Agh. On this train, one of my roommates during my course here in Montreal has revealed herself to be a rather racist individual. One day she comes home talking about the the "funny jews" (I came to understand she mean, and forgive if I'm misusing the term, Hasidic Jews) who were walking around the neighbourhood and how they dress funny and have stupid hair. She went on and on about "the jews" so I just told her I wasn't interested and left. I literally came home to her watching YouTube videos of these guys making fun of black people.
Yesterday she starts telling me how she found out one of the guys in the program is a Mennonite. He shouldn't be allowed here, she says, because they're not supposed to use planes. She went on about how the Mennonites in her hometown JUDGE her and "you can tell by they way they look at you".
Fuck me. I finally had enough, particularly because she was attacking this guy (when he wasn't even around, because she is spineless) who has been nothing but civil and nice to everyone, so I tried to talk her down and explain she had no reason to believe AT LEAST that this one guy was bad, but no. All Mennonites everywhere are bad according to her, and they should not be allowed to go to Wal-Mart (which is where they judge her).
Turns out it's futile to have that argument. Argh.
