Potato Sack and Portal 2

So apparently, in a new way to try to make money (or just get more people to try their games since this stuff is on mega sale on Steam), There is a "reboot Glados" project on aperturescience.com wherein if enough people play these indie games then Portal 2 will be released early. I wonder if it will actually happen...

Man, this whole ARG was leading up to Portal 2? I was hoping it was an Episode 3 thing. Not like Portal 2 needed the help and extra publicity.

For over 3 and a half years.

I don't think they've been working on it much, considering the numerous unnecessary TF2 updates, the L4D games, and Portal 2.

I'm guessing they know what they want to do with it, story and tech wise, and are waiting for the time to be right to put in the amount of effort necessary for both of those.

After one game completed they reduced the time by about 50 minutes. There are 13 games, so if each are "worth" 50 minutes, then it might be released as early as 12 to 1am on the 19th - technically still a 19th released (so not a day early) but many hours prior to the intended release (which appears to be right around 10am EDT, 7am PDT).

I think it's great that a large company like that is boosting sales for indie games. It's really win/win.

A website that keeps track of the pace the bar is filling. I may be keeping Cogs running on my PC 24/7 to help out. >.>

At primetime last night it was on pace to finish by 4am Monday, it had obviously slowed down since people were sleeping but hopefully it will pick up again.

As if a race against time to unlock Portal 2 early wasn’t enough, Valve have been dropping cryptic hints that there’s more to come from the ARG. A decrypted morse code message hidden in the latest Steamcast read “it’s not over the others have been compromised.” Later, a message from the mysterious “Doug” alludes to an Aperture Science Icebreaker Ship. The only one of those we know about is the Borealis. The Borealis was last seen seen at the end of Half Life 2: Episode 2. This is getting very exciting indeed.

The current countdown clock says just under 11 hours until the projected launch. However, the auxiliary power potato meter is rapidly counting down as well. That number of potatoes will reach zero in just under 9 hours (by my calculations, I timed 1,000 potatoes about every 86 seconds.)

Every time I do the calculations it suggests that it's going to come out at midnight EDT. Both the potato timer and the games appear to coincide about that time.

It's 12:32 and the calculations are done. Anybody have it to see if it's out?

Personally, I'm betting Steam crashes like it did when they released L4D2... and L4D1... and the Orange Box... have they EVER had a launch that didn't cripple Steam?

It's out! I want to play, but I've got some things I need to get done first. I'm promising myself I'll be all ready to go to bed before I sit down to play, so I won't be up too late afterwards.

Well at least get it started through its file decryption. It seems to be taking a while. I might just go to bed and come back fresh in the morning.

It also looks like everyone who gathered all 32 potatoes in the games was given a copy of the complete Valve Collection over Steam. Very nice.

I hate GlaDOS. I hate her. I hate her. I hate her. I hate that damn computer. I thought I was over it, but I hate her. Really.

H a t e h e r.

Hate her.

On another note, this game is gorgeous. They've put a lot of work into it, but it's still got bugs. I'll spoiler this just in case. It's a picture of an early test chamber. I don't think it spoils anything (there's a gun in the game that shoots portals!). I managed to get a cube where it wasn't supposed to be. Strange clipping put it on the wrong side of some glass.

Played through 3 levels of the co-op campaign, was fun as hell. :D My husband and I never killed each other once though, mostly because we knew if someone started it, it would be all we managed to do for the rest of the night lol.

Really looking forward to getting this one, but having just pre-ordered LA Noire I think I'll wait for the price to come down a bit.

Episode 2 took what, 5+ years to come out? I'm guessing Episode 3 will be around that time frame.

The sheer amount of times you have to trust your partner to not kill you and laugh in co-op is both amazing and scary. Not something to be played with the "asshole" friend, unless it's for revenge. ;)

Ah, I can't wait to play it with a friend of mine. It will be a true asshole-fest.

Finished my first play through a little while ago. Had a blast as I did with the first. Tried to do some of the Co-op with a random and it went well at first and then he just left mid game. Didn't get very far into it. Would love to go through it with someone willing to stick it out.

Just finished the campaign. Fucking incredible. I wanna start again immediately, but I've got an exam tomorrow.

So great.

2007 - 2004 = ?

Hint, it's not 5. And it had Ep.1 in between...

Seriously Valve, you can do L4D2 in a year but no Ep.3 yet... at least announce that you scrapped it for HL3 (no need to mention HL3 though, we'll figure it out ourselves aka already did) already...
