[Webcomic] PVP Discussion

Except it's not empty, no reason complaints, it's straight up problems that are being pointed out. Alot of the people in this thread that are calling him out on how bad it's been are some of his biggest supporters in the past so where you get the "bitter ex's" from is beyond me.

Oh and soars out of the park? Someone's sounding like the new girlfriend if anything. Over exaggerating an "ok" thing just because it's his stance to defend.

Man, fuck that noise. If Scott puts out good work, he'll get praise. If Scott puts out bad work, he'll get scorn. Just because he's on a demanding schedule (just like every other professional cartoonist) isn't an excuse. Just because he wrote something funny 5 years ago doesn't mean his work now should be immune from criticism.

If Scott starts putting out great work and fans start slobbering him with praise, are you gonna call for people to stop because it's getting to be a bit much? No, that would be stupid, because if he's putting out great work, he deserves all the praise he gets. So why would you expect fans to not talk shit during the down times when he's putting out garbage? It's not like he's giving us a lot to work with here.

Having an off day is forgivable. But taking a gag that doesn't work, and pile-driving it repeatedly into the audience's faces, is just awful, and that's what "Scratch of Thrones" was. He's proud of the Brent "drowning himself with coffee" bit? WHY? He finds criticism of it "baffling"? And the sheer by-god arrogance of *telling* people "by the way, those comics were really funny" when they simply weren't... Then getting really defensive about it, and changing his story about what he meant, from "fuck you, it's funny" to "It was self-deprecating hyperbole" - which means what exactly?

The other thing is, the only references I've seen to the story arc weren't exactly praise, but he acts fucking shocked that people weren't digging it. I can't believe all week that no one at the office said, "Dude, it's not working, what about this instead..."

I haven't checked the comic for a long time and seeing the fury in this thread the last day or so got me intrigued. I just read the last few weeks worth and maaaan..... does he check if it is funny with ANYONE? ANYYYYONE before it is done?

I'd rather staple my dick to a burning farm than having to endure what I just read and... oh GOD LOLbat.

I did read a few impressive ones and it was... once again... about gaming... what the comic was all about originally.

Once again I'll hiberate away from whatever the fuck I just had the misfortune of reading. Fuck you all too for doing this to me. :)

I dunno. I mean, I get the frustration when people read a PVP arc that blows. For me, at least, PVP was one of the first webcomics I ever read (along with the likes of Megatokyo, PA, Melonpool, Nodwick, etc.), and as such, it's kind of sad that I don't read/enjoy it quite as much these days, considering how much I used to. Hell, I still quote some of the old strips of which Kurtz is now so 'embarrassed.' Considering his humor in the past, and his drawing talent in the present, there's obvious potential on pvponline.com.

But I really don't get having it out on Twitter. As much as I disliked this latest batch of strips, the Kurtz does what the Kurtz does. It's rather like trying to halt the seasons.

We just want him to understand that his comics were bad and that he should feel bad for making them.

The GoT arc anyway

Sometimes that's true here. However, many times, I'll find that some people post snotty, obnoxious comments no matter what. Maybe they're sincere, but it often doesn't ring true. There's a fair amount of people here who don't want to give the man any credit at all. Even some of the sincere comments probably come off shitty because there's still bitterness present... and if it's not bitterness, it's arrogance. Sometimes people act like they've cracked the formula for funny and can logically talk someone out of being amused by something. Why not shrug and move on? Why not suggest something better (which some people do). Why not create something better and share it? I don't know... I guess I've just never seen the purpose of this debate. Carry on, I s'pose. There are plenty of other threads that are good.

So you're asking fans to stop being fans? I mean, this is what fans do. They're passionate about what they like, and that passion can manifest itself both positively and negatively. I mean, I get suggesting people shrug and move on when you have nothing positive to be say, but discussion is the lifeblood of any forum. Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad. Although, I will admit that any criticisms that seem more a function of perceived bitterness or arrogance, I tend to dismiss after considering them, so my overall view of the thread is probably less steeped in the kind of comments you're talking about.
-edit-
Well, assuming I'm not one of those bitter, obnoxious fans :p

You guys can't tell me you weren't impressed by today's PvP! It's fricking hi-LAR-ious! For realz! This is not sarcasm.

And thus does Dave of the Ancient Penis speak the truth of Steve Kuntz. Kuntz greatest talent lies not in art or writing but in getting other artists to supply him with fantastic guest strips.

You scoff, but this is Bill fuckin' AMEND!! Dude!
I'm not scoffing at the truth of your statement. I agree entirely with the notion that the guest strip is fantastic and funny.

I'm just mocking you. Mostly because it's Wednesday.

In all seriousness, I don't think there has been a funny PvP strip in years that was not a guest strip. The top 10 funny strips for the last year would most likely be all guest strips.

Sir, we must agree to disagree. Yes, I agree his earlier stuff was funnier than they are today. But there have still been some great strips in the last few years.

I thought it felt more like what former fans do when their feelings are still hurt over something that's very, very over. I'm aware that some people here give sincere feedback and truly do give credit where credit is due. I haven't seen a lot of your posts, so I wasn't talking about you. It was just a comment about the general vibe I feel when people start complaining about PVP.

Do you really think people are still pissed about that? I'm asking honestly because I missed The Incident and by the time I got on board here things seemed pretty chill (well, as far as i can recall). I remember being less hurt and more "Dude, wtf happened?"

If they're not still hurt directly by it, there are certainly a number of people on their forums who have some kind of personal vendetta with Kurtz or would like to see him taken down a peg.

Yep, that's what I see... again, not in everyone, but in some.

The only person who is still in a mood about the past is DarkAudit (sorry buddy, it's true).

Not big on the comic, but liked the guest strip.

I dunno, there's a long connection between this place, many of the folks here and PVP. The forum was originally built around that comic. It's kind of normal that the discussion about it will be passionate whether it be positive or negative. I would agree though, that sometimes, peoples "critiques" of PVP seem to be more... due to a dislike of Scott than the strip.
But in the end I wouldn't let that stop us from discussing the good and the bad of the strip. Its still one of the 4 strips I check daily although it's not at as high on my list as it was a few years back when it was a wee more game/geek themed.

I like Scott as a person, not as a businessman or a professional. He really seems like he'd be a fun guy to hang out with, but he's admitted he's poor at taking criticism. The GoT arc sucked--I don't get the references, and everyone who did said it wasn't funny anyway.

As posted, that Magic the Gathering strip was the first in a while that had me laughing aloud.
