[Webcomic] PVP Discussion

Joe Johnson

I think it would have been better if he HADN'T told us. Now I'm going to frame this entire arc in my head as an advertisement, and I fear it will end up resembling one of those old Marvel/Hostess ads they used to have in the back of comic books.

Hey for everyone who thinks his strip should be about gaming more often, this will basically force him into that. His last MTG strips were pretty good if I recall correctly.

You know, thats actually not a terrible direction for him to take advertising/strip merging. Those old comic/hostess comics are great and one could easily poke fun at/parody them.

SCOTT, IF YOU ARE READING THIS, STEAL THIS IDEA IMMEDIATELY!

From his blog post: "And we’re breaking ground with online advertising too, which excites the hell out of me."

Am I reading this wrong or is the Tastemaker trying to strike again?

I missed that. How is this breaking new ground? He's integrating products into his strip, thats about as much breaking new ground as slicing a loaf of bread is.

This isn't even a case of "what's old is new again". Kurtz somehow thinks he's on the leading edge of this re-emerging trend, when he's really leagues behind. "Eureka" had a season sponsored by Degree deodorant three years ago and worked it into the plotline. Not a webcomic, granted, but a lot of other shows have since followed suit.

Kurtz, product placement in media isn't new, and even in the scope of it's recent revival, you're not setting the trend.

Hell, last week's episode of The Glades had a brief and pointless discussion about the Kia Optima that one character was driving, with a minor character commenting on it's nifty features, almost mirroring a nearly identical conversation had between two characters last summer on Royal Pains, though it was a different brand.

I think he knows perfectly well that it exists in movies and tv shows. I mean, he talks extensively about that. If there HASN'T been product placement in webcomics, then yes, I think he's legitimately breaking some new ground.

I don't expect this to make the strip worse, and as noted earlier, it'll force it to actually be about GAMING, which is probably a plus.

I think that the movie Doomsday must have had some substantial funding from Bentley Motors considering that an important part of the movie involves finding Bentley Continental GT in storage. Not only does it appear to have rolled freshly off the lot, but despite having been in storage for years the car starts and drives without ANY problems.

They engage in a full on chase with cars ramming into each other and exploding around it and yet the Bentley takes hardly any damage at all.

It's clearly a supercar

I really, really, REALLY hate the new Francis. This isn't meant to be a criticism of teh Kurtz's writing style or character development, but I just don't like Francis as an adult. It was fine when he was a selfish, thoughtless douchebag because that's how you expect a teenager to act. But now he's still a selfish, thoughtless douchebag and a fully grown adult. He doesn't have many redeeming features.

I was doubtful about the advertising thing until he mentioned that he wasn't in charge of it, but letting the two pros at the PA office who handle that sort of thing to handle it.

That's exactly what he should be doing, and I applaud him for finally putting delegation into practice beyond asking his wife/brother/dog/Kris/etc to do something for him as a favor.

It is worth noting that so far the commitment Scott is making to the the WotC strips have made them a LOT funnier. It's his roots, yo!
