I'm kind of sad that the 223 pistol or as it's called, That Gun, isn't the beastly monster killer it was in 1 and 2.

Oh man, I remember that thing. Maxed perception, finesse trait, and maxed small guns. There was nothing I couldn't snipe between the eyes from max distance and instakill.

Good times.

Expect a mod to fix that.

On Hardcore mode, they get a lot less badass due to the actually dying. That, combined with the whole AI thinking it can outshoot a Deathclaw with a sniper rifle from 2 feet away thing... Yeah.

They got Deathclaws right this game. In 3, they were tough, but not the monstrosities from 1 and 2. This one? My strategy consists of "drop a frag mine and run my ass off, hoping it cripples their legs so they don't bitchslap me through a mountain." God help you if you get attacked by 2 or 3 of them.
Plasma rifles make them your bitch though.

And yes, the AI NPCs aren't smart when it comes to survivability. Though Boone is a fucken aimbot of aimbots.

Hm... I'll try that out. Made
convincing the Great Khans to not support the Legion
kind of difficult, having to go through the Quarry. Deathclaw Central...

And Boone doesn't aim like aimbots. Aimbots aim like Boone. (Yes, Boone is one of my favorite characters.)

Well things were going fine for me up until the other day. I tried to play for a bit and ended up just giving up. Every time I would load up a save my guy would shoot as soon as the game came up. After that, it wouldn't let me put the gun away, open my pipboy or VATS. Frustrated, I went back a couple saves played a bit and eventually just gave up as when I would enter a door the loading screen would never go away. Glad I only rented, again PS3 version if anyone is wondering.

Should have played for about 4 hours, ended up only getting about twenty minutes total.

And yes, the worst part is that when I can play, its glorious.

I bought Fallout 3 on release. I normally wouldn't have but I had just got back from a very long, arduous trip, the purpose of which was to attend my Grandmother's funeral, during which I caught some nasty throat infection meaning I'd get a few days with the thing. Never had a single problem with that one, not that I can recall anyway, certainly nothing like this. That was a 360 version.

Good god, Caravan is fun once you get the hang of it. I've spent the better part of two hours playing just that.

There's a few mods I've downloaded that change how the game stores and retrieves textures and the like which have improved my game noticeably. Not greatly mind you, but in large battles it not longer super stutters.

I've been getting some framrate drops which boggles my mind considering my system specs.
There's a fan made .dll patch that supposedly greatly improves frame rates. It has something to do with overriding the sloppy code they used to detect the video cards. I'm going to try it out this weekend on the recommendation of a few friends.

Yeah, I use that .dll. It tricks it into thinking I'm running a 7000 series Geforce card. I lose some DX10 lighting effects but otherwise the game runs like a God damn dream now.

Now that I'm pretty far into the game, I can admit this; this game has it's claws sunk deep into me. This game is Fallout. It feels so much more like Fallout than 3 ever did. I also like the shear amount of different voice actors hired for the game. Unlike Bethesda's usual 4 people can do the voices of an entire world, the cast list for New Vegas is obscenely massive. Beyond the glitches, the game is just amazing.

You know, now that I've had a good long while to play the game, I have made my final verdict on it.

It's fan-fucking-tastic.

Even with all the problems, even with taking me 48 hours to get the goddamn thing installed, even with it crashing every few hours and running at a poor framerate at times (puzzling given my system) I can still say that the game itself is amazing.

If Obsidian could make a game this good -without- all the technical flaws, people would be lining up to throw money at them. Someone get them a goddamn technical team.

I am just loving this game too... head shotting deathclaws with a gauss rifle is so very entertaining. The story has sucked me in too... and all the different paths you can take are keeping me plenty busy.

Well, Steam says I've put... four full days into this game. I'd say about a third of that was the computer idling, but still.

Definitely felt more like Fallout than Fallout 3 did. And since I never had any major issues with bugs or crashes (aside from one or two a day) this definitely has a spot on my top 10 list.

Absolutely fantastic game. Totally recommend it for anyone that's uncertain.

My son bought this game for me yesterday as an early Christmas/late birthday gift. I'm going to load it tonight.

The latest patch seems to have cleared up the stuttering and frame rate problems I was having. The game is running very smoothly now and even when there is a fair amount of action going on it remains playable instead of chunking down to a slide show. Not bad :)

Dave, I think you're giong to have fun... :D

Yeah, the latest patch has made it so it won't open at all for me. Just immediately crashes.

It's super awesome.

SUPER NEAT, I can't even uninstall it now either.

My controls will randomly change and sometimes make it so that I can't loot anything or look down the sights.

But when it works it's glorious.

*facepalm*

You know... I wonder how they can manage to make a patch that makes the game run so well on one system and is completely unplayable on another... talent? ;)

I had to reboot my PC, delete all my ini files, then re-verify my files in Steam to get it working again.

On the positive side, it runs much, much, much, much, much, much, much better now.

I got Fallout New Vegas on release day, and I have not had the problems that most people seem to be having with it. I do have a beast of a computer though, so that may have something to do with it. When the patches came out, it seemed to have broken the games even further, to the annoyance of people who were having problems to begin with. The thread on the SA forums ranges from "God this game is amazing." to "God, why is this game a buggy piece of shit?" within the span of two or three posts. We have one of the developers who posts pretty readily in the thread, by the handle of ropekid, and he assures us that they're working on patches as fast as they can. I know, everyone shits on Gamebryo, but Bethseda owns the license now, and they commanded Obsidian that the game use that stupid buggy engine. Soon there will be mods that take care of the buggy stuff from the Nexus community, and the game will be even better. Really the only advice I can give if you're having problems is to use the .dll workaround and avoid quick saving the game. That seems to have been the majority of the issue.

