Why do things when you can get other people to do them for you?

Just sayin.

Baer, I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm even more sorry that you were so far away. :(

Little Sin, I can sympathize. For the longest time I didn't think I would get anywhere, but you will. That doctor sounds very unhelpful. I'm surprised that they put so much emphasis on cardio. Exercise is important, but did he/she ask you anything about your diet or how/if you track what you eat every day? I might have missed that; I'm not in a very sharp state right now. Well, anyway, it is a long and frustrating road, but don't give up. :) I know you will achieve your goals.

Seeing Cajun's reply to you, LS, reminded me that I wanted to add something about your diet. Make sure that you are eating enough. I know that sounds like the opposite of what you should do when you're trying to lose weight. However, if you are not taking in enough calories weight loss will be harder. Your body will think it needs to hold onto every bit of energy and not burn as much even when you're working out. You may want to ask your doctor about a referral to a nutritionist or dietitian. If she is is still as unenthusiastic about helping you, maybe you should try to see someone else.

Yeah when you eat too little your metabolism slows and starts eating away muscle and other things instead of fat because it gets put into starvation mode. The healthy way is to eat 500 less calories than what the calories needed to maintain your weight is. First start keeping a food diary and record everything you eat and how many calories it has. You will be surprised at how many things that seem healthy may end up having a ton of calories that will quickly add up if you are not careful. Drinks are especially bad at this, even fruit juice can have as many calories in a glass as you might have in a meal. Anyway Little Sin keep plugging along with your workout routine and I hope you see some results soon.

My cousin just got arrested on a warrant stemming from traffic tickets. When they picked her up, she was in possession of heroin. She claims she was holding it for someone else. I am so disappointed, sad, and angry over this whole thing but there is nothing I can do.

Not having health insurance sucks balls and not just any balls sweaty Rush Limbaugh balls!

Grrrr.

I have to finish a 1500 word long article for an online magazine and I can't seem to get past 1230!
...it's due tomorrow :Leyla:

I'm that horrible combination of lonely, stir crazy, and frustrated. It's been a bad couple days for me.

I'm sorry Gusto. For reals if you didn't live the frozen wastelands of Canada I would be taking you out for an amazing Surly beer and probably some Tots.

I know. It's nice to think of and I appreciate the thoughts. I wish more of my internet homies lived locally. I have too many unavailable friends.

I know the feeling. Most of my friends are in Texas, England, and Montana.

Which reminds me, I probably owe you something nice for accidentally introducing you to that My Immortal fanfic.

Today I read that, as a public school teacher, I'm a huge drain on this country. I'm overpaid and I'm obviously underworked, since I get 3 months off during the summer (which doesn't include holiday breaks). I'm only doing this because I couldn't get a real job, and I don't have anything to really contribute to society. My entire career field is proof that, by abusing the system and taxpayers, small people can go far when they don't deserve to.

Now, I'm not going to get upset over some crazy guy writing in to a newspaper to rant against the evils of public school teachers.

What DOES piss me off is when my own brother reads it and says, "He's got a point, though."

That's awful, Tress. Did you set him straight?
I was taken aback, and I didn't know what to say. I let him rant a little, then I told him that I expected a lot of difficulty when I became a teacher, but I never expected to be vilified. He didn't respond, and just changed the subject.

He and I never agreed on politics, which is fine, but lately a gap has been growing. He's getting more and more conservative, and he seems to take it out on me. I'm not exactly the far left, but I'm liberal enough for him to see me as a some sort of representative for whatever he dislikes.

My mom is a teacher and while she "gets summers off" she usually has to get another job to pay the bills even though she does that thing that cuts her yearly salary up into 12 parts.

People are morons when it comes to school teachers and that is the truth.

At best, teachers get July off. After kids get out in mid-June, teachers still have to grade and close out the year. That pretty much takes up the rest of the month. Most serious preparation for the year begins in the first week of August, so that month is completely taken up by work too. Getting July off is a fair exchange for spending an ungodly amount of time outside the classroom during the school year for planning and grading.

And, as you point out, many of us still work summers to pay the bills.

So yeah, I'm feeling discouraged. I'm tired of hearing that I'm some sort of incompetent leech burning taxpayer cash, all because I decided to teach at a public school.

I'm sorry you get that kind of crap from your brother in law Tress. Schoolteachers really aren't treated as they deserve in this country.

Being in love with someone who doesn't live near is so hard :(
Been there, failed at it. But I believe you'll pull it off.

C'mere, I have a big, warm, fuzzy teddy bear hug with your name on it.

I'm sorry to say this but your brother's a douchebag. And I count myself lucky to teach here in Finland; here people show at least a modicum of professional respect towards teachers, and not spewoff conservative bull excrement with a side order of anti-intellectualism.

