Clarence B. Jones: Martin Luther King, Jr. and Glenn Beck's 'Restoration of Honor' Rally

Beck is having a major "March on Washington" on the 47'th anniversary of the "March on Washington" and Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a dream..." speech.

Some points I've heard...

He wants to restore the honor of America. Also take the lead in civil rights.

And Palin will be a major speaker at the rally.

Sounds high minded, but recent history with those two has me worried about this being a farce of the memory of MLK.

Something tells me that this restoring the honor of America thing is very different coming from MLK or from Palin.

It is. MLK's views on accessible health care and social mobility would be considered socialist by the standards of Beck and the rest of Fox News. Conservatives have been trying to claim MLK as one of their own for a while now when a lot of stuff that he wrote and spoke about would be considered left of center in America even by today's standards.

Stuff that MLK Jr was in favor of: Guaranteed annual income, redistribution of property and wealth, that it is the responsibility of the government to help the poor, and social justice. He regularly used those exact terms that conservatives hate so much.

He wasn't a communist, but he was definitely a socialist by today's standards.

MLK Jr said:
My reading of Marx also convinced me that truth is found neither in Marxism nor in traditional capitalism. Each represents a partial truth. Historically capitalism failed to see the truth in collective enterprise, and Marxism failed to see the truth in individual enterprise. Nineteenth century capitalism failed to see that life is social and Marxism failed and still fails to see that life is individual and personal. The Kingdom of God is neither the thesis of individual enterprise nor the antithesis of collective enterprise, but a synthesis which reconciles the truths of both.

Glenn Beck is a real life cartoon character. Fox News even knows what a tool he is. After all they are Fox; they know how much money cartoons (The Simpsons) bring in.

Ugh... Guess I'll have to thank Glenn Beck for helping me in my weight loss project. Because reading those articles just made me lose my apetite - and almost lose my lunch.

What is truly awful isn't how ridiculous Glenn Beck is. We've dealt with crazy people before. It's that his crazy is gaining momentum.

Oh, and Glenn is expecting around 300,000 people. O'Reilly said if he gets 100,000 he'll quit his job.