That said, please don't give up on this game. It says something for the writing and the gameplay that even when the game bugs to hell, you still want to play it. I am making my fourth run through now, just exploring the Mojave and looking for all the little side quests I missed on the last play throughs. I love the little quirks and quests, and I still haven't gotten around to starting up Wild Wasteland. I've gotten to where I only carry a balance of food and water, and Boone and Rex carry extra ammo for me. Hardcore mode was a pleasant surprise, as was the reloading stations. Being the huge Fallout nerd I am, I immediately cheered at the renewal of the now-defunct Van Buren story line. I can only hope the DLC is as good as FO3's.

If the DLC is like Fallout 3's I will skip it entirely. I hope it's better.
None of the DLC for Fallout 3 was especially bad... it just usually ran counter to what the game was supposed play like or didn't give sufficient rewards..

- Operation Anchorage: Railroaded, but nice viewpoint of what the Final War was like. Plus it had some VERY nice prizes.

- The Pitt: Railroaded, but an interesting story that really had no positive/negative paths. Nice reward and the scavenging game was kinda fun, even if the rewards weren't worth it post-arena.

- Broken Steel: No railroading, lots to do, and it expanded the main game. It SHOULD have been free though, considering how badly they botched the ending in the first place.

- Point Lookout: Tons of stuff to do, fun storyline, lots of new enemies and a nice big map to explore. Too bad everything you can get there is basically worthless unless you go very early in the game.

- Mothership Zeta: Totally railroaded but the rewards are excellent and it had some pretty cool moments. Very useful if you plan to use the Firelance or Alien Blaster during the main game.

So really, the main problems seemed to be railroading or insufficient rewards. It's STILL better than fucking Horse Armor though.

It wasn't bad, I never said it was bad. I just didn't think they were especially good. Not really worth the time or money.

And Horse armor was truly the worst DLC of all time (save for when EA tried to charge people money for cheat codes for the Godfather game and pretty much anything Namco has done with DLC).

Just finished the first New Vegas DLC, Dead Money... and I'm completely blown away by it. This is better than anything they put out for Fallout 3. Here's a few quick thoughts...

-It's got a great, engaging story (featuring a character mentioned in the main game, Elijah) that has a lot of interesting backstory to pick up if you look around the area. Won't give any plot spoilers but this is better writing than most of the main game. Pick it up, if only for the story.

- I'd say this is a 6 hour DLC at minimum, though I think I spent more like 10-12 doing it. Lots of value here.

- Fully fleshed out and engaging character NPCs, each with a special ability that can REALLY help out in the Sierra Madrea. Each character has their own storyline in the DLC which unfolds naturally over the story and isn't a forgone conclusion like the Fallout 3 DLCs.

- Very atmospheric and scary environment, with traps and poisonous gas clouds every. The enemies are nearly silent and strike from out of nowhere... and they don't stay down when you kill them (unless you REALLY kill them).

- The tone of the DLC completely changes the way the game plays. Your a prisoner and you have to do what your told or you will die... as will everyone else under the madman's control. You have no idea who you can trust. You will have to scrounge up casino chips and weapons if you want to survive (and this NEVER gets easier). Broken radios and speakers will trigger your collar and blow you up. Poisonous clouds envelop damn near everything, blocking your path. Worse, previous prisoners and the local population have left traps EVERYWHERE to kill you. Dead Money really throws you to the wolves and it never lets up until after your done.

- Lots of great, new items. The Cosmic Knife (think Ginsu Knives) and all it's variants are very powerful melee weapons, the Automatic Rifle is a fun way to use up your sniper ammo, Gas bombs are fiery death with lots of explosives skill and/or Pyromaniac, and the Holorifle does a damage type no one resists in the game (though you need to upgrade it to make it useful). The Sierra Madrea Martini is a powerful, useful, cheap healing item as well.

- This is my favorite part: They actually talk about the upcoming DLCs IN THE GAME. First off is The Big Empty, which looks like it'll be a scavenger hunt in a high tech wasteland. After that is The Divide... which sounds like it's going to be a post game DLC involving a war with forces east of New Vegas, which are being lead by another Mojave Courier (perhaps the one mentioned by Mr. Nash in Primm? He talks about The Divide too!). Coupled with the mentioned Lonesome Road (Route 50, which stretches from California to Washington, DC), which is likely to concern Fallout 3 crossovers, I think we have all the future DLC accounted for.

I highly recommend getting this DLC if you have the 360 version, despite the bugs New Vegas currently has. It's awesome and well worth the 800 points/$10 cost.

Shame there's no PC version. I'm stuck with an unstable POS that at best plays for an hour before randomly crashes. I did squeeze 2 hours once, felt great... then it hard locked my system and my system NEVER hard locks.

I've only had two crashes and one bug in the entire time I've played... and none of those happened during Dead Money. As for a PC version... it'll happen, eventually. I think they are making in 360 exclusive so people will actually buy it, instead of pirating it for the PC. That doesn't mean it won't hit PCs eventually... after all, it took them something like a year to get it on the PS3?
