The Virginia Tech campus is on lockdown again. There have been reports of a gunman but as far as I can tell nothing has been confirmed.

DEVELOPING: A gunman has been reported near a Virginia Tech dining hall, officials said Thursday.
The university issued an alert on its website at 9:37 a.m. Thursday telling students and employees to stay inside and secure doors.
The alert said the gunman was reported near Dietrick Hall, a three-story dining facility. The dining hall is steps away from the dorm where the first shootings took place in 2007, when a student gunman killed 32 people and then himself.
The school said on its website that three juveniles attending a camp at the school reported seeing a man holding what may have been a handgun. They said it was covered by a cloth or covering of some sort, and that the man was walking in the direction of the volleyball courts.
Officials said they are looking for a white man with light brown hair who is 6 feet tall. Officials say the person is wearing a blue and white striped shirt, gray shorts and brown sandals. He was described as clean shaven, according to the university's website.
Police from Virginia Tech, Blacksburg and Christiansburg are searching for the man, as well as Montgomery County sheriff's deputies.

Another article from CNN: [Update 10:31 a.m.] Virginia Tech is in lockdown as authorities look for a man three youths said may have had a weapon, possibly a handgun.
The white male was described as having light brown hair and being 6 feet tall and was walking in the direction of a volleyball court. The man was wearing a blue and white striped shirt, gray shorts and brown sandals. He had no glasses or facial hair, according to the report.

[Original post, 10:18 a.m.] Virginia Tech, the site of a 2007 massacre, has issued an alert saying someone is possibly carrying a weapon on campus.
Regular classes aren't in session at the moment, but there is summer school. The university in Blacksburg, Virginia, is asking people on campus to stay inside and secure doors. The person was spotted near Dietrick Dining Hall.
In April 2007, Cho Seung-Hui, 23, shot dead 32 people on campus before killing himself.

Hopefully it's a fluke and some idiot is about to get jumped by cops for holding dead and frozen parakeet under a blanket.

I hope so, too. But I'd love to see the look on the guy's face if it's nothing and they find him.

I can see how they could be a tad skittish on that campus, though.

Kids as eyewitnesses + very vague description + site of previous massacre = probably a hoax. But I agree, better safe than sorry.

I remember back around 93-95 at our campus (Richland Community College) kids usually play a lot of pranks on bomb threats. As a pre-caution, we always evacuate, cause you know if there was one and it went off, it would be a bigger mess to deal with (literally and pun intended)

A threat to everyone there. Five hours of a lockdown due to reported presence of gun man in Virginia Tech campus. Police surveyed many individuals. However, after five hours of a lock down, nobody matching the first description was found. Related article I read:Virginia Tech campus returns to normal operations . Good indication of awareness in safety and security issues.

Hey thanks for the update! I'm glad everything turned out okay and that their procedures worked as intended.

I am glad it was a false alarm. These things always scare me since I work at a community college. We just had a drill for lockdown for about 30 minutes (the actual lockdown) we were crammed into rooms with no windows and lockable door (required) it was not comfortable. I can imagine a 5 hour lockdown would be worst, but it is better than being dead.

Something like that happened at a University I know. I knew several cops, armed to the teeth that were headed there at a high rate of speed to help deal with the gunmen sightings.

Then the campus police announced that they caught the perps... they were having Nerf Gun Fights on campus.

They are very lucky that those four guys with assault rifles did not get there first.
