New Squaresoft titles on PSN make me gush (and you can too!)

I was browsing the Playstation store today, finding some free DLC, and stumbled onto the new releases. Some non-Final Fantasy classics from Squaresoft came to my attention and excitement.

Legend of Mana: A lot of people didn't care for this, and I suppose I wouldn't if I played Secret of Mana, but for those who enjoyed it or want to check it out, there it is.

Vagrant Story: I never played this, but I heard a lot of great things. It's also there now.

Parasite Eve: Fuck yes. I'm sure they only put this on there because The 3rd Birthday is coming soon, but this is a GREAT game.

Xenogears: The quality arguments of this game are pointless because HOLY SHIT it's available, and not for $80-$100 like on Ebay. I never expected to see this on the PSN outside Japan. It's not everyone's cup of tea and it's loooong, but the story is great (if not perfectly translated) and the battle system is fun. Anyone who liked the Xenosaga games but never played this should absolutely play this to see where things went after Episode III, skipping ten to twenty thousand years...

I thought PE2 was a good game that was marred only by it's RE style controls, and it's basically X-Files type plot. PE was more innovative, though.

I never played it (we have it around here somewhere) but that comment makes it sound like "aside from its bad controls and story, it was a good game".

The story wasn't bad, but it was kind of predictable and had the same wacky conspiracy mumbo-jumbo as your average X-Files episode. The controls weren't bad, but because your character moved like a tank, it was easy to get tagged by small, nimble enemies (which thankfully are few) or fast ones (also rare). If it had controlled more like RE4 than RE2, it would have been incredible.

Basically, it was like playing RE2 with RPG elements overtaking the Survival Horror elements.

Legend of Mana is... odd, considering the series. It has a whole lot of customization and a deep crafting system... but you'll never have to seriously use it to finish the game. For some reason, they decided to put this in the Sword of Mana remake.

Vagrant Story: Again, deep combat mechanics and an even deeper crafting system. Only you actually NEED to figure out the crafting system in this one, especially if you want to do the bonus dungeon. It also has a top notch plot, with well defined characters and an interesting overall message. I'm glad it's officially considered part of the Ivalice Alliance, but I hope we get an official sequel someday. Probably my #1 PSX game of all time.

Parasite Eve 2: This is a game you'll probably want to play at least three or four times. Simple plot, but a well hidden alternate ending (that you'll only be able to access if you look at a window multiple times on a certain night or read a guide) and lots of hidden items to get, not to mention 4 bonus modes after you beat it.
