Khalid Sheikh Mohammed to be tried by military commission instead of civilian trial

Goddamn it.

(more of a rant than anything else)

Aside from my own sociopolitical views on justice, and my general desire for the US to stop being afraid of putting our own justice system to the test and to stop letting terrorism be an excuse for creating exceptions to our own system, I really, really, really wanted this fucking murderer tried in 60 Center Street, a few blocks away from, and in the figurative (at least for now) shadow of, the new World Trade Center. I really, really wanted his nose rubbed in the fact that we will always rebuild, and he and his monstrous confederates will never win.

I don't know who to blame; Obama and Holder for backing down, Schumer and Bloomberg (and all the NY political guppies around them) for freaking out, the entire Congress for passing legislation to block it, or John Yoo and the Bush-administration for enabling it in the first place.

Fuck all of them.

He sang like a bird under water boarding, and we caught a lot of terrorist from that information... so yeah the military will likely find him guilty.

So you've already declared him guilty?
I *think* he's guilty, but you'll notice I said that I want him tried in a civilian court.

If I had any doubt, I'd be in favor of military commissions, so I could be sure that he'd be found guilty no matter what.

Jon Stewart once pointed out that if he was found innocent, they would just turn him loose on the streets of New York... Which really, would work itself out, no?

Advocating for him to be beaten to death by a blood hungry mob is fucking disgusting.
I'm not advocating it, I'm just saying that it's not a wrong-headed observation: it would probably happen. Eternally diplomatic, I'd never advocate violence against an unarmed, non-threatening person, even as temptingly cathartic as the idea might seem... I was just acknowledging that not everyone feels that way, they (understandably, I could even say) have visceral, emotional and furious reactions to the idea of meeting that man.
