Facebook Going Too Far For Gay Rights or Just Enough?

Really? Maybe I'm missing something here, but wasn't "married" sufficient? Whether a city/state recognized it as a marriage, if you had a civil union/partnership, most of the gay couples I know still say "husband" or "wife" about their SO. Not "Civil Partner".

I mean, I know some activists feel it isn't enough, my own sister shrugged her shoulders and said that some people "need" that extra justification. Were these two new status needed or is it a bit overboard?

I have a friend who is in a polyamorous relationship who has been wanting such changes for awhile.

Not everyone defines a relationship as "married". Some are more than just "in a relationship," though, too.

I had already throught it was silly to have "It's Complicated" as a choice.

Then again, that's just a personal opinion and I can't speak for other's feelings on the subject.

It just seems so cut and dry for me:

Single = Single
In a relationship = With someone, either just recently or for a few years but not really joined in any recognized way
Married = With someone, recognized in some manner as a permanent and solidified relationship.

That's really all I can think of as required.

I think it's overly complicated, but it costs them practically nothing to implement, and anyone who doesn't want to use it will never have to choose otherwise.

So if FB wants to take a stand, let 'em.

how can they have a proper facebook status? Mixed messages people.

your definition of 'married' doesn't equal the current raging debate on marriages and civil unions. Marriages are between a man and a woman... right? right?
In the end I think most gay partners just use husband/wife after a while and if the facebook relationship status is that important... *le sigh*.

Also is divorced an available status? Separated?
Also Also 'It's complicated' as a status is the dumbest thing I've ever heard of.

Having more options is not a bad thing. That way people can put what they want regardless of how other people feel about it

I think it's just providing more options to express yourself and your lifestyle... I don't see it as going too far, I don't see it as "necessary", it's just a wider range of options.

I mean no offense by this, but it seems that marriage was only between a man and a woman until a mere 6 years ago in Canada, too (according to Wikipedia).

none taken. It will be six years sometime this year I believe.
It was a tongue in cheek look at the use of the word marriage in Jiarn's context versus America as a whole and it's usage on an internet posting site.
I'm not sure what six years ago has to do with it though. Is it too soon for gay couples to use the term married?
Facebook has only been worldwide for five years.

No it wasn't that, it was just more to point out that the US isn't standing out there like a sore thumb.

I've known plenty of "it's complicated"s being fuckbuddies, or exes who are working things out, or people who just got together but don't consider it a relationship yet, or 10-15 other reasons....

Friends made an fb page for their dog, seemed like "It's complicated" was the perfect relationship status for a pup whose profile includes liking long walks and eating his own poop then humping everything possible. Guess his complicated relationship is really mostly getting past the fence and out to have a relationship. So I can see places where that one certainly fits!

I don't mind when people go from it's complicated to relationship but the other way irks me. If you are not in a relationship anymore just fucking go to single. You filthy filthy attention whore!

Not that I have anyone specific in mind >.>