Keep up the good work, fellow 'parasite'.

My teacher friend linked this the other day:

Are you sick of highly paid teachers?
Teachers' hefty salaries are driving up taxes, and they only work 9 or10 months a year! It's time we put things in perspective and pay them for what they do - babysit!
We can get that for less than minimum wage.

That's right. Let's give them $3.00 an hour and only the hours they worked; not any of that silly planning time, or any time they spend before or after school. That would be $19.50 a day (7:45 to 3:00 PM with 45 min. off for lunch and plan-- that equals 6 1/2 hours).

Each parent should pay $19.50 a day for these teachers to baby-sit their children. Now how many students do they teach in a day...maybe 30? So that's $19.50 x 30 = $585.00 a day.
However, remember they only work 180 days a year!!! I am not going to pay them for any vacations.
LET'S SEE....
That's $585 X 180= $105,300
per year. (Hold on! My calculator needs new batteries).

What about those special
education teachers and the ones with Master's degrees? Well, we could pay them minimum wage ($7.75), and just to be fair, round it off to $8.00 an
hour. That would be $8 X 6 1/2 hours X 30 children X 180 days = $280,800 per year.
Wait a minute -- there's
something wrong here! There sure is!
The average teacher's salary
(nation wide) is $50,000. $50,000/180 days
= $277.77/per day/30
students=$9.25/6.5 hours = $1.42 per hour per student--a very inexpensive baby-sitter and they even EDUCATE your kids!) WHAT A DEAL!!!!

People who think teachers get paid too much in the U.S. need swift fucking kick right to the balls. And those summer's off usually require you to take courses to get certifications out of the way - where you pay out of your own pocket.

But hey, it's the fucking U.S. of A. we worship dipshit actors and athletes here; not the people who give us an education. Reading things like this really pisses me off, especially when people believe that teachers have the best hours and vacation time. I've often wondered why teachers are always on the receiving end of butthurt people in regards to salary. $50k a year sucks balls for a professional career, no offense to any teacher here. Ph.D.'s don't fair much better except for a rare few, but that's a whole other kettle of fish. Take a 50k salary of a teacher for example. The same amount of time and effort that a business major would put into his/her career would give them that salary in half the amount of time a teacher spends getting there. 50k is quite high too, like Long Island, NY high. Most teachers make on average like 30-40k a year.

On another rant: people wonder why there are so many crappy teachers around. It's because all the smart, talented professionals are turned away from the horrible salaries that teachers make and the bureaucratic bullshit that involves certification.

I actually attempted to get certified in the state of PA to teach 7-12 Biology and Chemistry. Can I finish my certification? NO! One of the certification requirements is to intern for 3 months with no pay.

Tell me how are you supposed to attract professionals in the field with that stipulation? That little Ph.D. behind my name should give some indication of my aptitude - that and getting no less than a 97% in all the fucking easy as hell education classes, and scoring a perfect score on both the Bio and Chem Praxis II's (which are a joke, btw). So in the eyes of the state, a wet-behind-the-ears B.A. in Biology Education is more qualified to teach kids Biology than I am because he or she had a 3 month student-teaching internship.

The whole system is fucked, and it mainly because of fuckwit people who love to rally against teachers...

I just don't get why everyone hounds on the teachers in this country. Is it because their salaries are public by law? I don't get it. The 250K a year not being rich lady is hilarious by the way. It just shows how out of touch with reality the Fox News anchors really are. Really? 250k a year is considered borderline poverty? Well shit, I guess my 90k a year, meager salary should just barely afford a shack in a slum.

as a scientist and hardline supporter of getting an education, I die a little every time someone says teachers make too much money. my mother is a kindergarten teacher with a fucking masters in special education focusing on identifying and helping those students asap. she is a real smart lady that works her fucking ass off, she did not suckle of the tit of society. she is trying to make those kids better people. I would gladly pay more taxes if it meant good people who give a shit about instilling the want to learn anything and everything into our children got those jobs. my mom makes just over 50 grand after almost 2 decades of school and 30 years of teaching in the same school.

This is the problem I have. I have to motivate students to get excited about careers in science. How can I do that when teachers and post-doc scientists get paid shit?

I read that same thing recently about how we're basically babysitters. How much do you want to bet that the people who complain about that are the ones who do absolutely nothing to mold their children into productive members of society who probably won't make a living robbing liquor stores? If people complain that I'm a babysitter, it's because they're not holding up their end at home, goddamnit. So much of my time gets wasted dealing with the kids who are raised to answer to NO adult except their parents and that they don't have to do anything they don't want to. I'd LOVE to not have to "babysit" the kids you're ruining.
