WoW: Transmogrification

I know many here don't even play WoW anymore, but I figured this was neat enough news that I should post for the few that do. Blizzard just announced they are finally adding the ability to customize the look of your gear through a process called transmogrification. Basically you can make your latest, greatest gear look like any other item you have collected of your armor/weapon type. Got a full set of Judgement in the bank with a Hand of Ragnaros? Turn your T12 armor to look like it and find a nice epic mace to convert.

All I can say, is I am glad I kept most of the sets that are now impossible to get.

heh so instead of having a costume slot (would have been easier IMO) they decide to have a gold sink to "move" stats from one item to another.

Except for the Hand of Ragnaros part.

Heh, pvpers wearing the highest appropriate tier disguising themselves in the lowest level appropriate gear should be able to enjoy the shit out of that.

I seriously need to go through my bank and start sending in tickets to get back stuff I cleared out. T5/6 GOOOOOOOOOOO

Dang, I picked up nearly a complete set of Gianstalker's on my hunter the other day, I put it on and threw it out. But I'll buy the Grand Marshall's set, and look good in PvP.

I've not played in a month though.

LOTRO does it better... and they've been doing it better for AT LEAST 3 years. What an ass backwards thing for Blizzard to do.

Meh, most of us know others have done it better. Character customization has never been the strong suit of WoW. Most of the community is just happy we are getting anything at this point, and the system they are using will work fine for that. At least now I will have a place I can store all that gear I have that carries a sentimental value rather then overwhelming my character bank.

So players of the largest and wealthiest Mmo are "Just happy to get anything" at this point? Has it really gone that far since I stopped playing post-cata?

This is a good step, and if I were still playing I'd be happy to have it available, but it's far from enough to draw me back to it. Particularly given their recent announcement/discussion about the role of threat in the game. Working to hold threat in TBC was the most fun I've had raiding in any game, I think, and for them to just shrug and decide to get rid of the whole system is...disappointing, let's say.

I know. Other MMO have a costume slot where you can put anything (that you can wear) and it will display that instead, but you are right. It is a good gold sink for those who want to keep changing their look.

Honestly, I dislike threat as a system entirely. In City of Heroes it was never a problem (mainly because if you didn't have 8+ guys pounding on you, you were doing something wrong), though it was a bit harder in LotRO as a Guardian, but not nearly as hard as it was in WoW.

I should specify that I'm looking at this from the perspective of a progression raider, but I've never had a better experience in an MMO than tanking Burning Crusade bosses while the dps went balls to the wall, and managing to hold threat. It was hard, there were a lot of people who failed at it, and it's an amazing feeling to have those dps turn around and refuse to run with other tanks because they have to hold back. It's an element of skill and group interaction that's been completely removed from the game and replaced with...nothing.

Threat wasn't really a huge problem assuming you were raiding with equally geared people, but it was really fucking annoying if you were a new tank doing heroics for gear and everyone outgeared the shit out of you. Spamming taunt and still not being able to hold threat = not fun. And DPS stopped looking at Omen/threat meters right around the end of BC too. :p

See, this is never a problem in CoH. There is no gear (or at least what passes for gear really doesn't make a difference unless you spend billions of Influence/Infamy to get specific recipes) so it all comes down to power choices... and EVERYTHING Brutes and Tankers do increases threat far faster than a Blaster, Corrupter, Scrapper, Stalker, or Mastermind could ever generate it. Holding threat is not the problem... staying alive is. And that's how it should be!

It's not even really that, I think most of us were simply not ever expecting to have this customization option open to us at all, so now that we will have an option, we are happy about it. Why complain that you don't have the stars when you are happy with the sky? Don't get me wrong, Cataclysm as a whole has a lot of problems, and the lowering user count is proof of that. However, I have some hopes for MoP, even if they are much more guarded hopes. We will see how it goes.

Until then, I am happy to just run battlegrounds with my wife and play other games like Champions Online or Age of Empires Online when I am not feeling the WoW itch.

I may actually come back for 4.3. I think WoW is pretty much the best MMO I could be sinking time into right now without spending all my time (if I wanted that, I would be playing EvE).

Hoping SWTOR or the Secret World will be able to do something well enough to switch from WoW without requiring every hour.

What worries me about TSW is that it's Funcom, and their last MMO was Age of Conan. It's been a long time since Anarchy Online.
Funcom is producing, but someone else is developing I think. Really, the secret world seems to have a lot of content and they are really pushing the freedom of choice aspect in their interviews. For AoC, they kinda played up the "mature" angle and didn't talk much about the content.

No, Funcom is definitely developing, it's just across multiple studios (which isn't really a great sign). While it's great that this is Ragnar Tornquist's baby, he still needs good people to make the game...

Well, there goes all my excitement for the new Void Storage.

Void Storage

1000g to unlock it on the character.
100g PER ITEM to put something inside, with 80 slots you can fill. (8000g to max it out)
No word if taking out an item and putting it back in would cost another 100g

Come on, Blizzard. Get rid of the stupid deposit fee. I don't mind spending money to unlock the feature, but adding a fee per item to put inside is just bullshit. No one is going to use it for the purpose you designed it with that type of crap.

I know I'm echoing millions of people, but it sure would be nice at this point to see the next fantasy mmo offering from Blizzard. Something preferably where the characters aren't so homogenized that your class basically just determines the color of the pretty lights on the screen.

from what I read on the link, I think it is EACH time you take item in and out :(

This is my biggest complaint. The classes used to all feel unique, but then everyone bitched about not having the toys of other classes, and after a time they just all became the same.

Nice, they've announced that "silly" items aren't going to be transmogrifiable. No fish weapons, no evening gowns, no frying pans etc.

Righteous, so no Legendaries and no fun items. I know an old guildie that would definitely turn his Thunderfury into the bone or something just to see people cry.

So Transmogranificranoation fucking sucks.

I think they are limiting what you can Trans in order to prevent market inflation. That being said, even LOTRO wouldn't let you put a weapon in a cosmetic slot.

No, they're not. All items with "stats" so far are being allowed, so any BoE's are still going to sky rocket in price. The only items they're preventing are all the "silly" items that are of white value or legendaries.

They said they have not decided on all the items. There are actually a few "bones" that have stats on them and are low level weapons. They can likely still be transmogrified (though still not on a legendary).

The ones they said they are trying to prevent are mostly the items that are not really weapons, but go in the weapon slots, like the equip-able fish.

We will have to see in the end how far they take it, I would have loved to make another Worgen caster, getting the top hat, and transmoging, but I may not be able to do it, which sucks.

I am writing up a suggestion for the suggestion forum to make all those armor merchants useful by stocking them with much more white gear and allowing those items to be transmogrified. The weapon and armor merchants in the game have been pretty much worthless since they came out, as anything other then sell/repair bots, and I think the transmogrification system has a chance to actually make them useful.

Really, only gear with special "hard to get" items should be unique, the greens and blues you get from quests? Not so much. Just allow us to buy them for some gold on the merchants.
