So what can they possibly do in the sequel to the Pixar blockbuster "Cars"? Simple! How's about a SPY THRILLER?!?

Call me kooky, but I LOVE the direction change!

The less the focus on NASCAR, the better.
This.

So they are essentially doing Spies Like Us, but with anthropomorphic cars? That sounds like an awful idea. Can we just skip this one and do Brave instead? That actually sounds interesting.

I liked it before Disney bought PIXAR and decided to pimp it on the corner. PIXAR studios used to absolutely refuse to do sequels, and Cars 2 is an example of why they were right.

I don't know, Chaz. That seemed amusing enough. I might give it a chance. I just hope there's gonna be more than just Lightning McQueen and Mater present from the original cast. Call me silly, but I enjoyed the two Italian cars, not to mention Doc.

Well, we know Doc won't be back, what with being dead and all. If he is, it won't be the same Doc we knew before. We'll see what happens. I thought the original Cars was going to be stupid, that Ratatouille sounded dumb, but I was proven wrong on both counts, and by quite a bit. So I'm willing to see what they present.

And if it sucks tailpipe, I'm gonna blame Disney anyway.

You do realize that John Lassiter is the guy in charge of all Disney Animation, don't you? Pixar did Toy Story 2 before the merge, 7 years before.

Why is everyone assuming Disney is forcing Pixar to make this sequel?

It made a shit ton of cash from merchandising.

Guess what other Pixar movie did the same? Toy Story.

They aren't allergic to money over there.

Not gonna see it in theatres, but I'll check it out on DVD. Yay for Michael Caine.

The Toy Story sequels prove that Pixar still knows what they're doing. Even though Cars is probably near the bottom of my list of Pixar movies, it's still great. Not sure if I'll see this in theatres, but definitely be checking it out.

By this point Pixar has earned enough of my trust that I will assume they have a really good reason for doing this movie. The last four pixar movie trailers didn't impress me, but the movies sure as hell did.

I think that Pixar is really working at putting out trailers that don't give the whole movie away, like some trailers do. They give a glimpse of the movie, but don't spoil it. I'll see this, I already know I will, because Pixar hasn't disappointed me yet, and I don't see it happening here.

They did Toy Story 2 because Disney told them they would be doing it with or without them and the folks at Pixar thought it was more important to protect their name and work than it was to uphold their ideals. They never had any intention to do a sequel to Toy Story until Disney forced their hand. Hell... Disney was originally going to make Toy Story 2 as a shoddily animated, direct to video release...

Actually, the only reason they are doing Cars 2 IS for the money. WALL-E and UP did well critically and in the box office but what little merchandising they had really didn't sell, so they needed to do a money project. This is why Cars is getting a sequel, despite it being the lowest rated (admittedly, that's still in the 70's...) and generally considered worst of their movies, it's merchandise sold like hotcakes YEARS after the movie had been released on video.

John Lasseter on Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 2 | Cinefantastique Online

Shortly after TOY STORY debuted in 1995, there was almost immediately talk of a sequel to the first-ever CGI feature film, but the creative staff at Pixar initially resisted the idea. “Making a sequel was the last thing we wanted to do,” explains Lee Unkrich, the director of TOY STORY 3. “We felt there were other stories to tell so why make a movie with the same characters when there’s a whole uncharted territory of other stories and new characters. But we saw the big impact TOY STORY has had on the culture. It’s really lasted and we finally realized we had a great thing on our hands. We had all these great characters the world had embraced, and we thought it would be sad if they only got to live in one 90-minute movie. So after some time had gone by, we thought “we enjoyed creating these characters, we really liked them, why not try and give them a great adventure that would be a worthy follow-up to TOY STORY’.”
They didn't want to do a sequel, and you can bet that his answer as to why they went for one is bullshit. They were pressured into doing Toy Story 2 by the higher ups. Anyway, Toy Story is the only exception. The major driving force for so many PIXAR sequels IS because of the merger with Disney.

Disney is notorious for cranking out unnecessary sequels. It's their bread and butter because children don't care about story, they care about their favorite characters. ALL of PIXAR's movies up to the merger were meant to be stand alone films. And you know what? It worked! Cars doesn't need a sequel anymore than up does. The story was finished.

Cars 2 will be exactly what some people mentioned. It's going to be a full feature "Mater and Friends" spin off.
