You have to shoot through open windows or over walls still. It is a grenade that will detonate so many milliseconds after firing, after figuring that information out from the laser rangefinder and weather monitor.

With that kind of firepower, home (sheetrocks and such) won't provide much cover unless the walls are really thick.

It is actually less powerful than the system it replaces. The difference is how you shoot it and how accurate it is. This one fires just like a rifle with extra, video game, wizzbangery. The other was more of a wing and a prayer that you hit what you were generally aiming at.

Those style of grenades will normally detonate on impact. The old 40mm ones you hoped you could lob one into the window, and hit something solid enough to trigger it, or that the round did not fly out the other side of the building.

It's the logical extension of variable-time fuses that have been in use on artillery for a good couple-hundred years now. Smaller-scale, and using a laser rangefinder to program fuse time, but still nothing overly innovative.

Doesn't detract from the fact that it is EXCEEDINGLY cool, to say nothing of being a USEFUL toy, for a change. *grins*

Woo!! our Forum officer approves! ;)

Wasn't something like this planned to be integrated into the old OICW system? I know I've seen videos of something like this at least 7-8 years ago.

Also, I now want to see somebody make this useful.

That's exactly what it is. XM29 OICW - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's a scaled-down XM29 with no underslung XM8 assault rifle. I remember that they decided that the original version of the weapon worked perfectly, but was too expensive to be practical (every individual round cost cost between $50-$100 at the time, and the weapon itself cleared $50k).

Yes Ash that is the only part of the OICW that made it into production. I think soon a .50 cal BMG will come out of that system with half the rate of fire and half the weight.

I can't wait to see this...

Mk 47 Striker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

in action.

A crew served 40mm fully auto grenade launcher with the same tech as the xm25.

Meh... I'm still wondering when we'll get the Metal Storm launchers installed onto our tanks.

That is a lot grenade in a short period of time (12x4x2= 96 grenades in matter of seconds)

Metal storm struck me as some thing to add to a base as a sentry weapon. Engage a booby trap, and have all hell rain down on you. Or, as a point defense weapon for a ship, like the CIWS. I think it is too fragile to be used on a tank. Well, it could be used to increase the number of smoke canisters that tanks use.

I honestly expected the bullet version of Metal Storm to be used on tanks or helicopters as a sort of Mini-Aegis system to fight off enemy rocket attacks. It's compact, houses a lot of bullets, and can fire off those rounds in the blink of an eye. It would actually make point defense systems viable on vehicles.
