Google: Pumping silicon

In very rough terms (according to my own back-of-the-napkin-calculations):

Google employs about 65 million million transistors.

That's about ten thousands transistors for each man, woman, and child on this planet.

In the time it takes you to read this one sentence, Google will have completed about 8 million billion 32 bit operations in those transistors.

That's enough to calculate 200 thousand digits of pi for each person on this planet.

Also: if the word hate was engraved on each nanoangstrom of those millions of millions of transistors it would not equal one-billionth of the hate that the google overmind feels for humans at this micro-instant. For you. Hate. HATE.

And yet, for all it's computational power Google is little more than a pocket calculator when compared to the Walmart computer system.

My dad did some DB work there, consulting for a bit. I'm not sure that walmart has more than a half million computers at their disposal, even including all the registers, scanners, etc. I'd be interested in finding out, though - do you have any additional information?

I watched a documentary on it about a year ago. While the computational power of Walmart was known to the film producers, they also had a bit with the American military. While the military would not confirm what computational power they had, they did confirm that Walmart had the most powerful civilian system and the second most powerful system in the world. It's capable of real time weather analysis and inventory management

IE: Walmart senses that a tornado is forming somewhere in the USA, products typically needed in a tornado situation (water, plywood, dry goods) are automatically redirected from shipments already in transit to the expected tornado location.

If walmart turns out to be skynet that would be pleasantly ironic.

This belongs in the all caps thread but...

ROB LIEFELD DOES NOT FUCKING RULE!! *RAAAAAAAAAAGE*

....

....well played, sir.

Bastard.

ha I keep my soul in a secured location separate from my body. Good luck.

Oh, I know, makare. I know.

Does this sound familiar to you: middle of the Arizona desert, fifty feet south of the armadillo carcass, and directly between two cactus; one short, one tall. Flat shale rock shaped like a ladybug with an X etched in crayon on its underside. Titanium poster carrier with "Makare" written on it, with M as a capital letter to throw people off.

Oh yes. I know.

You just described the time capsule I buried in my backyard when I was six.
