I say too fucking bad


Scottish guy born outside canada has son born outside canada and is upset son is not canadian. Seems like such an international guy would be aware of the laws in affect, and even if not, why assume such an important thing like that? NEVER ASSUME!

Not hearthless, it makes sense. Kind of tired of all the work we put into 'helping Canadians' abroad, who have never been to Canada! It's a ridiculous system that I'm glad they've closed the loophole on.

I'm sick of parents coming to the U.S. and getting legal status with their 1-month old children not getting legal status, not doing anything to get them status, and then their kids turn 18 and get deported to Mexico.

Psssh, I can trace some of my white lineage back to the 16th century in the land that eventually became known to be Canada, and that's not counting my native side. I'm as Canadian as a white guy can be! CAN BE! CAAAN BEE!!

Yeah, he's a real crybaby. It looks like he did know the law, but the law was changed without much public notice.

It sounds like the law was changed without a lot of forethought, but there seem to be options - that Permanent Residence path may not be easy, but it does appear to be an option.

I don't really know what to think. I don't even know what the law is for Americans born abroad, not on a military base like John McCain.

We have the Child Protection Act. If your parents were citizens before you turned 18, you may be entitled to citizenship.

Do you mean the Child Status Protection Act? Because "Child Protection Act" usually means the 1988 and 1998 laws about porn.

We have some "remote citizenship" thing going on in Spain, though if I'm not mistaken, it was designed for the descendants of spanish people who left because of our civil war (or it's outcome).

I believe you are correct. Generally speaking, as long as you are ether the spouse, child, or parent of a US citizen, your virtually guaranteed to get citizenship if you apply. It may take 6-7 years, but it's pretty easy (as far as immigration goes).
