And PSN has gone down again.

"PSN Sign-in is offline due to new security hole that can reset passwords using just the date of birth and email address — information that was stolen in the first attack."

EDIT: Apparently it's just the web interface, consoles can still get online.

wait what?!?! You know, you would think these "security firms" would know how to actually make secure system.

As I said in the other thread, it's like watching the Three Stooges trying to be a network security firm.

Hey, they gave us two free games, a month of Plus, and as-yet-undisclosed movie rentals last time. Maybe this time, they'll do even better.

Heh. that is weird. So SOe are bringing down the account system and update BUT you can still access the forum but can't do anything about it. For a min, I panicked cause I thought I got hacked with the new password (a really strong and new password I never use before) but then I read the SOE announcement.

I dunno, the more we get into this problem the more I just think, this is the future. The more we invest ourselves digitally the more targets for people with no regard for the law or personal privacy we create. I think Sony made some missteps here but in the end this could have happened to almost anyone from what I've read so far.

That is true. We already heard about security firm being hacked, CC company, banks, government, corporations and even facilities (nuclear powerplants)

That doesn't absolve companies who get hacked from any negligence but the reality is this is always going to happen, even when you have great security.

Problem is that most of these doesn't have great security (IMO) The best they could do is encrypt the data when stored so that way when people hack them, they just get a bunch of encrypted data unlike the last haul from SOE. Now the hacker can update their rainbow table with the new sets of hash passwords.

I think the thing that bothered a lot of people so much wasn't the hacking, but that Sony had been really negligent in updating server software.

still think it was an inside job, but part of standard procedure was changing main password (or people don't have master password) to the server. There was a major layoff so I don't know which department was laid off.

But you are right, the IT should keep the server up to date and monitor traffic.

Like I said, they aren't innocent in this. They also should have given out more info sooner.

I think a lot of company gotta REALLY look into security and safe guard all these info they are hoarding. I know it is a marketing bonanza but if they don't protect it, it is more likely to bite them in the wallet if they are not careful.

As far as future goes, I'm looking at PSN and questioning how much I actually want to be involved with it. Say I want some DLC or a PS1 game. Can I trust them again? I don't know.

Sucks for the customers, but I have no sympathy for Sony. Remember when they wanted to rootkit everyone and thought no one would notice?

Since my copy of LBP disappeared suddenly like a week after I bought it, that will be one and I think some Wipeout for old times sake. Already have Infamous and the other two are just cruddy little downloadable games anyway. Super Stardust is hardly a good gift game.

So I'm stuck with the 2 small games.

I thought about going to gamestop and selling LBP and Infamous but I figure I'll get, what? Maybe 5 bucks each from Gamestop?

Dead Nation and Wipeout for me. Really happy about the former, though. :D

Also, it's possible there will be other stuff we'll be getting along the way, too.
