the fire out.

As he stepped closer to the charred-but-wet ooze remains, he saw a tiny little ooze scooting around the corner, scared and attempting to escape the heat. Falagar took pity on it and decided to keep it as a pet, since it didn’t seem to burn him much.

As he went upstairs, the barkeep surveyed his work and through a fit, making the barmaid pin him down while he sketched Falagar’s face and put it on the wall with a “NOT ALLOWED IN BAR” written in huge letters under it. After that, they kicked him out, for him to continue his long walk to wherever he was headed.

I want to mention to Shawn that his background is conferring no benefit currently.

D&D Jay's Game - Things to Do By Thursday

Doom... you're brilliant and I love your character, even though I'm not sure he and Tyrdin will get along greatly, I can't wait to hear more of him. I'm gonna paste that to the beginning of the session recording whenever tavern roleplay begins :p. Awesome job. Julie and I were laughing the whole way through (and at the real version).

Geez, I feel like I need to spice up Ratkor a little bit now.

Interesting note... as I worked some puzzles around the party's character decisions.... for extra languages... one speaks dwarven, one giant and 3 elven.

D&D Jay's Game - Things to Do By Thursday

should we try and diversify our languages better?

D&D Jay's Game - Things to Do By Thursday

Nope, it's up to the party. I just don't know if that's what everyone wants. Just giving more information. Here's more. People trained in skills:

Acrobatics: 1
Arcana: 2
Athletics: 1
Bluff: 3
Diplomacy: 2
Dungeon: 1
Endurance: 3
Heal: 0
History: 1
Insight: 0
Intimidate: 2
Nature: 1
Perception: 0
Religion: 0
Stealth: 1
Streetwise: 1
Thievery: 1

D&D Jay's Game - Things to Do By Thursday

I can't really change anything about my character right now. Common and Dwarven are my languages with no flexibility, and until I eventually take a Barbarian multiclass, I'll only have three skill trains, and those are pretyy locked at Athletics, Endurance, and Intimidate. Very in-character, very battlerager.

D&D Jay's Game - First Session Next Thursday

I could change Elven, it's not so important which of the languages the voices spoke to Tyrdin that he understands. His skills are set for the character though :/. Good gods, none of us know Insight or Perception. Where's Adia when you need her?

May tweak my character sheet still before the game; I'm still trying to settle if I want telepathy or telekinesis, and if I take a certain Ardent mantle, everyone gets additional +2 to Perception and Insight if they're in 5 squares of me.

D&D Jay's Game - First Session Next Thursday

Yep, no one with Perception or Insight. I'm going to f___ you guys up. :)

D&D Jay's Game - First Session Next Thursday

I'll probably pick up Perception with my eventual multiclass feat skill training. I wouldn't worry about retraining too much now until it is PROVEN to be a problem. ;)

But thanks Shawn. :)

D&D Jay's Game - First Session Next Thursday

Endurance, I suppose I took knowing we'd be in the north, so it was Meta anyway.

I will take Insight in its place. Mantle of Clarity was already there (+2 for everyone's Insight, Perception within 5 squares of me).

Not sending the new sheet until I decide for certain between telepathy and telekinesis.

D&D Jay's Game - First Session Next Thursday

I wouldn't worry about retraining too much now until it is PROVEN to be a problem. ;)
Sounds like a challenge!

Don't worry it'll be met. Perception can... and will play a huge part of the game... surprise/ambushes (with no insight guy? ouch) are always possible, hidden stashes of loot you'll miss, dangerous, life changing traps.... oh! there shall be traps. Avoiding reapers from harvesting your souls.

Falagar's insight and perception are low, because, well, he's not very observant. Missing stuff like that is half his point.

It is funny that perception / insight rarely come up in the other games as very importatnt, and here it'll probably kill us.

Oh well, seems it's taken care of.

D&D Jay's Game - First Session Next Thursday

Insight's been very important in my game; just that no one's using it. So they keep falling into tricks, lies, and traps.

Julie basically abuses Shawn's game. "I see ALLLLLLL..."

Now that I've lost Endurance though, if I collapse in the snow, don't leave me to die, 'kay?

D&D Jay's Game - First Session Next Thursday

I'll be making most use of all skills in my game. In fact, you'll be surprised how the use of them can change things for you guys. Perception and Insight are huge, having NO one with training in them will make things interesting. :)
Just because one DM doesn't make use of them it won't mean another DM won't. Either way, you'll get the flow the game after a couple of sessions.

Rathkor wants to let you know he changed his background to Alagrond, untrained Diplomacy, and trained Perception.

So now...

The only one left with Diplomacy...

is Falagar.
