If I were an elderly lady constantly harassed by a twelve year old shit, I might've shot him too.
So half the neighborhood is saying he'd never do anything like that, and the other half says he's a little hellion. The police have taken him and his toadies in a number of times. I wonder which half of the neighborhood is right, the ones with broken windows, or the boy's grandma's knitting circle.

I would think threatening him with a BB gun would be an effective deterrent, but actually pulling out a REAL gun and shooting him is going too far.
That's usually what I would do. But this is an old lady who's on her own, terrorized on a daily basis by a gang of punks. Not only has she called the police several times, to no avail, but her neighbors also suffered from their antics. Combine her state of fear and general hopelessness that the situation wouldn't be resolved, and what do you get? A cornered animal.

TRUE. and I sympathize.. I've had similar dealings with an asshole in the parking lot where I work.. but if I pull out a gun and shoot him (not that I own a gun or a weapons permit), I'M going to jail. Hindsight: Granny shoulda come after him with a bat, not a gun.
Throw a brick at me, on my property, I'll shoot your ass. And damned few DA's would bring me up on charges.

I stay away from Chicago because the traffic is psychotic. Gun toting grammas is really the least of my worries in the windy city.

I'm finding it very difficult to sympathize for the two boys. I hope they end up in juvie instead of back on the streets.

The lady who may merely be trying to live out the rest of her life in peace, but is constantly worried for her own safety even in her home (I have no doubt she limits trips to the store and elsewhere already).
The kids who are obviously all-but-abandoned by their parents.
The community that gets to be painted with broad strokes by the public at large as dangerous.
The police that have to handcuff 12 year olds for throwing bricks, or get called in for cases of abuse and neglect.
