BBC News - Fat-fingered sumo wrestlers given iPads

This is interesting. They are replacing mobile phones with iPad for Sumo wrestlers. I know that iPad DOES NOT have phone function (cause my wife has one) and you CAN get 3G service on it (30$ monthly for most people give or take with certain plans) but how is that replacing phone?

I know you can send and receive email, but these wrestlers will still need to use a phone for voice UNLESS

1. There might be a phone feature in the future (I wish)
2. front camera for the iPad and allow video conferencing via wi-fi.

E-mail also has the added advantage of leaving a paper trail for investigators.
Many Japanese newspapers also reported that the iPad had been chosen because of its large touch-screen keys that can be easily prodded by the giant wrestlers.
"When they try to send e-mail on mobile phones or PCs they often end up pressing two or three keys at once," said the daily Nikkan Sports.

Sounds like they are just replacing mobile phones for email, not making phone calls.
